Most Played over Xbox Live, Lego Rock Band & Illinois Senate hates alcohol? - Welcome to the column that would be rich if it had a nickel for every bad gaming idea to be made this year known as Dare to Play the Game.

I am currently not playing Fable II, I know you are in shock. So since my time in WoW is limited on purpose; what exactly am I playing? Believe it or not, Lego Star Wars CS and Burnout Revenge. Not Paradise, the older one.

Video Game Physiques, Sixty Dollar Standard Disappearing & Michael Phelps: Next Action Hero? - Welcome to the column that brings in the New Year with as much booze, chicken wings and women that $10 and witty jokes will get him known as Dare to Play the Game.

This past week I found myself playing two games in the 360 arena: Fable II & Lego Batman. In Fable II, I went to the task of getting all of the achievements that I reasonably could on my “good” character. This included things like getting married, having a child, getting married again, etc.

Death to the Clamshell, Guitar Hero: Metallica Edition & Breath of Fire dismissed? - Welcome to the column that Santa Claus brought three non-working N64’s, two suspended WoW accounts and no Morgan Webb in a pear tree known as Dare to Play the Game.

This weekend I beat Fable II. Now, many beat this game a long time ago but I was taking my time. I wanted to be in line for certain achievements and my hard work payed off. As a result of buying Giles’ farm, I found myself to be the recipient of a wonderful weapon. Ever see Army of Darkness? I got me what can only be described as a boomstick.

Crying in Games, Need for Speed headed for the scrap heap & the Used Games debate - Welcome to the column that can be bought new, used or in a junkyard underneath the blue cowboy boots that your mom gave you known as Dare to Play the Game.

My 120gb hard drive for my 360 has been working quite well. I had the opportunity to test it on Fable 2 quite a bit over the past week. The Xbox no longer sounds like a tractor train ready to explode at any moment. As reported, loading is much faster. Any of the major areas in Fable load much faster giving me more actual playtime. So far, the investment seems worth it which was something I was quite worried about at one point.

Saw gets axed, No Aliens for Sigourney Weaver, and Age of Conan tanking - Welcome to the column that is considering slicing its wrists if it has to do any more writeups on remakes of Nintendo 64 games known as Dare to Play the Game.

Finally, I got my 120gb hard drive for my 360 on Monday night. There were a few messups in communication between the third party seller and myself but everything was resolved when I received the package. It was opened, however the hard drive, transfer kit, cd and manual all looked brand new as described on Amazon. I hooked it up to my 360 and started to transfer my files. Took about a little over half an hour. Then when it was finished, it said the curious message of “Some files were not transferred…they have been deleted”.

    The Dickens, You Say

Posted in Random Fun by Gino Sassani on December 8th, 2008

That’s right, gentle reader, it’s fast approaching Christmas. Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843, and today it is the single most filmed Holiday story ever. There are over 12 film versions, of one sort or another. There have also been literally hundreds of adaptations for various television shows over the decades. My favorite was always the Sanford and Son episode where grumpy Fred meets with the Christmas Spirits, who bear a striking resemblance to a certain “Big Dummy”. Fred soon learns the true meaning of Christmas, a secret that most of us have, hopefully, known for years. For me, the best film version of the tale is the 1951 version with Alistair Sim as ol’ Scrooge. No other beats it for atmosphere.

Since that time a lot of Holiday films and specials have come and gone. Some have gone on to become classics, while others are best quickly forgotten lest we are tempted to lose our Christmas spirit. Here at the Sassani home there are two that have become as much a part of Christmas tradition as trees and eggnog. I simply adore A Christmas Story. I always loved Darrin McGavin, and he’s perfect here as the “Old Man”. He even offers us a Kolchak moment as he’s reading the paper and lets out one of his Kolchak sounding “It’s Neeeews”. The story is a simple one that each of us has experienced at some time or another. For Ralphy it was a Red Ryder BB gun with a compass in the stock, but all of us have chased that elusive gift we coveted with all of our hearts. The narration is perfect and is presented by Jean Shepherd who wrote the original source material, “In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash”. Shepherd can also be seen as the man who tells the kids to go to the back of the line to see Santa. Coupled with the Boris Karloff rendition of The Grinch, we watch these Holiday classics each and every Christmas Eve. One of these years I’ll even get it in Blu-ray.

