What is it about The Roman Empire that fascinates us so? The answer is far too complicated to address in this forum, if you can pardon the pun. The influences of Rome are all around us. From the very form of government we practice to the grand arenas we watch our ballgames in, Rome can be found literally around every corner. Hollywood has recognized the allure since the early days of filmmaking. Classics like Ben Hur and Spartacus eventually gave way to the more modern epic Gladiator.

It is 52 BC and...Rome stands at a crossroads. Long ago established as a great Republic to rival the likes of Greece, the fledgling empire suffers from within. Senators appear to the common man as merely wealthy aristocrats who have long since lost any connection to the problems of everyday Roman life. Sound familiar? Gaius Julius Caesar (Hinds) controls an elite legion of Roman soldiers fighting for the glory of Rome in Gaul. His co-consul in Rome, Pompeius Magnus (Cranham) has grown impatient with Caesar’s many years of absence from Rome. The resulting civil war would eventually lead to collapse of a Republic and the beginning of dictatorship and empire that would drive Rome for centuries hence.

Synopsis

Maybe it’s because of their funny accents, or maybe it’s because of the natural desire to see ancient history relived, but the British sure have a knack for their period piece dramas and making everyone want to watch. And when Elizabeth I aired on HBO over a two-part miniseries during the spring of 2006, it won a truckload of Emmy awards, not only for the production, but also for the title character, played by Helen Mirren (Excalibur) and one of the supporting actors (Jeremy Irons, <b ...Reversal of Fortune).

Tristram Shandy is the oddest and most entertaining sort of film. It is a film about the making of the film that you are watching, hosted by the fictional main character. It is sort-of like American Splendor, and sort-of like Spinal Tap. The film is the story of the life of Tristram Shandy, an 18th century Englishman of particularly stately means. The man's life is of note and worthy of such a film because... well, now that I think of it... I don't really know. You see, there are so many interruptions and different takes during the film that the actors are trying to make, that the viewer never really learns anything. Herein lies the genius of the piece. For all of the efforts the cast makes to tell the story, they never really tell us anything at all. Instead, the film is full of false starts, tales told out of order, and tons of disturbingly enjoyable comedy.

When reviewers talk about the desire to find new and interesting films, this is just the kind of thing they are talking about. This is a film that defies explanation, except to say that it is very, very funny. It is a fictional documentary about the filming of an unfilmable book. That in and of itself should sell you on picking up this disc.

There is a little more Tracey to go around with Tracey Takes On: The Complete Second Season, so fans of the show shouldn't be disappointed. However, I find her humor quaint and dry in an inescapably British way. No one can deny her talent. But it's hard to like a show when none of the laughs are connecting. Of course, humor - like beauty - is certainly in the eye of the beholder. With that said, I am not one of the lucky ones that can look at this raw oyster of a show and see the pearl. This season, Ullman inc...udes many of the same faces from season one. The humor also continues in the same light with its often irreverent pokes at social norms and behavior. There are a variety of guest stars accompanying Ullman, as was also the case last season. This time, we get Timothy Busfield, Jon Favreau, Julie Kavner, Michael McKean, Ron Perlman, George Segal, John Stamos, and Bradley Whitford; and their only purpose seems to be filling out the camera lens. After all, Ullman can't be everywhere at once, in spite of her talents. And to many of these celebrities, doing Ullman's show is the hip thing to do.

But hip doesn't make for funny, and there's only so much Chic, Hope Finch, and Linda Granger, a sane mind can take. Add in the myriad of quick vignettes in each of the 15 episodes, and you have one stone-faced reviewer doing his best to stay awake through a show that seems much longer than its sitcom-length running time would indicate. I wish we could see more serious acting from Ullman. She is incredible, and I respect her abilities so much. But the humor is flat; the format, tired. The simple fact she can still garner fame and acclaim after all these years of performing material such as this only hints at the even bigger accomplishments she could achieve, if only her mind was set to it. Until then, die-hard fans can cherish yet another collection of her antics; as for me, I'd rather she try something else.

This is a really odd idea for a DVD release. In Bill Maher's HBO television show, Real Time with Bill Maher, he does a short segment called New Rules. This segment is mostly made up of one-liner jokes that take shots at celebrities and the Bush administration. Each segment runs less than a minute, and this disc contains every one of them from the show's three seasons.

The jokes themselves are funny enough, but my big complaint is that this entire disc just plays like one big overblown special feature. The short segments are played one after another over a repetitive music bed for 45-minutes, and then the credits roll. There is nowhere near enough content here to justify a full DVD release of just this. This disc would make a wonderful companion piece to a Bill Maher stand-up special, but it by no means justifies a separate release all to itself.

Synopsis

For the longest time, Dennis Miller was known as the guy who could subreference unlike any other comedian, with tactical precision and timing long before anyone had heard of the Gilmore Girls. While some of the material may have been a bit redundant, he certainly put a spin to it unlike any other.

The truth may never come out as to why HBO cancelled Carnivale after the show's second season. They claim that it was a combination of decreased ratings and rising production costs equaling $2 million an episode. What doesn't make sense, however, is that the network also admits that they received as many as 50,000 emails in a single weekend following the cancellation announcement. The facts also show that they followed up this show that was “too expensive to be profitable” with Rome, a show that has been widely recognized as the most expensive television series ever produced.

Several months after the show was cancelled, HBO offered the show's producers the chance to shoot a 2-hour movie to finish up the story which was left hanging. They refused, as they claim that the entire story was planned out for six complete seasons, so a two-hour finale would not even come close to finishing up the story. The show runners then announced plans to finish up the story in comic book form, but nothing has been seen of this plan as of yet.

