I read the book Submarine by Joe Dunthorne about a year ago and I don’t think I’ve ever read a book I could relate to so much. Oliver thinks in that ingenious and slightly absurd way that I find I do and the film takes ideas from great classic films and makes them better. When you’re watching it it’s not exactly “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore” but it’s pretty different to any film I’ve ever watched. As a filmmaker I really want to win this film so I can get more inspiration from Richard Ayoade to make my own films.
What better place to confine teen angst than within the layers of a DVD? I love discovering a hidden gem of a movie, and everything I’ve heard or read about ‘Submarine’ proclaims it’s just that!
