    Planet Hulk (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on February 3rd, 2010

Planet Hulk started out as a storyline from Incredible Hulk #88-#95 (2006). The Hulk was too strong for the planet Earth and so the Illuminati under the direction of Iron Man and Doctor Strange sent him to a planet where he can cause harm to nobody except himself. Of course, things don’t go exactly as the Illuminati probably hoped for. The direct to video movie deals with Hulk’s stay on planet known as Sakaar.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on February 3rd, 2010

I grew up on the Peanuts creations of Charles M. Schulz. Most of us have, in one way or another. His newspaper comic strip is one of the longest running and most successful strips of all time. The work has been translated into every language currently spoken on the planet. The images of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, and the rest of the Peanuts gang have appeared on just about any kind of product imaginable. Our pop culture contains too many references to the strip to mention briefly. For me, it was the television specials starting in the mid 1960’s that brought the gang into my life. The classics are running annually, still after nearly 50 years

Mighty Mouse — The New Adventures

Posted in Disc Reviews by David Annandale on February 1st, 2010

Before SpongeBob SquarePants, before The Family Guy, before South Park, before even The Simpsons, there was Mighty Mouse. This revival of the Terrytoons character was a short-lived, but creatively vital series that ran in 1987-88. It wasn’t an adult show, like many of its spiritual successors would be, but it was something that hadn’t been seen in the world of television animation in a long, long time: it was witty, smart, and expected its audience to be smart, too (and that includes smart kids, at whom the series was ostensibly aimed).

Iron Man: Armored Adventures Volume 2

Posted in Disc Reviews by William O'Donnell on January 24th, 2010

Nestled nicely between the appearance of two blockbuster, live-action films, Iron Man was been made into another half-hour animated show. In the past we have seen the origin and tales of the Stan Lee created Tony Stark and his amazing technology be altered in a 90s cartoon show, the Jon Favreau film(s), and a recent animated film, but the developers of these latest “adventures” take the furthest and riskiest leap from the original source material by making Stark a teenager, along with most all of his friends, and some enemies as best friends Rhodey, Pepper and arch enemy the Mandarin (!!!) are converted to high school chums.

The Simpsons: The Complete Twentieth Season (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on January 19th, 2010

It’s about time that The Simpsons has made it to Blu-ray and high definition. There’s plenty of room on the couch as we welcome Homer, Bart, Marge, Maggie, and the whole town of Springfield to the brighter, more detailed world of high definition. You might be asking yourself: Why should we spend extra bucks to watch a simple cartoon on Blu-ray? That’s a good question. The simple answer is that you just should. The longer answer follows.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on January 13th, 2010

“Have you ever felt like you were a little bit different. Like you had something unique to offer to the world, if only you could just get people to see it? Then you know exactly how it felt to be me.”

The title is taken from a very short children’s book written by Judi and Ron Barrett. I say the title and not the story because this movie takes only the most basic concept from the book to create the movie. Most of the characters are brand new creations, and the plot of the entire film deals with events not covered in the book.

Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on January 13th, 2010

“… It is a dark time for the rebellion. Although the Death Star has been destroyed, Imperial troops have driven the rebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them across the Galaxy. But, you know this story…”

Know this story, you do. It’s the opening of the second, or actually the 5th in sequence, but it is the second one made, unless you count… Never mind. This is the prologue to The Empire Strikes Back, more commonly referred to the 2 hour trailer for Return Of The Jedi. Not so long ago in this Galaxy, Family Guy took a shot across the bow of those Imperial Cruisers with its extremely funny and on the spot spoof of the first Star Wars film

Winnie the Pooh: A Valentine for You Special Edition

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on January 12th, 2010

“Now this might be the room of any small boy, but it happens to belong to a boy named Christopher Robin, and like most small boys, Christopher Robin had toy animals to play with. And together they had many remarkable adventures in an enchanted place called The Hundred Acre Wood. But out of all of his animal friends, Christopher Robin’s very best friend was a bear called Winnie The Pooh.”

