Film

Goldie won the best supporting actress Academy Award as a ditsy, blonde mistress. Not bad for a debut. Goldie starts the film with her suicide attempt foiled by a neighbor (who unknowingly gives a great James Stewart impression). Matthau thinks he has the perfect love scenario. He has a stuffy secretary (Bergman) who keeps his life in order and a fling (Goldie) he keeps in check by telling her about a non-existent wife and kids.

As with all successful romantic comedies, a wrench has...

I doubt the makers of the current Daredevil film took one look at Glory Daze and said, "We've got to have that guy." Glory Daze is a mindless romp through the last weeks of a group of frat-like college students. If you're interested in plots, solid acting, and quality cinematography, this really isn't your film. If, however, a cheap imitation of Animal House sounds like a good way to spend an hour and a half, look no further.

Synopsis

Nick Nolte is a down-on-his-luck actor, who suddenly has to look after his six-year-olddaughter (who naturally winds up with a better TV career than he has). This film was a big flopfor writer/director James L. Brooks. It was originally a musical, but all the songs were cut priorto release.

Audio

The audio specifications aren’t really indicated, which smells like 2.0 to me. Theenvironment effect is all right, though not spectacular, and the left-rig...

Synopsis

An ensemble piece, along the lines of something John Sayles or Robert Altman might do,only on a minuscule budget and played strictly for laughs. A massively dysfunctional Southernfamily meet for the funeral of Grandma Peggy, and all sorts of animosities and such are workedout. The film is based on a play, and boy can you tell -- static as hell, boring to watch. There aresome moments of genuine emotion with the gay characters, but for the most part this is just apainful slog...

Synopsis

Goldie Hawn plays Suzette, aging groupie. Fired from her bartending job, she decamps fromLA for Phoenix, there to track down old pal Vinnie (Susan Sarandon), who has, of course, morphed from party girl to Mrs. Establishment. Along the way, Hawn picks up neurotic writerGeoffrey Rush. (A screwed up writer who is sexually devoured by a hot babe? Could this be thecreation of a male writer?) Hawn proceeds to cure everybody of uptightness. Gosh, aren’t theBoomers fascinating? They...

I wouldn’t say The Last Man was the worst film I ever saw, but that’s only because I did see Battlefield Earth and Event Horizon. If there’s a category below B film this is a great example. The whole film has the feel of community theatre at its worst. Dan Montgomery delivers such a bad performance that it would be funny if it didn’t hurt so much to watch. The story rambles on for 93 minutes that will feel more like 3 hours.

Synopsis

Eccentric millionaire Sellers adopts homeless Ringo Starr. They then travel about, playingnasty tricks on (primarily) the rich. Putting in appearances are John Cleese, Raquel Welch,Christopher Lee, Roman Polanski, Yul Brynner, Richard Attenborough, and so on. Extremelydisjointed, and only sporadically funny (at best).

Audio

Ugh. The case claims this DVD is in 2.0 surround. Bull. This is mono, and the sound qualityis pretty bad: it’s harsh, it’s dist...

Synopsis

Warren Beatty plays George, who is as gifted a hairdresser as he is a ladies’ man. He needsmoney to open his own salon, and is hoping Lester (Jack Warden) will invest. That Beatty issleeping not only with Jill (Goldie Hawn) but with Lester’s wife (Lee Grant), mistress (JulieChristie) and teenage daughter (Carrie Fisher) might just complicate the issue. Especially as moreand more characters find out about each other. Very well made, but also very much a productof its times -...
