Tuesday Round Up: February 14, 2017

Posted in Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on February 14th, 2017

Hello again movie lovers…and just lovers in general! It’s Valentine’s Day and I’m sure romance is in the air. It’s also Tuesday, which means it’s time for our weekly Round Up of reviews we’ve got coming your way. HBO rocks out with Quarry: Season 1, a drama about a Vietnam War veteran who gets a very unwelcome reception when he arrives back home. But wait, there’s more! (Heh-heh…I said “but.”) Paramount has made sure we’ll be planted on our couch watching Beavis and Butthead: The Complete Series. Finally, Paramount is also speaking our language with Arrival in 4K.

Before you run off to get that last minute Valentine’s gift, here’s for your weekly reminder until till next time: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

Tuesday Round Up: February 7, 2017

They stole his car and killed his dog…what more motivation does an impossibly deadly ex-hitman need to come out of retirement?! And now, John Wick is coming for us! Fortunately, it’s a friendly visit as Lionsgate releases John Wick in 4K ahead of this Friday’s release of John Wick: Chapter 2, which we will also be reviewing. On top of that, Lionsgate goes back in time with American Pastoral, gives us nightmare fuel with The Crooked Man, and offers a monster double feature with Frankenstein: The Real Story/The Real Wolfman. HBO misbehaves with Vice Principals: Season 1, while Sony stays up From Dusk Till Dawn: Season 3, and RLJ Entertainment gallops to the Dead West. (Be sure to check out our chat with Dead West star Jeffrey Arrington.) CBS/Paramount boldly goes to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine — The Complete Series, Cohen Media Group returns to the dawn of World War II with Come What May, and Warner Bros. saves the day thanks to Justice League Dark.

And speaking of “dark”, we have a pair of Reel World reviews coming this weekend to keep Mr. Wick company. Be sure to check back for our take on Fifty Shades Darker and to read whether everything in The Lego Batman Movie is awesome. Now it’s time for your weekly reminder before signing off: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. Welcome to an extra special edition of our Tuesday Round Up! This week, you have a chance to win $1 million! (OK, that’s not exactly true.) Actually, we’re giving away a brand new car! (Still not totally accurate.) How about a set of shiny new steak knives?! (Nope!) OK, OK, I’ll come clean…especially since my nose has grown so much from all this fibbing that it is currently poking my laptop screen. What can I say? I was so inspired by Disney’s Pinocchio: The Signature Collection release that I couldn’t help but stretch the truth. (Check back soon for our review of the cartoon classic.) Disney is also several moves ahead of us with the release of family chess drama Queen of Katwe. Finally, HBO lives the high life with Ballers: Season 2.

One last reminder before signing off for the week (and for January): if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

Howdy, Partners. Johnny’s a bit out to sea at the moment. Actually, he’s taking a cruise with Katie on that long-overdue honeymoon. I sure hope Tom Hanks isn’t driving the boat. Guess you’ll find out next week. For now, you’re stuck with me for this week’s release/review round-up.

Lionsgate is down for David Bowie’s cult classic The Man Who Fell To Earth in a collector’s edition Blu-ray. Baby will fill us in on A Dog’s Purpose in this week’s theatrical releases. National Geographic and Fox will scare up Sea Monsters on DVD. Maybe I should have passed that one on to John. It’s a slow week but there’s tons of stuff on the horizon.

And, Partners, don’t forget. If you’ll be making that video withdrawal from Amazon, lasso yourself one of our many links to get there. It helps keep us going here on the Upcomingdiscs ranch. Until next week, share some light with someone this week… television light, that is.

All aboard! We’re only a hair more than two weeks into 2017, but there’s already plenty of exciting stuff going on around these parts. (For example, check out our review of one of the top-of-the-line Ultra HD Blu-ray players on the market.) Fortunately, there’s still more than enough time for you get on this UpcomingDiscs train. Speaking of which, Universal hops aboard The Girl on the Train in 4K and plays a deadly game with Death Race 2050. Fox puts its faith in The Story of God: Season 1, while Magnolia Home Entertainment counts down to Zero Days. Candy Factory delivers The Babymooners, while Warner Bros. bids farewell to Rizzoli & Isles: The Final Season. Meanwhile, Paramount returns with Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 4K and boldly goes to Star Trek: Enterprise — The Complete Series.