So what are your favorite Christmas films or specials? Let us know and share some of your holiday film memories and traditions in our comment section below. A movie can be the perfect excuse to spend quality time with your own loved ones.

From all of us here at Upcomingdiscs we wish you the best of the coming Holiday Season.

(And don’t shoot your eye out, okay?)

Follow this song link to a Christmas Song I composed a few years ago, called Passage.

It’s a musical Christmas card from us to you:

Dominating 360’s, GTA IV making mistakes, and Escapist Gaming - Welcome to the column with copy protection that can only be decrypted with sharp wit or a giant pair of “hackers” known as Dare to Play the Game.

Last week was Thanksgiving. I ate lots of turkey, I ate lots of pie. The combination made me sleep until well today. No, okay okay not really. However, I had no desire to go out to Black Friday and found myself sitting at home for most of the weekend.

    Site Announcement - UpcomingDiscs Sold!

Posted in News and Opinions by Jeremy Frost on December 1st, 2008

Since starting UpcomingDiscs.com almost eight years ago, Rod and I have done our best to grow UpcomingDiscs into something that we are very proud of. In the last year or so, with many other ventures taking up our time, we have not giving UpcomingDiscs the time and effort that it deserves. Therefore, it is with mixed emotions that I announce that we have sold UpcomingDiscs.com.

While it was a hard decision to come to, we feel that we have sold the sites to someone who has the passion and drive to take these sites to the next level – Gino Sassani - who will take ownership of UpcomingDiscs.com effective immediately. We have complete faith in Gino and his ability to return UpcomingDiscs back to its glory days… and we ask that you stay along for the ride.

While we are parting ways with UpcomingDiscs.com, Rod & I will continue to own/operate both IntotheBlu.com (Blu-ray reviews and release news) and HDDb.net (High Definition Database).

It was a great eight years and we thank all of you for your continued support!

    Jeremy Frost & Rod Edwards

Last week, I mentioned the fun subject of storage. My dvd spinner arrived and was assembled on Monday. On Tuesday, we took the liberty of splitting up my current spinner so they would be even. It looks much better and as promised I have put a for trade list on the forum. Here is the link.

Yesterday was Election Day in the grand ole United States of America. While I could go on a nice rant about the person who got elected, this is not a politics column and I tend to steer far far away from such discussions.

I am currently sitting in Ohio. Oh Hi Oh. We’ve had a nice time in the Buckeye state but keeping it mostly simplistic. The temperature has been very cool for this time of year at least for me. As a result I’ve come down with a slight cold or allergies or something that makes me all sneezy, runny nose, stuffy nose and general bad things with my nasal region.

Ha, well the Ike debris still exists. It’s like a fungus actually. At some point, I expect it to sprout wings and engulf my house. Somehow, I don’t think FEMA or my insurance covers such things or the deductible might be too high.

I’ve been a little busy this week. That might be a good thing, I think. Debris is still being picked up around my home. It’s going a bit slowly since I don’t have access to a truck and for the most part people in my subdivision rather keep to themselves. Shocking I know in this day and age, people are selfish even when offered money.

I’m still here. Aren’t you glad? Don’t answer that. After a rather rough two weeks, I hope to return to a fairly normal column with fairly normal jokes and fairly normal news which don’t involve me huddled on the floor with my thumb in my mouth and my body in the fetal position. It’s not a pretty picture and I don’t want to repeat it.

There wasn’t a column last week. I know, I’m sorry. I was too busy deciding what to do about Hurricane Ike. I had parts of it written last week time and time again. But I never could complete it because my heart wasn’t into it. My heart still isn’t 100% into it. You can blame it on Ike, or just hurricanes in general.