I’m a lucky guy. I was able to witness the game of baseball before we all became so jaded. While I wasn’t born early enough to have enjoyed Mantle, The Babe, or Joltin’ Joe, I was fortunate enough to watch the likes of Mike Schmidt. Mike stayed 18 years with one team. He never held out and was always responsible in his public persona. Oh, and he ended up being considered the best 3rd baseman of all time in nearly every millennium poll conducted. It is this experience growing up with Schmitty and his like that make these stories feel much closer to home than younger kids are likely to feel. Now we live in the days of juiced hitters, felony convictions, contract holdouts, and almost no player continuity with any team. These films bring hope. After the Black Sox scandal that nearly ruined America’s Pastime, it took players like these to return the game to the glory and most of all the honor from which it had fallen so far. These films make me long for the next generation of greatness. I can tell you they aren’t playing on any field today, but I grew up rooting for the Phillies. In the 1970’s there was a team blitz of the slogan “I believe”. If I learned anything at all it was how to hold on to hope. “Maybe next year.”

First up to the plate is Mickey Mantle. “Mantle: The Definitive Story Of Mickey Mantle” is no fluff piece. The story is candid and at times even harsh on the man. Mantle’s success is so much more amazing when you consider the number and severity of the injuries he suffered in his career. I believe his most impressive stat to be hitting over .300 for ten years. Few players today can string two years together now. A long parade of celebrities both in and out of sports give their insights into “The Mick”. These testimonials are a stunning example of the number of people’s lives he touched. Mantle was considered quite the party animal, but believe me when I say he couldn’t hold a candle to the kids of today in that department. Still, his actions on the field haven’t been approached by more than a few players since his time. He was certainly one of the most vulnerable of these Yankee legends. His career took quite a shaky start as unrealistic expectations dogged him from his first day with the team. The Yankee fans reacted quite harshly to his less than stellar beginnings, earning Mantle a crushing demotion to the minors where he considered quitting baseball. Lucky for the game he didn’t quit. Instead he found the heart to rise above his early setbacks and become truly one of the greats. His retirement years were plagued by alcoholism and finally a failed liver. Suspicions arose when Mantle appeared to be unfairly ushered to the top of the transplant list, a charge other celebrities like David Crosby have had to contend with. Whatever the truth, Mantle used his final days to champion organ donation and to speak out on alcohol abuse. Even in death, he set an example to follow and a challenge to all he left behind.

Synopsis

Photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders decided to do a series of portraits of some 30 porn stars. Two pictures of each, one clothed, one not, the same pose in both pictures. This is his documentary of that shoot. Scenes of the studio process are intercut with interviews with the various stars and talking-head moments from the likes of Karen Finley, Gore Vidal, John Waters and Whitley Streiber (!). We are at the other end of the porn spectrum from Dag Yngvesson’s Rated X – these are t...e top-paid performers, and so the overall experience is less depressing the world shown in Yngvesson’s film. (Though there is some inevitable overlap.) Many of the stars are very articulate (and not just from the expected sources such as porn star/activist Nina Hartley), and there is quite an interesting range of personalities and views presented here. Jenna Jameson is seen, but presumably was too expensive for an actual interview. Instead, she is talked about, and so accrues the semi-divine aura of an all-powerful, all-knowing, enigmatic Mona Lisa. One is left a bit wanting: one doesn’t learn very much about Greenfield-Sanders’ photographic process, and one wishes many of the interviews were longer and more in-depth. That said, a fascinating piece.

Everybody Loves Raymond - The Complete Sixth Season comes to DVD in an impressive 5-disc edition. As a newbie to this fine series, I was surprised - and thrilled - to see the widescreen presentation. It is a nicety not often given to TV shows, and it looks spectacular, but I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. The show, as a lot of you know, is about sports writer Ray Barone, and his nut-job parents, who live directly across the street. One must either appreciate Ray Romano's humor, or experience the same...family woes, to truly appreciate this series - and if you do, then you're in for a real treat. Included in this set, is the number two fan favorite episode "Marie's Sculpture," which centers around an abstract that isn't so abstract, made by Ray's mom in her sculpting class. While this episode is very funny, I think the show is at its best when Ray's wife Debra (Patricia Heaton) and his mother Marie (Doris Roberts) are going at it Romano-y-Romano. The show never resorts to stale mother-in-law jokes, opting instead to pull its laughs from the characters and their interactions with one another.

Of course, no serious talk of Everybody Loves Raymond can be complete without mentioning the terrific jobs Brad Garrett and the always reliable Peter Boyle do with their brother and father characters, respectively. The two are dichotomies of one another. Robert is the ever insecure older brother, who is always left out of even the most mundane family activities. He's the kind of guy, who has to fight for every ounce of attention - and affection - his mother gives him, and his large, staggering frame only serves to drain a little more humor from the tank. Frank (Boyle), on the other hand, is so self-confident he just doesn't give a damn about others' opinions - and why should he? Father knows best, at least in his eyes. Taking a back seat to all the goings-on is Ray Barone (Romano). Romano subscribes to the Seinfeld school of sitcoms here by letting the stellar supporting cast do all the hard work for him. His character is like Frank - and why shouldn't he be, everyone loves the guy - but he doesn't have to resort to the same over-the-top performance because he understands Boyle is already doing it so well. These five individuals will make you believe they're related, and they will do such a good job of it that, if you give the show a chance, you will notice comments, events, and subtleties, that exist in your own family. It's very possible you won't like this show the first time you try to sit through it. But stay married long enough, and you'll really start to appreciate it.
