Sub $300 Blu-ray player hits Wal-mart

By Brian Wortz on May-8-2008 in News and Opinions

Word on the street is that some Wal-marts are beginning to carry a Magnavox branded Blu-ray player in the $288-298 price range as well as the Samsung 1500 for just under $350. Little is know about the Maganavox unit yet, however it has been suggested in various forums that the product is manufactured by Funai of Japan and may be a re-branded Phillips player. Funai is also expected to be manufacturing players under the brands: Sylvania, Insignia (Best Buy), and Pye (Circuit City). It appears the player DOES NOT carry 5.1 analog outs which isn’t surprising given the entry level price. It is also unknown whether or not this player will decode HD audio formats internally. The player is, however, expected to be Profile 1.1 according to a recent Funai press release . Hopefully we’ll hear more about these players soon. Can anyone smell a $200 BD player in time for Christmas?

I was in a brand new Walmart yesterday (just opened yesterday) and the only player they had was the Sony priced at 388.

It’s nice to see prices drop but I would warn anyone away from buying a non 2.0 profile BD.
PS3 is still the best deal out there and has been great in software upgrades to take advantage of the newer audio options. I’ve had mine a year next month and still love it.

I am more than satisfied with my BD30 and feel no need for a 2.0 player at this time.

PS3 and BD30 are both great players. To me 2.0 is still a gimmick, but we’ll see. the BD50 looks extremely promising if you’ve got the cash :)

It won’t be a gimmick when you start buying discs you can’t play or see audio formats your player won’t decode.
I can see why most people wouldn’t care, and if those players work for you, great.
I’m just saying that for some of us it’s important to be able to take full advantage of whatever the discs offer.
You might not need it, but it’s certainly no gimmick.

I was back in that same walmart and saw the Magnavox for $298.00. I must have missed it the other day.

As far as 2.0, isn’t that just for BD Live? If so, for me that is no big deal. Online content, for me, means nothing.

yeah, been there, done that with HD DVD already. While it offered some cool features it was far from neccessary. Puts Blu-ray where HD DVD was on Day 1.
Has nothing to do with audio formats or being able to play certain discs. It’s only for downloadable content. Profile 1.1 is “final profile” all that will be needed as far as standard features go.
Here’s a nice explaination:
