Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on August 28th, 2012

“They should ban Halloween in this town.”

By the time we got to the 5th installment of the Halloween film franchise, there might have been fans thinking it might be time to ban its sequels. Even the return of young Danielle Harris and Donald Pleasence couldn’t save this train wreck of a movie. It ranks as the worst of all 10 Halloween films at the box office and has been conveniently forgotten by the fans of the franchise.

    One in the Chamber (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on August 16th, 2012

“I play chess in the park every Tuesday, Thursday afternoon. I restore cars from the ’70s, pinball machines from the ’90s, and if you pay me enough, I’ll probably kill anything that breathes.”

Pop quiz! There’s a new straight-to-DVD action flick about two highly-skilled assassins wreaking havoc in Eastern Europe: can you guess the two actors who star in this movie? If you’re an action film — or a straight-to-DVD — connoisseur, Dolph Lundgren would easily be on your Top 10 list of suspects. (Maybe even Top 2.) But how long would it take for you to get to Cuba Gooding Jr? 50 guesses? 200?

    Dexter: The Sixth Season (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on August 14th, 2012

“Rituals are important. Not just for a serial killer.”

One of my favorite rituals happens about this time every year. That’s when Paramount releases the latest season of Dexter on Blu-ray and DVD. I don’t get Showtime, so it’s the only chance I get to get caught up with everyone’s favorite serial killer. Dexter’s back for more bloody murder and mayhem, and his world is just as dark and creepy as ever.

    On the Inside (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on July 30th, 2012

Most people who read my reviews can realize that me and prison films just do not mix. Far too many of them are incredibly hokey and if I hear one more cliché about dropping the soap, I swear I might just go watch about a 12 hour Golden Girls marathon. However, our film today deals with a psychiatric hospital for criminals. It sounds a lot like a prison to me, but perhaps today’s review will take on a much gentler tone and provide us with something just a little different.

    Hijacked (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on July 25th, 2012

I knew this movie was in big trouble as soon as it decided to kill off its most charismatic character/actor in the first 10 minutes. Don’t worry, MMA fans: the poor soul who prematurely bites the dust is not played by UFC legend Randy Couture, who headlines this straight-to-DVD airplane “thriller” that makes you appreciate all the skill and care devoted to making even enjoyably junky action flicks like Passenger 57.

Mac & Devin Go to High School (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on June 30th, 2012

“Now, if you’re unfortunate right now and don’t have any weed, I’m sorry. But please stop this movie right now — it just won’t work if you can’t watch this without no weed.”

Did I mention that this disclaimer at the start of Mac & Devin Go to High School comes from a profane talking joint named Slow Burn (voiced by rapper Mystikal)? Anyway, I can’t say I wasn’t warned.

    Seeking Justice (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on June 20th, 2012

When I saw that Nicolas Cage and January Jones were headlining a little-seen/straight-to-DVD-caliber title, part of me was perversely excited. This had the potential to be a historic summit of bad acting! To be fair,  I generally enjoy the — shall we say — avant garde stylings of Cage’s performances, but I’m much less impressed by the relentless joylessness Jones bring to her work (even on the excellent Mad Men). In short, I was prepared to laugh and I was prepared to wince. However, I was not prepared to enjoy this entertaining, preposterous thriller as much as I did.

    Hondo (Blu Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by William O'Donnell on June 18th, 2012

There are countless John Wayne Westerns in existence, but a hearty handful stand out above the rest. Hondo is a part of said handful. The story is a somewhat familiar one; that of a lone gunman seeking redemption by helping out a young woman fight off Indians…it just howls “John Wayne Western.” That being said, there are some standout performances and the portrayal of Native Americans is tad more progressive than what was within Westerns of the previous decade.

    Workaholics: Seasons 1 & 2 (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by M. W. Phillips on June 11th, 2012

“Ugh. How many times do I have to explain this to you? If you see the neighbor’s house getting broken into, it’s probably Karl high out of his mind thinking he’s locked out of our house.”

