Good morning, evening or afternoon! I’m pleased to announce that there are big changes in the works for UpcomingDiscs – to bring you more reviews, news, and great movie coverage in a much better format.
In a nutshell, were moving UpcomingDiscs from its current layout, design, and “backend system” to WordPress. WordPress is a fantastic blogging platform that will make UpcomingDiscs easier to read and enjoy – on the site, in your email inbox, and in your RSS reader. WordPress also makes UpcomingDiscs much eas…er to update, post to, and maintain – meaning more writing, regular updates, and new features.
There are a few things that will be going, however.
Layout…
The current layout and appearance will change drastically. All of the same content will be there, however – just organized a little bit differently.
Search…
WordPress has much better search capability – looking forward to this.
Category Specific RSS Feeds and Email Alerts…
This is a big one. If you’ve subscribed to email alerts or RSS feeds for a specific genre or category or whathaveyou, I’m sorry to say that they’re no longer going to be updated. Instead, were switching to a single unified feed/email alert system, that combined with WordPress, will (1) keep you in touch with UpcomingDiscs in a more regular, consistent fashion, and (2) get rid of a whole bunch of system problems.
DVD Battle…
Yes, were dropping this for the moment. Our focus going forward is going to be on community and great content; if people are clamoring for it, we can put it back at a later date.
Rate this DVD…
For the moment, user ratings are going out as well. Instead, you’re encourage to share your thoughts on a disc in the much improved WordPress commenting system.
Comments…
Whew! WordPress does great things for comments making it way easier to share your thoughts, and to keep spam out.
Less Advertising…
Were ditching the ads in the middle of reviews, a bunch of banners and other stuff for a great site sponsorship system that offers our business partners and sponsors great advertising in a much less annoying presentation.
Forum…
This change has already take place. The UpcomingDiscs forum has been moved to FeatureForum.com where it will serve as a community base for both UpcomingDiscs and HDDB as well as another secret project underway.
A Million Other Things…
No doubt there’s about 50,000 minor differences and upgrades that I’m forgetting about, as well as things you may find disruptive or annoying. For that I apologize and ask for your patience and feedback. The UpcomingDiscs readers and community make the site the awesome place that it is, and we value your feedback greatly. If you’ve got thoughts to share, please comment below or contact me directly at rod (at) upcomingdiscs (dot) com.