“Oh Bother”A.A. Milne was quite an eclectic writer. He wrote murder mysteries that even appeared on Alfred Hitchcock Presents. From that fertile mind would also come a place known as the Hundred Acre Wood.

Handy Manny: Handy Manny’s Motorcycle Adventure

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 9th, 2009

This must be tool month at Disney. I ended up watching two of the specials that were released on the first, and both have tools as a central theme. This one is apparently about tools all of the time. Handy Manny is a Spanish handyman who has a living collection of tools in his box. They all talk. The Phillips and straight edge screwdrivers bicker. There’s a tape measure named Stretch, a wrench named Rusty, and a pair of pliers named Squeeze, to name a few. Together with Manny’s expertise, they can tackle any repair or building job.

    Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Choo-Choo Express

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 9th, 2009

Anyone who has come here long enough to get to know my likes and dislikes probably knows what a Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse fan I am. The man and the character opened the road for so much of what we have today, from Pixar to Tom and Jerry. But, if you’re looking for the kind of cartoons you and I have grown to expect, this one is bound to disappoint you. It’s an episode of the current television series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. It’s an animated Sesame Street, however, and not really a cartoon adventure.

Holiday Spotlight: Gotta Catch Santa Claus

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 8th, 2009

“Hello, there. I bet you’re already saying to yourself, ‘Oh, I’ve already seen this one. Another holiday special narrated by some new teen star between takes on their oh-so-popular new sitcom series. Well, I’m here to tell you, not this time, because I’m not a star. Well, not yet at least. And, this ain’t about how so and so saved Christmas for all the good boys and girls…”

I would have loved to have been in this meeting. Someone walks into a studio executive’s office to pitch his idea.

Holiday Spotlight Selection: Peanuts: I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 7th, 2009

We all know what a classic A Charlie Brown Christmas still is. It’s a fact of life that when you have a hit there is a tendency to continue to reach for that lightning in a bottle over and over again. That is certainly the case with the Peanuts specials. The results have been mixed, and while I won’t say that these recent specials aren’t quality stuff, I doubt there is anyone out there who believes that the same quality of heart and charm has existed in the series since the 1970’s. When Charles Schulz died, it was agreed that no new material was to be allowed with these characters

    A Miser Brothers’ Christmas

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 7th, 2009

“Have you ever been told of that fateful year when Christmas almost didn’t happen? It was everyone’s worst fear. There was no one to take Santa’s big sack of toys and deliver the presents to the world’s good girls and boys. But this Christmas season didn’t begin with any trouble or fuss. It began with some singing, as all Christmases must.”

The 1960’s and 1970’s saw an entire genre of holiday specials produced by the prolific studio of Rankin and Bass.

    Holiday Spotlight: Santa Buddies (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 3rd, 2009

Just in time for the holidays, the Buddies are back for more cute puppy action. All of the retriever Buddies are back for this one. You are introduced to the “Buddies” right at the start, so it doesn’t really matter if you saw any of their other films. There’s Bud-Ha (Cate), a wise meditational pup. Next up is Mud-Bud (Panitz), an always dirty pup with a fondness for rolling in the dirt. The female Buddy is Rose-Bud (Mumy), who is the girly part of the team all decked out in a bow. Bud-Derball (Flitter) is the normal one of the bunch, followed by the rappin’ pup, B-Dawg (Gisondo).

    Spongebob’s Truth or Square

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on December 3rd, 2009

Spongebob Squarepants is such the cultural phenomenon that anytime an anniversary or a full length motion picture comes into production, the show can usually get a slew of good actors and sports stars to do a cameo. For Spongebob’s tenth anniversary and third tv movie of the series: he decided to bring out a slew of guest stars. The only question that remained was the hour long episode any good or was it the show’s version of week old bread with those really crusty parts?

