Rambo: The Complete Collector’s Set (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 21st, 2010

In Florida we have some very large bugs. There’s this one particular spider that is quite a problem in my house. It’s real name is a huntsman spider, and it grows to about 16 feet, not including the legs. It sports 27-inch fangs and tends to move the furniture around at night while it stalks its prey. Yes, it stalks its prey at night in my house while I’m trying to sleep. Years ago I coined my own name for these clever, ferocious killers. I call them Rambo Spiders. The name fits these long-legged freaks perfectly as they perform their recon missions throughout our home. When I find them, I terminate them with extreme prejudice.

Emerson, Lake, & Palmer: Live at Montreaux 1997 (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 20th, 2010

“Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. We’re so glad you could attend. Come inside. Come inside.”

The rock gods must have been smiling when Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer journeyed from their perspective corners of the music world and combined to form the band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, or merely ELP to the fans.

G.I. Joe the Movie (Special Edition) (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on July 19th, 2010

G.I. Joe the Movie was originally supposed to be a real box office movie. It was to be the first of three animated motion pictures put out by Hasbro Toys. The other two were based on Transformers and My Little Pony. However, production delays caused the other two to go first. When Transformers and My Little Pony did poorly (gee, never would have guessed that a talking magical pony failed to grab box office sales), it was decided that G.I. Joe would go the direct video route. Years later, it still proved to be arguably the best of the three.

    The Bounty Hunter (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 19th, 2010

In an attempt to win over more of the male viewers into their audiences, filmmakers of the romantic comedy genre have tried many tactics. To date, very few of them have worked to any great extent. The problem appears to be getting the mixture just right. Too much of the guy stuff and you’ll turn away your core “chick” audience. Too little and you’re really not reeling in too many guys. Of course, we go anyway to please the ladies in our lives.

Hot Tub Time Machine (Unrated) (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 15th, 2010

The name says it all. With just those four words, you can pretty much figure out everything you need to know about Hot Tub Time Machine. This is very much a party film in the tradition of the Saturday Night Live alumni movies of the 70’s and 80’s. With the release of this movie, you no longer need to travel back in time to 1986 to watch a film that relies almost entirely on sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll for most of its situational comedy. The rest gets filled in with your standard toilet humor. I’m not sure exactly when it happened, or who exactly I should blame

    Ladybugs (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 15th, 2010

Lionsgate has as good a collection of catalog titles as any studio out there.  Many of these films have not yet been given the high definition Blu-ray treatment for one reason or another. So I’m sitting here trying to figure out how a trivial film like Ladybugs jumped the line and finds itself in a barebones release on Blu-ray this month. I’m sure that the movie has its fans. Of course, I’ve never met any of them, but I gotta believe that they’re out there … somewhere.

    Jimmy Hollywood (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 13th, 2010

I get the impression that things didn’t quite work out for Joe Pesci the way he might have originally intended. There’s a heart of a serious actor buried somewhere deep under the makeup of a clown.  Who can forget the dead-eyed killer Tommy from Goodfellas? Most of us have that restaurant scene engraved in our heads where Tommy asked the immortal question “Do I amuse you?” Well … Joe, actually, you do. And putting aside his initial role of Joey in Raging Bull and the aforementioned Tommy with its carbon-copied Casino character, Pesci has made the most noise by amusing us.

    Predator (Ultimate Hunter Edition) (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 13th, 2010

When I was a kid in the 80’s, Predator was one of those films that you weren’t supposed to watch, but everybody did anyway. Over-the-top action, invincible heroes, cheesy one-liners and big, big explosions made this a film that was a favorite of pre-pubescent boys everywhere. Going into this disc, I found myself wondering if the film would stand up to the harsh tests of time and maturity.

    The Crazies (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 7th, 2010

Mention the name of George A. Romero to anyone even remotely familiar with horror movies, and the first thing they’re going to think of is zombies. Why shouldn’t they? It was Romero who made what might be the first little film that could. Long before Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, Romero set out with his trusty 16 mm camera and a crew of pretty much local Pittsburgh friends, to make Night Of The Living Dead. With this film and the ongoing “Dead” franchise, Romero has pretty much written the rule book on zombies. He is no doubt the zombie king.

