In this continuing series of New Release Tuesday blogs, I will be outlining the notable titles are being released today. The standard format is 5/5/5 – focusing on our picks for the top 5 film releases, top 5 TV releases, and top 5 High Definition release for the week. We have a busy week in the world of DVD, but a slow week in the HD realm… so this weeks format will be 5/5/1.
Top 5 Film Releases
This is a strong week for classics on DVD, with a few newer titles jumping int… the fray. We get 2 great box sets from Warner, a teenie bopper flick, an urban drama, and a old school Swayze. And on to the titles…
- Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 3 (Warner) – This third volume of the Film Noir collection brings five great classics film to DVD. We get Border Incident, His Kind of Woman, Lady in the Lake, On Dangerous Ground, & The Racket). If you like what Warner has done in the past with such titles, this se tis a must own.
- Warner Bros. Pictures Tough Guys Collection (Warner) – Another great box set full of classic “Tough Guy” flims. In this set, we get Bullets or Ballots, City for Conquest, Each Dawn I Die, G Men, San Quentin, & A Slight Case of Murder. Cudos to Warner for putting out sets like this!
- She’s the Man (Paramount) – This teen comedy starring Amanda Bynes had a good run in the theaters (for what it is), and now makes its way to DVD. This disc will probably find its way into many family homes, and is good clean fun for the whole family.
ATL (Warner) – This looks like an interesting urban drama/comedy. Starring rap artist T.I., this coming of age film is sure to be filled with great Hip-Hop music.
Road House (Deluxe Edition) (MGM) – Good old Patrick Swayze returns in one of his biggest hits in Road House. Released shortly after Dirty Dancing and proceeding Ghost, Road House hit a home run with Swayze starring as a touch nosed bouncer trying to clean up a local bar. By today’s standards, this film is pretty bad, but for those who like to reminisce on the good old days of Swayze, this is worth checking out.
Top 5 TV on DVD Releases
Some great titles are getting released in the world of TV on DVD this week. From classics shows finally making their way to disc, to some current day favorites. Here is what you can find on the shelves today…
- Carnivale - The Complete Second Season (HBO) – HBO never disappoints when releasing their BIG shows on DVD, and Carnivale – The Complete Second Season is no exception. We get a great show, presented in great all around quality (Audio/Video/Extras). And you’ve gotta love the packaging!
- Amazing Stories - The Complete First Season (Universal) – Fans have been betting for this show to be released on DVD for years, and they finally get their wish. This much loved Steven Spielberg directed series from the mid-80’s should be a fun one to check out after all of these years.
- The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - The Complete Series (Warner) – Bruce Campbell… gotta love him. Campbell stars in this Western series from the early 90’s – post Evil Dead success which propelled him to cult status. I have never seen this show, but as a fan of Campbell, I figure it is worth checking out.
- Jack of All Trades - The Complete Series (Universal) – Bruce Campbell once again returns on the small screen, this time in the 2000 series called Jack of All Trades. I had never heard of this show, but again, Campbell makes this worth giving a spin.
- The Incredible Hulk - The Complete First Season (Universal) – Another classic show hitting store shelves for the first time. Fans of The Incredible Hulk will love to re-play their favorite episodes of Bruce Banner and his alter ego.
Top 1 HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Releases
Not much happening on the HD front this week, with only one title being released…
- ATL [HD DVD] (Warner) – As mentioned above, this is an urban drams/comedy starring T.I. While I cannot see this as a must-buy HD release, at least Warner continues to push the format.
That’s it for this week… check back again next Tuesday to see what makes our list.
