Backlash over Paramount’s switch to HD DVDBy Jeremy Frost on August-23-2007 in News and Opinions Reactions from some heavy-weight Hollywood directors is starting to trickle in following the announcement that Paramount has dropped Blu-ray, in favor of an exclusive deal with HD DVD. HighDefDigest broke news that Steven Spielberg is a “Big Supporter” of Blu-ray, and he made sure that his films were not included in any exclusive HD DVD deal that Paramount made. While not excited about the thought of his films making their way to HD DVD, he is very excited to see his classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind make its way to Blu-ray this November 13th. Michael Bay recently went on a little rant on his personal website about his dissatisfaction that Paramount made this move. He stated that “I want people to see my movies in the best formats possible. For them to deny people who have Blu-ray sucks! They were progressive by having two formats. No ‘Transformers 2′ for me!” Bay has since retracted his statement by saying “As a director, I’m all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard firsthand people upset about a corporate decision. So today I saw 300 on HD, it rocks! So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2! “, but the fact that the thought initially entered his mind says something. As more reactions come in over this surprising turn of events in the HD battle of supremacy, we will be sure to bring the news to you.