How the Earth Changed History (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on June 29th, 2010

“The Earth has immense power, and yet that’s rarely mentioned in our history books. I’m here to change all that.”

The BBC has a reputation of putting out some very high quality documentaries, particularly recently in the high-definition age. Planet Earth became an award winning series lauded all over the globe for its stunning photography and epic tales. Most recently I watched and reviewed their Life series. Once again the series was dominated by startling images, many never before captured on film, all in wonderful high definition. Now I have a chance to visit yet another recent BBC project:

    Last Station, The (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on June 28th, 2010

Most people associate the book, War and Peace in the same respects as they do torture. A one thousand, two hundred and twenty five page book that is regarded as one of the most brilliant pieces of historical fiction is a nightmare to most advanced high school and college kids. However, perhaps more fascinating than any single piece of work by Leo Tolstoy is the life in which he lead. Last Station attempts to give us the last few years of the Count’s life in film form.

Showgirls (15th Anniversary Sinsational Edition) (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on June 23rd, 2010

Whenever there is a disaster, there are always the inevitable questions that follow. Where did it all begin? Could it have been avoided? What can we learn from this? No, I’m not talking about the oil leak in the Gulf.  Hollywood is no exception. You have your disaster movies like Earthquake, and you have your movies that are disasters like Waterworld. Of course there are even disaster movies that are also disasters like the recent 2012. Some disasters you never see coming. But, many such events could have been predicted and possibly avoided if only the right folks had been paying attention. This is the story of one such event: Showgirls.

    Life (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on June 15th, 2010

“Three years of filming. Seven continents. 70 camera crews. 3,000 shooting days. 200 different species. Groundbreaking technology. It all adds up to the most ambitious natural history series ever created.”

The BBC has been at the forefront of natural history documentaries since the 1950’s. Each decade the teams from the British unit have traversed the globe with what has always been, for the time, the latest in technology. The images that have been captured have entertained and educated the world for more than half a century. In today’s high- definition world, the BBC has not failed to impress

Supernatural: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on June 14th, 2010

If you are a fan of the original Kolchak: The Night Stalker, you were more than likely disappointed in the remake a couple of years ago on ABC. Your hope is now once again restored. Supernatural is the closest thing I’ve ever seen to the Night Stalker. Like Kolchak, the Winchester brothers are faced with weekly incarnations of evil. They’re forced to research these legends and figure out a way to stop them. As Kolchak discovered, it’s a thankless job. Sure, Supernatural is populated with all sorts of beasties and nasties, but it also manages to hold on to a sense of humor

    Power Kids (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on June 14th, 2010

I’d like to think that the concepts of what makes a good children’s movie is somewhat international. While cultures may vary, kids all over the world are pretty much the same. They look for the same kinds of characteristics in their heroes. While the martial arts film is somewhat cultural, there have been more than enough child-friendly martial arts films for me to conclude that these kinds of acrobatics and old fashioned good kicking-evil’s-butt themes work for kids of any nationality. The recent Jackie Chan The Spy Next Door outing is one good example of the genre-crossing martial arts children’s movie.

    When in Rome (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on June 11th, 2010

My relationship with romantic comedies has not been one of wedded bliss. More often than not, it is something I get forced into. Once you are forced into something, then you automatically have a pre-disposed attitude against the movie. Hence, I haven’t liked too many of these things. Thankfully in the last few years, if I see a romantic comedy it’s been mostly because it ends up in my review queue. This in turn has given me a softer approach to these movies but don’t think I’m going all sentimental just yet.

Ice Road Truckers: The Complete Season 3 (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on June 11th, 2010

“At the top of the world, there’s a job only a few would dare. Last season the dash for the cash was fought on the smooth playing field of Canada’s Arctic ice. This season, two old pros join four of America’s bravest truckers to tackle the continent’s deadliest ice passage. Just when you thought extreme trucking couldn’t get more dangerous, Ice Road Truckers takes on Alaska.”

