Kung Fu Panda 2 / Secrets of the Masters (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 14th, 2011

“Long ago in ancient China, the peacocks ruled over Gongmen City. They brought great joy and prosperity to the city, for they had invented fireworks. But their son, Lord Shen, saw darker power in the fireworks. What had brought color and joy could also bring darkness and destruction. Shen’s troubled parents consulted a soothsayer. She foretold that if he continued down this dark path, he would be defeated by a warrior of black and white.”

We all know who that warrior is, don’t we?

Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World (3D Blu-ray / Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 1st, 2011

    “You have been activated.”

You’ve got to hand it to Robert Rodriguez. Since he came onto the film scene in 1992 he has earned a reputation for delivering some very innovative films. His specialty appears to run toward more adult fare with such cult hits as Dusk To Dawn, Sin City, and his recent splashes into grindhouse territory. Anyone who has seen those films might find it strange that the writer/director is also responsible for a somewhat beloved children’s franchise with the Spy Kids films.

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas Special Edition (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on November 30th, 2011

The Disney magic faded for a little while during the 1980s. There were still animated features, but they weren’t the groundbreaking triumphs of the studio’s golden age. All of that changed as we entered the 1990s. The Little Mermaid is considered the first of the new wave of Disney classics. It certainly signaled a change in the direction of animation at Disney. While the change may have begun there, I believe it was Beauty And The Beast that started a wave

West Side Story: 50th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by M. W. Phillips on November 22nd, 2011

“When you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way! From your first cigarette to your last dyin’ days.”

West Side Story is a masterpiece in film making. Its DNA comes from the greatest entertainers in the business. The great Robert Wise (The Sound of Music, The Day the Earth Stood Still) shares directing credit with one of the world’s greatest choreographers, Jerome Robbins. The music was composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Daniel Fapp’s cinematography is epic and evocative. The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10, a record at the time, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Captain America: The First Avenger (Blu-ray)(3D)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on October 28th, 2011

In the world of Marvel comics Captain America was indeed the first Avenger, and as the full title implies we’re going quite a way into the past to create this hero. But the first shall be last, and it’s certainly true on this long road to the May 2012 release of The Avengers on film. You see, this is the final piece to the puzzle for that great assembly of heroes. We’ve had two chances to witness both The Hulk and Iron Man and a recent film introduction to Thor. Other characters like Black Widow and Hawk Eye came as guests on the other films. But the introductions are now complete.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on October 28th, 2011

“That be the cold hand of fate I feel down my nape.”

With each of the previous Pirates Of Caribbean films pulling in over a billion dollars in total revenue, it was indeed the cold hand of fate that determined the franchise would not end. Like Captain Jack Sparrow himself, this franchise isn’t going to be easy to kill. It’s true that the last two films, the third in particular, were rather universally scorned by the critics. But they still pulled in a boatload of money

    Winnie the Pooh (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on October 26th, 2011

“Now this might be the room of any small boy, but it happens to belong to a boy named Christopher Robin, and like most small boys, Christopher Robin had toy animals to play with. And together they had many remarkable adventures in an enchanted place called The Hundred Acre Wood. But out of all of his animal friends, Christopher Robin’s very best friend was a bear called Winnie The Pooh.”

“Oh Bother”A.A. Milne was quite an eclectic writer. He wrote murder mysteries that even appeared on Alfred Hitchcock Presents. From that fertile mind would also come a place known as the Hundred Acre Wood.

The Lion King (Two-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on October 12th, 2011

“From the day we arrive on the planet and blinking, step into the sun, there’s more to see than can ever be seen. More to do than can ever be done. There’s far too much to take in here. More to find than can ever be found…”

There’s a period in the 1990′s that has often been referred to as the second golden age of Disney animation. The studio had fallen from its once mighty perch, and most film historians tend to agree there was a creative dark ages through the 1980′s. But the renaissance of the studio began with Aladdin in 1992

    Fast Five (Blu-ray)

The action thriller Fast Five with its hot rod theme leaves the past four episodes of Fast & Furious in the dust.  Now on Blu-ray the high-on-energy, exhilarating plot and amazing chase scenes make this a must-see adrenaline pumper. Within the opening 20 minutes it gets so wild it took my breath away.

    Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Posted in Disc Reviews by David Annandale on September 27th, 2011

In the wake of the financially successful but critically drubbed Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Michael Bay and company return to the fray with this considerably more coherent exercise. Given that this movie committed to advancing the cause of 3D like no other film since Avatar, the question arises as to how well its visual splendour and over-the-top technological extravagance will translate to home video. The answer is: pretty damn well.

    Dumbo (Two-Disc 70th Anniversary Edition) (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on September 26th, 2011

“Through the snow, and sleet, and hail / Through the blizzard, through the gale / Through the wind and through the rain / Over mountain, over plain / Through the blinding lightning flash / And the mighty thunder crash / Ever faithful, ever true / Nothing stops him, he’ll get through.”

When Walt Disney’s big gamble with Snow White paid off an entire studio was created and financed. The man and his merry little band were on top of the world. But then Walt decided to try and sophisticate his audience somewhat, and the result was box office disaster.

    Bridesmaids (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by M. W. Phillips on September 20th, 2011

“You’re like the maid of dishonor.”

