    Ancient Aliens: Season 8

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on January 12th, 2016

“Millions of people around the world believe we have been visited in the past by extraterrestrial beings. What if it were true? Did ancient aliens really help to shape our history? And if so, what if there were clues left behind, something hiding in plain sight? What if we could find that evidence?”

Ever since Eric von Daniken released his speculative book and its subsequent 1970 film Chariots of the Gods, there has been an entire field of study created around something commonly called Ancient Astronaut Theory, the idea is that extraterrestrials have visited many of our ancient civilizations.

The Best of Ancient Aliens (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on September 25th, 2012

“Ancient monuments precisely aligned to celestial events. History written in stone honoring otherworldly rulers. And a calendar accurately predicting shifts in the Earth’s axis every 26,000 years. Did the Mayans of Central America really create one of the most advanced civilizations of ancient times? Or did their intelligence originate somewhere else? Perhaps out of this world.”

Tuesday Round Up: January 5, 2016

Posted in Contests, Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on January 5th, 2016

Happy 2016, everybody! We closed last year with a bang — and I’m not just talking about the fireworks above UpcomingDiscs headquarters on New Year’s Eve — and we’re hitting the ground running for our first Tuesday Round Up of 2016. HBO is on the case with True Detective: Season 2. Cinedigm is Full of Grace, plays a Kill Game, offers a horror twist with Little Dead Rotting Hood, and is en pointe with ballet drama Flesh and Bone. Shout! Factory cops to Hill Street Blues: The Final Season, and the studio’s Scream Factory chills us to the bone with The House Where Evil Dwells/Ghost Warrior double feature. Meanwhile, A&E examines more evidence of Ancient Aliens: Season 8.

You can already read our takes on Universal’s The Visit and Green Inferno, along with RLJ Entertainment’s Adulterers and XLrator’s Wrecker. RLJ is also playing fetch with Robo-Dog, while XLrator keeps us at Close Range. Magnolia enters the lab with Experimenter, Green Apple Entertainment shares Susie’s Hope, and Comedy Central gives us a tour of Broad City: Season 2. Finally, Lionsgate takes a trip to Mercury Plains and dives into the Battle for Skyark, while Paramount holds us Captive.

Phew! That’s a lot of options to choose from for our first DVD giveaway of 2016. Before we get to that, let’s offer a hearty congratulations to our December winner: Vicki Wurgler, who won Field of Lost Shoes on DVD.

Vicki is our last Round Up winner of 2015, but you have a chance to seize the first prize for 2016. Once a month we’re going to give away a surprise DVD title from our archives to a lucky winner who comments in our weekly Round-Up posts. All you have to do is comment in a Round-Up post — like this one! — and tell us which of the featured titles you’re most curious to read about. (Quick reminder: You’re not telling us which title you’d like to win; your free DVD will be a surprise.)

The winners and their prizes will be announced the first week of every month right here in our Tuesday Round-Up post. You can’t win if you don’t comment. Contest is open to residents of the U.S and Canada.

One last reminder before signing off for the week: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

    CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED!

Tuesday Round Up: July 21, 2015

Posted in Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on July 21st, 2015

An offbeat vampire comedy and a fresh batch of alien-related theories highlight the latest crop of Blu-ray and DVD releases. Keep an eye on the site this week to find out what we think of What We Do in the Shadows. You’ll also be able to unearth our take on Ancient Aliens: Season 7 – Volume 1. On top of that, we’ve got reviews scheduled for the documentary 72 %, and horror-comedy The Jokesters.

Other titles coming out this week include the Robert Duvall Western Wild Horses, and the Donnie Yen martial arts thriller Kung Fu Killer, along with season 2 of Looking, and season 7 of Robot Chicken. As always, we’d love to hear from you: which of this week’s releases are you most excited about? And since we have stuff flying into UpcomingDiscs headquarters throughout the week — like the copy of Ex-Machina that arrived after last week’s Tuesday Round Up — be sure to keep an eye on this post for updates.