It was the peak of the 1970’s and CW McCall was teaching ordinary people like us about Cabover Petes with reefers on and getting by those smokeys.

    Alice in Wonderland (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on June 7th, 2010

“I try to believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast. Count them, Alice. One, there are drinks that make you shrink. Two, there are foods that make you grow. Three, animals can talk. Four, cats can disappear. Five, there is a place called Underland. Six, I can slay the Jabberwocky.”

To be perfectly honest with you, I have never read either of the two Lewis Carroll books on which this film has been based. Under ordinary circumstances, that would put me at a decided disadvantage

    Invictus (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 25th, 2010

“On Robben Island, in Pollsmoor Prison, all of my jailers were Afrikaners. For 27 years I studied them. I learned their language. Read their books, their poetry. I had to know my enemy before I could prevail against them. And we did prevail, did we not?”

Leave it to Clint Eastwood to make even rugby look interesting. Of course, Eastwood himself would correct me and observe that Invictus isn’t really about rugby. As the words of Nelson Mandela above suggest, this movie wasn’t really about rugby at all.

    High Anxiety (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 24th, 2010

Mel Brooks has often been called the Master of Comedy. The moniker might be a bit too grandiose, but he was certainly the master of the parody. In recent years that has become more evident than ever. Too often I’ve been forced to sit through something called a comedy. Not only can I do so without ever actually laughing, but there are far too many titles of late that don’t even give me the chance to crack a smile. It’s not that I’ve seen so much that it’s hard to find anything original. I can still laugh like crazy when I watch a Sanford and Son episode I’ve seen at least 50 times or an Abbott & Costello routine

    The Edge (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 20th, 2010

“We’re all put to the test. But, it never comes in the form, or at the point, we would prefer, does it?”

When The Edge made its debut in September of 1997, you would have thought it had a lot going for it. The idea of putting Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins together in a winter wilderness sounds like a pretty good idea. Audiences didn’t seem to think so. The film was gone after just 5 weeks and less than $30 million box office receipts. It lost nearly half of its screens in just 2 weeks. So, what went wrong with this movie? The answer is nothing, and everything.

    The Spy Next Door (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 19th, 2010

“It doesn’t look like they have chicken tenders here.”

How can you not like Jackie Chan? If there has been a more versatile action or martial arts star, I haven’t heard from him. The man made a name for himself in China’s film industry as a remarkable martial arts performer. For decades he’s been the closest thing the film industry has seen to Bruce Lee. But, unlike Lee, Chan wasn’t content with being the best in a single genre. When he finally came to Hollywood, he decided it was a good idea to work a bit more lightheartedness into his films,

History of the World Part 1 (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 19th, 2010

“Even in the most primitive man, the need to create was part of his nature. This need, this talent, clearly separated early man from animals who would never know this gift. And here, in a cave somewhere in the North American Continent, about two million years ago, the first artist was born. And, of course, with the birth of the artist came the inevitable afterbirth … the critic.”

That’s me. Afterbirth here. Brooks always did love to poke fun at the critics. And why not? Unfortunately, this was not one of his better films and likely received a lot of poking from the brethren.

“You, sir, are guilty of disseminating disbelief. Killing dreams. Committing first-degree murder of fantasy, which by Fairy Law, in order to pay your debt to humanity, you are hereby ordered to serve time as a Tooth Fairy. The normal sentence is one week, but because you have the nerve, the unmitigated gall, to actually call yourself a Tooth Fairy, thus making a mockery of everything we stand for, I’m sentencing you to two weeks Tooth Fairy duty.”

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 18th, 2010

    “The Legend Had It Coming.”

It seems that pretty much every decade has had its screen version of Robin Hood; sometimes it’s on television. Robin Hood is one of the most popular characters in film, and there have been plenty of versions, each with their own particular take on the multiple legends that have made up the character over the centuries. Currently Ridley Scott has just released his own epic version of the tale with perfectly-cast Russell Crowe in the title role.