When it comes to office based slacker comedies, Mike Judge’s Office Space still sets the gold standard. Workaholics wishes it could be as quotable and timeless as Office Space, but settles for goofy, instantly forgettable juvenile ramblings suitable for a stoner’s short term memory. Much like the boy’s prank of choice, involving a dollar bill wrapped around poop, Workaholics looks good on the surface, but is pretty much the same old crap underneath.

    Tosh.O – Hoodies (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by William O'Donnell on June 5th, 2012

YouTube had all but killed off the idea of mailing silly home videos to the likes of America’s Funniest Home Videos. These days, people prefer to stream dozens of videos on their computers and save themselves from the watered down jokes of Bob Saget or current host Tom Bergeron. Tosh.O takes a similar format of displaying such silly videos, but focuses on things that have gone “viral” online. Like AFHV, Tosh.O adds their own commentary and sketches to the presentation but in a much more crass, cable-savvy manner.

    Beyond (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 31st, 2012

At first glance it would be very easy to say that Beyond doesn’t really offer us anything terribly new in the crime drama genre. For the most part I would tend to agree with that criticism. I would counter with the argument that a very good film doesn’t need to be very original to be good. Sometimes the value in a movie lies in the fact that it does what it does do extremely well. That’s how I would describe the sleeper direct-to-video release Beyond.

    Mother’s Day (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by M. W. Phillips on May 10th, 2012

“If my family can’t live in this house, you sure as hell can’t either!”

Daniel (Frank Grillo) and Beth (Jaime King) Sohapi picked up a great deal on a recently foreclosed house, and they’ve invited a handful of friends over to celebrate. A tornado threatens the area, but everyone is partying in the basement, which has been recently reinforced as a tornado shelter. Things look great in suburbia until three frantic and deadly bank robbers, Ike (Patrick Flueger), Addley (Warren Kole), and Johnny (Matt O’Leary), return to their childhood home following a botched bank robbery.

    The Wicker Tree (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by M. W. Phillips on April 23rd, 2012

“Here in Tresock, I believe the old religion of the Celts fits our needs at this time. Isn’t that all you can ask of a religion?”

In 1973 Director Robin Hardy captured lightning in a bottle with the classic The Wicker Man. Based on David Pinner’s 1967 novel Ritual and loosely adapted into Anthony Shaffer’s sharp screenplay. Shaffer painstakingly researched paganism giving the film an undeniable authenticity, The Wicker Man became a genre of its own known as Folk Horror. The beauty of the film was the war of counter-religions, Christianity vs. Celtic Paganism.

    Camel Spiders (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on April 13th, 2012

Most of us first heard about camel spiders in the early 1990′s during the first Gulf War. Apparently, these 6-inch bugs were causing quite a stir with the troops and were responsible for as many horror stories as the war itself. We were told they were instantly deadly and could grow to enormous sizes in a matter of days. Rumors had it that the creatures were killing machines that roamed the Middle Eastern deserts feeding off camels of all things. Or humans if they got in the way.

    Chinatown (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by David Annandale on April 6th, 2012

Roman Polanski’s seminal neo-noir finally makes it to Blu-ray. Gino has already handled the previous DVD release, so I’m going to turn the reins over to him for a while, then jump back in.

“Jake Gittes is a Chandler style detective with all of the trappings. From the office to the secretary and the cop friend, Gittes is a cliché. He appears to specialize in tracking down extramarital affairs. When he’s hired to keep an eye on a rich millionaire, the subject turns up dead, and maybe it wasn’t his wife at all who hired him. Gittes now must investigate to save his own hide. His investigation leads him to a corrupt water department taking advantage of a manufactured drought. His client has a dark secret that only complicates Gittes’ efforts.

South Park: The Complete Fifteenth Season (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on April 3rd, 2012

If you haven’t heard of South Park by now there is certainly something wrong with you. You’re just not paying attention. More important, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do. The show is entering its 16th season on Comedy Central, and Paramount is now giving us the 15th season on high definition Blu-ray. And, if you are just hearing about South Park for the first time, what a wonderful journey you have ahead of you. You might need an airline sickness bag on occasion, but you are in for a solid treat.