Bridesmaids, from director Paul Feig, producer Judd Apatow and based on a script by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, became the highest grossing R-rated female comedy of all time, edging out Sex and the City. Although coined by many as the female version of The Hangover, and there are certainly similarities, this does the movie a certain injustice. Where The Hangover is funny in a mean-spirited, rude-boy way, Bridesmaids taps into Apatow’s gift for producing comedies with human characters

    Thor (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on September 15th, 2011

“Once, mankind accepted a simple truth: that they were not alone in this universe. Some worlds man believed home to their Gods. Others they knew to fear.”

Marvel has rolled out some rather ambitious plans for the next two years. Of course, it has all been leading to the huge Avengers film coming summer of 2012. If you’ve been watching the scenes after the credits of both Iron Man films, you’ve already seen the groundwork has been laid. Now comes Thor, and we’re talking more than just groundwork here. This is the first in a series of films that lead directly to The Avengers.

    Something Borrowed (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by M. W. Phillips on August 21st, 2011

“The Hamptons are like a zombie movie directed by Ralph Lauren.”

Although I prefer genre films, chick flicks can prove a guilty pleasure. I can get in touch enough with my feminine side to shed a tear at a powerful love story, laugh at romantic misadventures, and embrace the belief in soul mates. So I slipped on my pink silk pajamas, grabbed a box of tissues, curled up on my chaise lounge and approached Something Borrowed with an open mind. OK,

    Mars Needs Moms (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on August 19th, 2011

“Who knew mothering was so hard?”

If you thought that mothering was hard, you should see the work and creativity that goes into making a motion-capture computer animation feature. What started with The Polar Express led to a wonderful holiday special in the hands of Walt Disney with last year’s charming A Christmas Carol. Now Disney has taken the magic one step farther with the recent release of Mars Needs Moms.

“Obviously, I miscalculated a few things. Why is it that the moment your life exceeds your wildest dreams the knife appears at your back?”

You’ve heard the myth that we only use about 10% of our brains so often that most people actually believe it’s true. It’s one of those old wives’ tails that has been around long enough to become an axiom. We actually do use considerably more than 10% of our brains, or should I say, most of us do.

    Arthur (2011) (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on August 1st, 2011

Back in 1981 we all got a little lost between the moon and New York City as Dudley Moore played the spoiled and perpetually drunk title character in the surprise hit Arthur. He was in love with Liza Minnelli, but his rich family had plans for the socialite played by Jill Eikenberry. Arthur’s only real friend was the guy who was paid to be there for him, but nevertheless had a soft spot for him. That was butler Hobson, played by Sir John Gielgud. It was a quirky little romantic comedy that turned out to have legs.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on July 17th, 2011

One of my favorite books growing up was Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Clearly. It was a charming book that told the story of a child who would write letters to his favorite author. But somewhere in the middle of the book, it turns from letters to a journal of his life in the second grade. The book series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid focus on the experiences of Greg Heffley and told through the pages of a journal. Today, I get to review the second movie adaptation subtitled: Rodrick Rules.

    Warrior’s Way, The (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on July 14th, 2011

Even though I have found my soulmate, I often consider myself to be a loner at heart. If I was born in another time, perhaps I would be roaming the earth searching for a purpose. In some ways, I could consider myself to be like the lead actor in Warrior’s Way. A warrior who is the best swordsman in the land but empty in his heart. That however would change when one day I found my purpose. Will it change in his?

    The Rite (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 21st, 2011

    “Do you believe in Sin?”

The Exorcist was one of the most chilling films ever made. William Friedkin used subliminal images as well as those quite famous scenes of Linda Blair being taken over by Satan himself. Ever since that time filmmakers have been trying to cash in on the phenomenon. Exorcism movies have become almost a sub-genre in the horror field. There have been everything from no-budget to mega-budget attempts. There have been both sequels and prequels to the original film.

    The Incredibles (Four-Disc Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on April 21st, 2011

I’ve long held the belief that the folks at Pixar are really just children who have refused to grow up. That doesn’t mean that they don’t have to deal with the realities that adulthood thrust upon each of us. I’m sure they have families and are responsible citizens and parents. They consistently make movies, that while there is certainly appeal for children, are obviously intended for adults, adults like them, who have decided to never grow up. If you ever required proof of that concept, The Incredibles should prove the point quite nicely.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on April 20th, 2011

“So far every person I’ve met in this strange place suffers from the most florid delusions, chasing green mists and looking for lost lords. I can only assume that this is the result of poor diet, or they’re all just barking mad.”

C.S. Lewis created an incredibly imaginative world when he wrote his Chronicles Of Narnia. The stories were an escape, of sorts, from a war-torn Europe. They integrated elements of Christianity in an effort to provide a semblance of hope in the form of a children’s fairy tale.

Tron: Legacy / Tron: The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo)(Blu-ray)(Blu-ray 3D)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on April 6th, 2011

If you are old enough to have seen the original Tron back in 1982, you know how much things have changed in the digital world since then. The block graphics of the film and subsequent game might have been state-of-the-art at the time, but it looks like something very primitive to the younger generation. Like all good science fiction, many of the incredible elements of the film have become quite commonplace. The idea that a person can be scanned by a laser and transported into a virtual world