Holiday Spotlight Selection: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 1st, 2009

I went to my player, the one that’s on top. I turned on the TV I bought at the shop. Then I opened my Blu-ray, took it right from its case, and then there on the tray I put it in place. I pushed one or two buttons to bring it up fast. Soon an FBI warning, then my feature at last. I sat the whole time crouched alone in my chair, watching fanciful images that came to me there. I was certain at once that I’d seen this before, but something was different; it was brighter, I’m sure. The Grinch was the same, he hadn’t changed, not a bit. But the image was clearer now, I had to admit.

Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 1st, 2009

The House Of Mouse first appeared on television in January of 2001. It took advantage of pretty much every Disney character from nearly every Disney property. Mickey was the host of a nightclub called The House Of Mouse, I guess a riff on The House Of Blues. The standard bearing characters ran the club. In the audience was where you’ll find all of those lovable characters from films like The Lion King, Aladdin, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Winnie The Pooh, and so many more.

    Horton Hears a Who! (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on November 30th, 2009

“On the 15th of May, in the jungle of Nool, in the heat of the day, in the cool of the pool. He was splashing enjoying the jungle’s great joys, when Horton, the Elephant, heard a small noise. Then he heard it again, just a very faint yelp, as if some tiny person were calling for help…”

If you’re like me, you remember the Dr. Seuss specials from the 1960’s. At this time of the year, The Grinch comes first to mind. In that wonderful span of cartoon specials was the story of the elephant Horton, who hears voices coming from a speck he carries around on a flower.

Superman: The Complete Animated Series (7-Disc Collector’s Edition)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on November 27th, 2009

Superman: The Animated Series was made in the same fashion as Batman: The Animated Series. The tone was a little more serious and a lot more action. It was first produced in 1996 and made 54 episodes through the year 2000. The show received high praise for raising the bar but at the same time keeping what was important to the mythos of Superman. In fact, it even received a nomination for an Emmy. Besides Smallville, this probably stands out as the best television adaption of the one known as Superman, the Last Son of Krypton and hero to the planet Earth (and beyond).

    Up (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on November 4th, 2009

It sure seems like Pixar has a lock on the computer animated film industry these days. Their films appear to always hit just the right amount of adult and children content to win with both audiences. We may not all be laughing at the same jokes, but we do laugh. When we’re not laughing, we appear to be captivated by endearing characters that immediately feel like we’ve known them our whole lives. We are instantly concerned about the things that happen to them. All of this happens without a single live entertainer on the screen to guide us into these emotions. That’s because Pixar also happens to be the most state of the art studio out there churning out these kinds of films.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on November 3rd, 2009

I’ve often spent a lot of time talking about how Pixar has dominated the computer animation, at least as far as full length features go. With few exceptions there isn’t anything out there that even comes close. Most films rely on toilet humor and crude innuendo to get a few laughs. A lot of the kids and adults might suck that stuff up, but they can’t hold a candle to Pixar. There are, as I’ve mentioned, some quite notable exceptions. The Fox Blue Sky Studios has had enormous success with their Ice Age films. And when you take a look at the third and latest entry in that franchise, you’ll understand why.

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (Blu-ray)

“A changing of the seasons brings wonder to the world. For ages has the magic of the fairies been unfurled. But nature’s greatest changes come beneath the Autumn sky and mysteries reveal themselves as harvest time draws nigh. This year a shimmering blue moon will rise before the frost. Perhaps its rays can light the way to find what has been lost.”

After giving us Tinker Bell’s origin story in the first film of this franchise, we get a chance to look even more deeply into this wonderland of fairies and magic. Ever wonder where that magical pixie dust comes from that allows fairies to fly?

    Chop Socky Chooks, Vol. 1

If you were to take the movie Kill Bill, mix it with the Karate Kid, and then put it into animation form, the end result would be Chop Socky Chooks.

Featuring 13 of the most wackiest adventures and martial arts mayhem that one has ever seen, volume one of Chop Socky Chooks shows three chickens Chick P, KO Joe and Chuckie Chan “battling virtual villains, karaoke crazies, rogue robots, prehistoric predators and even fast-food fiends” all in hopes to save Wasabi World from the powers that be.