    The Pyramid (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on May 19th, 2015

If nothing else, The Pyramid has an intriguing premise. A father-daughter archaeologist team discovers an unusual, three-sided pyramid buried 600 feet underground that might even predate the ancient Egyptians. Essentially, this is Ancient Aliens as a found-footage horror film. Yes…unfortunately, I said “found footage,” a cinematic device that now feels even more decrepit than your garden variety mummy. So while the film’s opening act probably got people like this guy extremely excited, the movie falls apart the deeper the characters descend into the titular pyramid.

    Holiday Gift Guide Spotlight: A&E

Posted in Holiday Gift Guides by Gino Sassani on December 24th, 2014

A&E always has something for everyone. They changed the landscape of television by turning the reality show on its head. Instead of losers trying to win a prize by acting like idiots, the cameras of A&E’s shows take us in to the often bizarre and hyper-real worlds of pawn shops, ice road truckers and pest control businesses. The team has put together some nice sets to help fill some gaps in the collection of someone on your shopping list. It’s time to load up on some of these collectible sets before someone ends up with coal in their stocking

    Man of Steel (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on November 14th, 2013

“What if a child dreamed of becoming something other than what society had intended? What if a child aspired to something greater?”

It’s appropriate that exactly 75 years ago this very month Superman was born at the hands of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. He was born to be the patriotic hero symbol for a nation on the brink of a devastating world war. The war came and went as many others would since the hero’s inception. Styles would change. Technology would come and go. Superman would find himself invading each and every medium that has come along since.

America’s Book of Secrets: Season 1

Posted in Disc Reviews by Brent Lorentson on October 2nd, 2012

Following in the footsteps of Ancient Aliens, History Channel has put out a new ten-part series to indulge viewers that simply can’t watch enough government mystery and conspiracy television.  I’m not here to judge, because I’ll be the first to admit, when I see there is a new show about Area 51, the Freemasons, or anything with the word secret, I’m a sucker for watching it.  I blame my compulsive obsession with conspiracies from watching the X-Files when I was younger for this.

    John Carter (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by M. W. Phillips on June 6th, 2012

“When I saw you, I believed it was a sign… that something new can come into this world.”

John Carter first appeared in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom magazine serial nearly a century ago in 1912. The science fiction pioneering Carter stories captured the imagination of masses and inspired countless authors and directors. For example, George Lucas himself has stated there would be no Star Wars without John Carter of Mars. It took nearly a century to get it to screen and in time countless others have mined the series for inspiration.

Star Trek Beyond (UHD Blu-ray) (4K)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on November 2nd, 2016

“Space… The final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission, to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before.”

Every Star Trek fan knows the words by heart. For 50 years they’ve heralded the promise of something special. From the television show that couldn’t but did anyway to 12 feature films. Would #13 be the lucky one? The trailers left many of us worried that it would more than likely be unlucky.

    DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: Season 1 (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on September 1st, 2016

“In 2166 an immortal tyrant named Vandal Savage conquered the world and murdered my wife and child. I’ve assembled an elite team to hunt him throughout time and stop his rise to power. Unfortunately, my plan was opposed by the body I had sworn my allegiance to: The Time Masters. In the future my friends might not be heroes, but if we succeed, they will be remembered as legends.”

Marvel may have beaten DC to the superhero team-up film. But while Marvel continues to blow away the DC filmatic universe, DC has had its best and most brilliant successes here on television. DC Legends of Tomorrow is pretty much the first television comic book team-up, and it’s a direct spinoff from both Arrow and The Flash shows.

“31 Nights Of Terror” There Is a 13,000 Year Old Black Knight Satellite Orbiting the Earth

Posted in Random Fun by Paul on October 25th, 2015

The Black Knight satellite is one of many tantalizing so-called true tales that are circulating on YouTube and various cable outlets like the History Channel. I say so-called true tales because many believe stories about aliens are total nonsense. But not everyone believes so. A National Geographic survey says 77 percent of all Americans believe there are signs that aliens have visited Earth. A Harris poll says 68 percent of all Americans believe that Jesus is the son of God. A HuffPost/YouGov poll shows that 45 percent believe in ghosts and 64 percent believe in life after death. A 2009 CBS poll said 78 percent believe in the afterlife. I could go on, but it is all in the same general range.
