Stargate SG-1, obviously based on the hit film Stargate, now enters into its third season on DVD. This show has become somewhat of a cult favorite in Sci-Fi circles. The series, though somewhat different then the film, contains a number of good storylines, and is quite entertaining. As is the case with the previous two season, season three follows the SG-1 team through obscure galaxies battling intergalactic villains.
Audio
Containing a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track, this show sounds …ery good on DVD. The dialog is clear, and is nicely incorporated in to a strong front channel soundtrack. The surround channels are effectively used at appropriate times, helping to engulf the listener with a full soundstage.
Video
The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer included on each episode is a mixed bag. The CG special effects look great. The colors are brilliant, and these effects are clear from most debris. The remainder of the transfer (non-CG) is somewhat grainy, and although the colors are good, the blacks are far to overpowering… making it very hard to make out detail in dark sequences. These episodes look much better then they would on TV, but are not amazing.
Special Features
In terms of special features, all you will find on this set are three extras, which are all pieces of the “Secret Files of the SGC”.
- On disc one, there is a featurette on Colonel Jack O’Neill. This 13 minute feature discusses Richard Dean Anderson’s role in the show, and the multiple hats he wears in the production of the show. This is nothing great… just a mix of interviews and clips from the show.
- On disc three, there is The Stargate Universe featurette. This 16 minute feature explores, through interviews and clips, the storylines covered, the scripts, and the interesting nuances of SG1. This is a good watch… but nothing that will blow you away.
- Lastly, on disc four, is a Personnel Files featurette. This 16 minute feature includes character studies of a few members of the cast, and also has the cast & crew recalling their favorite episodes. Again, nothing mind blowing here.
Final Thoughts
Most sci-fi fans will enjoy this set. The special effects are good, the sound is much better the broadcast television, and there are a few worthy extras. The video has a few flaws, but at least it is presented in widescreen. All-in-all, this is a pretty good set.