The Son of No One (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on February 24th, 2012

After watching The Son of No One, I’m afraid I have some good news and (significantly more) bad news. The good news is that I get to say the following sentence for the first time in at least ten years: Al Pacino was probably the best thing in this movie. The bad news is Pacino has only a relatively tiny role in this dramatically stagnant crime drama that ends up squandering a talented cast, a vividly-realized setting and some interesting ideas.

    The Dead (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on February 16th, 2012

Despite their pop culture ubiquity these days, zombies are getting somewhat of a raw deal. To be clear, I’m talking about the old-school, George Romero-style creatures that slowly lumbered toward their victims and whose only ambition in life was to snack on human flesh. Nowadays, a lot of filmmakers seem to be more interested in making zombie movies that don’t technically have “zombies” in them (“infected” is a popular alternative term) and who are almost fast

    Redline (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on January 11th, 2012

To say I am not a big fan of racing is something of an understatement. I never find myself watching the races, Nascar or Indy and could really care less about the sport where you turn left a whole lot. When it comes to cartoons or video games, it is a somewhat different tale since I have enjoyed the show Wacky Races as well as loved to play anything in the Burnout series of video games. So when it came to reviewing the anime film, Redline, I was not sure exactly what to think but looked forward to the review.

First Squad: The Moment of Truth (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on January 9th, 2012

My mother was born in Poland thus making me 50% full Polish. Growing up, I was often told stories about the Second World War and how my grandfather primarily was affected by it. So much so, that he never really spoke of it (I got my stories second hand through my grandmother and mother) most likely due to the horrors endured to the Polish invasion and other unspeakable depictions of violence. Today’s review takes us to an interesting Anime that is set in Russia during the same war with a supernatural feel.

Kung Fu Panda 2 / Secrets of the Masters (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 14th, 2011

“Long ago in ancient China, the peacocks ruled over Gongmen City. They brought great joy and prosperity to the city, for they had invented fireworks. But their son, Lord Shen, saw darker power in the fireworks. What had brought color and joy could also bring darkness and destruction. Shen’s troubled parents consulted a soothsayer. She foretold that if he continued down this dark path, he would be defeated by a warrior of black and white.”

We all know who that warrior is, don’t we?

    Tanner Hall (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on December 10th, 2011

As one could probably surmise from reading many of my reviews, I don’t know a thing about women. I am after all a man, that is really the only reason I need. But then again, we are slow witted creatures. But I do know I like watching women (that does not sound too perverted does it?). So perhaps when I saw a list of titles to review, I gravitated towards one called Tanner Hall which follows the story of four teenage girls becoming women. I probably still will not learn a thing.

    5 Days of War (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on December 5th, 2011

As some might be able to figure out from my personality, I tend to stay away from political and war type movies. Political movies (except for the special ones) tend to confuse the viewer until the final curtain is drawn. War movies on the other hand tend to be more about explosions and male bonding which is usually enough to put me to sleep. What happens when you combine the two of them? Well then you might get a movie like 5 Days of War directed by the one and only Renny Harlin .

    Carjacked (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 1st, 2011

John Bonito has had very little experience in filmmaking. He’s done a few wrestling tidbits and one earlier film called The Marine, and that was nearly six years ago. Chances are you haven’t heard of either. If Carjack is any indication of his limited ability, the new film out on Blu-ray isn’t going to help with that name recognition. So, with a no-name director and a direct-to-video release, the film really left small expectations. We might go into a film like this expecting a rather dull, “been there, done that” feel to it. In that sense Bonito doesn’t disappoint at all. But take a closer look at the cast and hope emerges for something perhaps a little better than that.

    Father of Invention (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on November 9th, 2011

All things are intrinsically connected, no matter how different they may appear. Hi. You know me — Robert Axle. As a fabricator, I bring existing, often different, items together, maximizing their atomic and molecular potential. Making ordinary inventions infinitely more prolific.”

Kevin Spacey has been quite prolific himself in the last couple of years. It seems no matter where I go these days, I see him in another movie I’m reviewing. In just the last 6 months I’ve seen him in Horrible Bosses, Margin Call, Casino Jack and now Father Of Invention.
