Anyone who is a fan of horror or science fiction knows who Forry Ackerman was. He gave more to the industry than anyone else. He coined the term sci-fi and inspired the likes of Stephen King, John Landis, Steven Spielberg, and many others. He was the editor of Famous Monsters Of Filmland and held the largest collection of movie memorabilia anywhere in his famed Ackermuseum.
I’ve been lucky enough to have counted Uncle Forry as a friend since 1991, when I first visited the Ackermuseum. I’ve spent many hours and meals with him and miss him greatly.
I was invited to write and perform an original song tribute to Forry in January of 2000. It was my honor to perform the piece in front of a room of invited guests with Forry by my side. I was told that the plaque, containing the lyrics, remained one of his prized processions until the day he died, long after most of his collection had been sold.
Here is a video taken that day of the song I wrote and presented to Forry.

Hey Gang! Upcomingdiscs is finally on Youtube
For all of you classic horror fans, this is a song I wrote about my love for the old Universal greats. I was fortunate enough to have Sara Karloff (daughter to Boris), Ron Chaney (Grandson to Lon, Jr.) and Bela Lugosi, Jr. present when I debuted the song. Now I’d like to share it with all of you.

I’m happy to report that after a bunch of work the “Reviews” tab at the top has been significantly revamped. Its now, hopefully, a quicker, easier way to find a particular movie, or just browse our archives.
Click the “Reviews” tab to get started, and you’ll a big page full of different categories – so that you can see a list of our Blu-ray reviews, for instance, or Horror reviews (just in time for Hallowe’en), or Adult Swim reviews for when you’re feeling maturely humorous, or all reviews of films from Tartan Studios, when you’re feeling Asian.
The list pages are organized with 50 results per page (alphabetically), and include thumbnails of the covers where available. Click the cover or the title to go to the review, and you’re done!
Anyway, please comment any feedback, and happy browsing!
UPDATE: Some of the pages will be slow to load the first time – that’s the covers loading from Amazon. Fortunately, I tacked on a caching system to speed these requests, so as covers are cached, performance site-wide should perk up slightly (over the next few days).

Hey hey hey – here’s a new feature I stitched together – the Trailer Index!
Its a subsection of the site that collects trailers for reviews that we’ve posted, organized by Genre, playable right there, courtesy of YouTube. So – if you’re into SciFi, Action, or Drama, click on over and check out some trailers.
Final note: the trailer index will continue to grow as we add more trailers to both new reviews and our back catalog.
Enjoy!

I am a Trans-fan. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve seen Transformers three times in theaters so far, and intend to see it three more. Ok, the plot makes me cringe, the awkward character moments and expository dialog actually make me close my eyes – but the rest of the movie fulfills every boyhood super-destructive robo-fantasy in the most satisfying way possible.
That’s why the NYT review of Transformers really bugs me. Reviewer Manohla Dargis apparently didn’t pay close enough attention to get basic details straight, stating, for example, that:
There, under the desert sun, muscly, sweaty military types (Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson) clash with an ominous helicopter that converts into a mysteriously angry critter with an articulated tail like that of a scorpion. [NYT]
There was a time when I respected the NYT, which has now passed. >:(

Blogroll, Site News by Rod on July 25th, 2007
In the inner right-hand column you’ll see an area labelled “blogroll” – this is where we link out to other great DVD, Movie, Entertainment, or Whatever sites that we UpcomingDiscs bloggers frequent.
Got a suggestion for our blogroll? Your site? Other good DVD sites? Anything else we really should be reading?
Comment it and we’ll add it!