But wait…there’s more! We’ve got a couple of theatrical releases we’ll be reviewing for the weekend. So be sure to check back and see if we’re lovin’ The Founder, and how we rate XXX: The Return of Xander Cage.

Here’s your customary reminder before signing off for the week: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

We’re only a couple of weeks away from the start of tax season, so it won’t hurt to have your trusty accountant nearby. Fortunately for us, Warner Bros. was kind enough to send a copy of The Accountant, the action hit that stars Ben Affleck as a math savant/killing machine. Elsewhere, Comedy Central yuks it up (and lights up) with Broad City: Season 3.

One last reminder before signing off for the week: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon — maybe a present or two — and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

The first Tuesday Round Up of 2017 is getting the New Year off to a spooky start. Lionsgate ventures back into the woods to meet up with the Blair Witch, while Fox makes us lose our heads thanks to Sleepy Hollow: Season 3. Finally, Reel Gore Releasing has a bloody good time with The Orphan Killer. Meanwhile in non-horror news, Cinedigm leaves behind The Ultimate Legacy, while HBO takes us back to the Big Apple (with a detour to Japan) to hang out with Girls: Season 5.

It might be a new year now, but you’re going to get the same weekly reminder before we sign off for the week: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

We are less than a week away from Santa making his annual jaunt around the globe. But as we inch closer to the magic of Christmas Eve, I want to talk about a different gray-haired pilot at the center of a wintry miracle. Thanks to Warner Bros., we’ll have a review of Sully in 4K, which examines the real-life “Miracle on the Hudson.” Speaking of taking flight, Warner was also kind enough to deliver Storks in 4K and 3D under our tree. Meanwhile, Lionsgate counts to 31, and Candy Factory hikes with the Children of the Mountain.

One last reminder before signing off for the week: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon (time’s running out to get those Christmas presents delivered on time!) and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

We’re smack dab in the middle of Christmas frenzy, and I know of a certain group of boys and girls who’ve landed on Santa’s naughty list. Sure, the supervillains in Warner Bros. Suicide Squad might end up saving the world, but they also cause plenty of trouble along the way. We’ll soon have a review of the comic book blockbuster’s 4K edition, so be sure to keep an eye on our site. Elsewhere, Fox introduces us to Morgan, while Cinedigm boards Stagecoach: The Texas Jack Story. Paramount reacquaints us with a new Ben-Hur, Magnolia Home Entertainment thinks small with Little Men, and Lionsgate quacks us up with Duck Dynasty: Season 10. And oh yeah…a scrappy little underdog tale called Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters this Friday, which isn’t far, far away at all. Once the movie is out, our review will be up before you can say “Death Star.”

Here’s your weekly reminder before signing off for the week: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon — maybe a Christmas present or two — and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

Posted in Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on December 6th, 2016

You know his name. Yes, this is officially the first Tuesday Round Up of December, but no…I’m not talking about Ol’ St. Nick. Instead, we’re welcoming everyone’s favorite amnesiac assassin back into the fold. Universal reacquaints us with Jason Bourne, which arrives in sparkling 4K. CBS recounts a tale as old as time with Beauty & the Beast: The Final Season and zones out with BrainDead: Season 1. Cohen Media Group tours the stately Howard’s End, Lionsgate keeps it all in the family with Greenleaf: Season 1, and Magnolia Home Entertainment seeks out In Order of Disappearance. Finally, Warner Bros. revs up Mad Max: Fury Road — Chrome Edition, which presents the action blockbuster in black and white.

One last reminder before signing off for the week: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon — maybe a Christmas present or two — and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

Thanksgiving is in the rear view mirror, which means we are officially smack dab in the middle of the holidays. And what better way to kick off the most wonderful time of the year than with a little Disney magic? The Mouse House was generous enough to float us a copy of Pete’s Dragon, so be sure to check back later for our review. Meanwhile, Showtime keeps us honest with House of Lies: The Final Season.

