British Television has always done a good job of showcasing music with variety programs. The Old Grey Whistle Test is probably the best of these and over its 16 year run featured some of the most influential bands in the history of rock and roll. We are treated to 28 live performances by huge bands like U2, REM, The Police, Bob Marley and Bruce Springsteen as well as riveting performances by the likes of The Dammed, Tom Waits and Iggy Pop. This is a great disc for any rock and roll fan especially if you grew up in th...s era.

Ronnie James Dio was at one time the leader singer for Black Sabbath after the departure of Ozzy Osborne. He went on to form his own band and they are still together making albums and touring, this is a show from the Roseland Theater in December of 2002. From a musical standing this is an old school 90’s metal band that are just as much about show as they are about the music, having said that the band is very tight and sounds very good. Musically, well it is up to you to decide if you like it or not but, on a perform...nce level they are very solid.

If you like to nitpick the “that couldn’t happen” stuff in a sci-fi film, this is not the movie for you. The only thing you’ll get out of The Core is a ride. The plot is completely absurd and unlike the very similar Armageddon, this film doesn’t deliver near the action. Special effects range from quite cool to the obvious animations and matte paintings. What impresses me most is that the cast got through this with a straight face. The Core deservedly didn’t perform well at the box office but it is still worth a watch.

Synopsis

Please do not confuse this Hallmark made for TV film with the wonderful Tim Burton film of the same year. They have about as much in common with each other as either does with the classic Washington Irving story. The only good thing I can say about the film is that Brent Carver’s Ichabod Crane is a spectacular performance. Carver reminds me a great deal of the late and great Roddy McDowall. He shares his overall appearance as well as certain characteristic mannerisms and speech inflections with McDowall. The rest of the film is pretty bad. The headless horseman is such a minor character that he doesn’t enter into the story at all until the final six minutes of the film. Instead we are forced to watch a tale dominated by Ichabod’s courting of Kristina. Atmosphere is lacking for the most part. The supporting cast is dominated by fawning females and one- dimensional men.

Synopsis

You can pretty much guess a film’s in trouble when it begins with an ominous narrative that ends with: “The following could be a true story”. Deadly Invasion starts slow and gets dull from there. This was a 1995 TV film about killer bees. Weren’t we over that story in the 1970’s? The plot is predictable at every turn. This might not be all that bad if not for below B grade acting and cinematography. I’m more afraid of having to watch this film again than of killer bees.
