Jack the Dog tells the story of Jack, a promiscuous, narcissistic, self centered man whose humanity is brought out through a relationship with a son whom he hardly knows.

The opening of the movie depicts Jack as a womanizing photographer whose conquests satisfy his more primitive needs but leave him emotionally hungry. He decides to give up that life and try to pursue happiness. He gets married and has a son but after a few years he falls back into old patterns and continues with his womanizing ways. His …ife becomes aware of his infidelity and seeks a divorce.

During this process, Jack’s humanity begins to surface as he learns what will truly make him happy – a meaningful relationship with his son. He pursues custody of his son because his ex-wife wants to hook up with a sleazy Frenchman whom Jack does not believe will be a good role model for his son.

This story has been told many times before but what makes this movie stand out is the heartfelt performance of Nestor Campbell as Jack. He displays such a wide range of emotions in a very believable performance.

Video

The movie is presented in Full Screen 1.33:1. The transfer was well done. The colors are bright and the image is sharp. There was no noticeable pixilation or grain in the picture. The skin tones are well represented and there is no bleeding of the image during bright scenes. The black level is well set.

Audio

The Dolby Digital 2.0 track delivers on what it is supposed to deliver – clear crisp dialogue. The dynamic range is good enough for what it is supposed to deliver. The music, which ranges from classical to pop, is decent but there is a lack of any bass effects. Although we are all used to Dolby 5.1 these days for a film such as this there is no need for it -there are no instances in the movie where your attention is being drawn to the right or left - it all takes place centre screen.

Special Features

The only extra is a trailer for the movie. Otherwise nothing else.

Final Thoughts

This is definitely worth a rent to see some good acting and some genuinely funny moments.