One last reminder before signing off for the week (and for November): if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon — maybe a Christmas present or two — and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

It is Tuesday, November 22…do you know where your pets are? Turns out our furry friends might be getting into some exciting adventures when we’re not around. Thankfully, Universal has been kind enough to offer us a close, ultra HD look at these animal shenanigans with The Secret Life of Pets in 4K. Elsewhere, HBO searches for love with Looking: The Complete Series and The Movie, RLJ entertainment gets some assistance from the I.T. department, and Severin delves into The Killing of America. Lionsgate gets sequel-happy with Return of the Living Dead III, C.H.U.D. II, and The Mechanic: Resurrection. Finally, we’ll also be bringing you a pair of pre-Thanksgiving theatrical releases as Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard play spy games in Allied and Billy Bob Thornton returns for more debauched Christmas fun in Bad Santa 2.

Tuesday Round Up: November 15, 2016

Posted in Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on November 15th, 2016

Christmas decorations have been creeping onto store shelves for weeks now and temperatures here in the Sunshine State have begun to plummet all the way down into the high 50’s. Those are two sure signs that winter is coming. Here’s another: the latest batch of episodes from a certain wildly popular HBO fantasy series arrives this week. Game of Thrones: Season 6 highlights our latest Tuesday Round Up, but there is plenty more you should look forward to. Anchor Bay enlists in the Army of One, while Paramount boldly goes to toon town with Star Trek: The Animated Series.

On top of all that, this is also an extremely busy week in terms of theatrical releases we’ll be reviewing. Be sure to come back to the site this weekend to see if Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them recaptures the magic of Harry Potter, and whether Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk scores with fans.

The odds that you’ll be reading a review of The Hunger Games saga on our site this week are ever in your favor. Lionsgate has given each of the four flicks in the blockbuster YA franchise — The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay: Part 1 and Part 2 — spiffy new 4K releases, so keep an eye out for what we have to say. Meanwhile, RLJ Entertainment is looking for payback with Kickboxer: Vengeance, and Showtime puts its money where its mouth is with Billions: Season 1.

This week, we are boldly going where no Tuesday Round Up has gone before: November 2016! Yes, it’s a new month, and we’re excited to announce that you will soon be able to read our review of Paramount’s Star Trek Beyond, which arrives to us in spiffy 4K. And from the furthest reaches of  outer space we go to…the American West. Entertainment One gets us back on track with Hell on Wheels: Season 5, Volume 2.

Even though it’s a brand new month, the same reminder still applies here: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

Tuesday Round Up: October 25, 2016

Posted in Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on October 25th, 2016

I won’t keep you in the dark much longer: the final Tuesday Round Up of October features one of this year’s surprise horror hits. My face lit up when I saw that Warner Bros. was kind enough to send us a copy of Lights Out, and you can already check out our review here. On top of that, we’ve already posted our takes for Suddenly (courtesy of Film Detective) and The Midnight Swim (from Passion River Films). Passion River also goes for a stroll with the Girl in Woods. Finally, Lionsgate cooks up a warm family drama with Mr. Church and gets into some action/comedy hijinks with Skiptrace.

Even though this is our last Tuesday Round Up of the spooky season, there are still plenty of thrills and chills to be had on our site. Keep checking back each day for our “31 Nights of Terror” and enter to win a free prize in our many contests. Also, if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

While it may not technically be eligible for our “31 Nights of Terror”, one of our entries this week absolutely qualifies as a horror show. Everything that can go wrong, does go wrong for the young protagonist in HBO’s The Night Of. But let’s not forget that it’s still October, so we’ve got a double feature more suitable for the spooky season. Vestron brings some familiar monsters to life with its Waxwork Collector’s Series, which includes both Waxwork and Waxwork II: Lost in Time.

Elsewhere, Lionsgate gets paternal and protective with Blood Father, and Allied brings the heat with She Who Must Burn.

Posted in Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on October 4th, 2016

Welcome to the first Tuesday Round Up of October! You’ve probably noticed that the spooky season is in full swing around these parts thanks to our “31 Nights of Terror” and we’re going to keep the monster mayhem going thanks to Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: The Final Season. In other horror-related news, Level 33 leave us in scary hands with The Caretaker, while Allied Entertainment giddily declares OMG…We’re in a Horror Movie. RLJ Entertainment sees things through The Mind’s Eye, and Lionsgate digs deep with 6 Plots. (You’re in luck: enter to win a copy of 6 Plots by clicking here!) Magnolia bedevils us with Satanic and (in non-horror news) pays respect to The Last King.

Anchor Bay sows some Wild Oats, and Time Life stays up late for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson: The Vault Series — Archive Collection (which features the incomparable Joan Embery, who we got to chat with recently). Finally, HBO bids an action-packed farewell to Banshee: The Final Season.

Interested in picking up any of these thrilling titles? Well, if you’re shop for them — or anything at all — on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

Posted in Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on September 27th, 2016

It’s getting to be that time of year. The color orange and the sheer number of pumpkin spice-flavored offerings are about to officially become overwhelming. That’s right…it’s almost October, which also means the arrival of the spooky season. As always, we’ll have plenty more on that front once October properly kicks off. But in the meantime, this week’s Round Up is highlighted by a pair of creepy throwback flicks. Lionsgate takes a violent trip to the Chopping Mall and has a killer meal at the Blood Diner. Meanwhile, ABC/Disney is on the case with The Catch: Season 1, while Warner Bros. courts some royal drama with Reign: Season 3. Finally, Film Detective discovers some Patterns in a Rod Serling-scripted 1950s drama.

One last reminder before signing off for the week (and for September): if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

Is anybody up for some pizza? I know four sewer-dwelling superheroes who would happily jump at that offer any day of the week. So for this Tuesday (Round Up), we’re excited about the emergence of Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in 4K. Elsewhere, CBS lays down the law with Blue Bloods: Season 6 and marshals in Gunsmoke: Season 12. Finally, Eagle Rock does it ol’ blue eyes’ way with The Frank Sinatra Collection: Part 2.

Summer’s winding down, and the chillier temperatures of fall and winter are just around the corner…well, at least for those of you who live outside of Florida. As we brace for another unseasonably warm autumn — fingers crossed I’m wrong! — UpcomingDiscs HQ will get a blast of wintry air this week. Join us as we bundle up to explore Wonders of the Arctic in 4K courtesy of Shout! Factory, which also dives underwater to explore The Last Reef in 4K. Lionsgate steals from the rich with Marauders, and ABC/Disney undergoes rigorous training at Quantico: Season 1. Finally, Eagle Rock invites us to come sail away with Styx: Live at the Orleans.

Time flies when you’re having as much fun as we are cranking out our patented TV and movie reviews for you. But it still doesn’t move quite as fast as a certain superhero making a long awaited return to home video. Warner Bros taps into the speed force to bring us The Flash: Season 2 and still finds time to go monster hunting with Supernatural: Season 11. CBS/Paramount tries its luck with Friday the 13th: The Complete Series, goes on down to South Park: Season 19, logs on to CSI: Cyber — The Final Season, and devotes brainpower to Limitless: Season 1. Finally, Magnolia Home Entertainment becomes acquainted with The Ones Below, while HBO goes All the Way with its Lyndon B. Johnson TV flick.

As the philosopher Randy Newman once sang, it’s a jungle out there. And this week — thanks to a certain smash-hit, live-action re-imagining of an animated classic — it’s a Jungle at UpcomingDiscs HQ too!  Disney was kind enough to send us The Jungle Book on Blu-ray, which certainly qualifies as more than the bare necessities. (You can already check out our review here.) Warner Bros. hits the mark with Arrow: Season 4 and revels in debauchery with Shameless: Season 6. ABC checks into Grey’s Anatomy: Season 12, while Sony spies on The Night Manager. Finally, CBS heads out west for Season 7 of NCIS: L.A., and gets in our heads with Criminal Minds: Season 11.

The time-hopping team at the center of The CW’s latest superhero hit may come from Tomorrow, but thanks to Warner Bros. you can get caught up with their adventures today! DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: Season 1 is just one of the highlights in this week’s Tuesday Round Up. Warner also travels back to the ’70s with The Nice Guys and heads, um, a little further south to introduce is to Lucifer: Season 1. Universal is the fairest of them all thanks to a spiffy 4K edition of The Huntsman: Winter’s War. CBS/Paramount flaunts superstition with NCIS: Season (lucky) 13, and the game is afoot thanks to Elementary: Season 4. Finally, Lionsgate goes mano-a-mano with The Duel, while Anchor Bay bypasses laughs and goes straight for chills with Clown.
