Synopsis

Years after the events of Bride of Chucky, evil dolls Chucky (voice of Brad Dourif) and Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) are dormant and being used to make a Chucky movie, starring in-decline sexpot Jennifer Tilly. (I know: very postmodern already, and we’ve only just begun.) Their offspring (voice of Billy Boyd), of indeterminate gender and gentle spirit, escapes its evil ventriloquist captor, travels to Hollywood and revives the demonic duo, unaware of their psychotic natures. Chucky wants ... boy, and names the child Glen. Tiffany wants a girl, and picks the name Glenda. Chucky wants Glen to take up the knife, while Tiffany tries to quit killing (but keeps having slips). Meanwhile, they plan to impregnate Tilly so that Glen/Glenda can become a real child, while the parents plan to transfer their souls into the bodies of Redman and Tilly. Lurking in the background is, appropriately, John Waters as a paparazzo.

As usual, National Lampoon comes up with a silly but at times funny movie - if you like silly that is. The two leading goofballs are just off the wall enough to make this movie bearable.

Gold Diggers is about two young losers named Cal (Will Friedle) and Lenny (Chris Owen) who enter a life of crime trying to survive on the streets. Unfortunately, they are terrible at it and end up going in and out of jail a couple of times before things begin to look up for them - they attempt to rob two very old si...ters who end up wanting to marry them. The guys are all for this as Cal has the idea of offing them to inherit their estate while the sisters want to off the young men to collect on an insurance policy they have taken out on them. The two opposing teams show smiling faces toward each other while plotting the others' demise.

Arguably the last funny member of Saturday Night Live has picked some strange movies to be in since leaving the sketch comedy show. Appearing first as a co-star in Old School and then later in the kid-friendly (but cute) Elf, Will Ferrell took his time in getting to what fans wanted, a good PG-13 or better comedy for him to stretch his comedic talent.

By and large, Anchorman does deliver on that, though occasionally Ferrell himself isn’t the one causing the laughs. As 1970s San ...iego newsman Ron Burgundy, Ferrell is the one everyone in town trusts, along with his newsteam. The chemistry is broken when female newscaster Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate, Married With Children) is hired. Ron has to resolve the conflicts between himself, his team and his new interest in Veronica…

Species III comes from good genes. The original was kind of fun (and starred Ben Kinglsey!), but the first sequel was not as fun. But here comes the second sequel. It has the original alien girl Natasha Henstridge, but her appearance is short (I’ll just leave it at that). The director, Brad Turner, is a veteran of action television shows like 24. Is this direct to DVD release the best one of the “species”? The answer tilts towards the negative.

But Species III has a few things goi...g for it. If you like the gore, there are some nice effects here. In fact, Species III plays like a horror film more than sci-fi. The budget constraints limit the movie to a few locations, so its scope isn’t as broad as the other Species siblings. Sunny Mabrey, who bares a striking resemblance to her alien mother (Henstridge), plays the new daughter. This species chick can kick some serious a$#. And the filmmakers, in this unrated cut, make sure to show off Sunny’s other features (yes, there is above the waist nudity).

The Ranch is a movie about life in bawdy high class brothel. It’s supposedly based on a real life place. Somewhere in Nevada I think. The Ranch is advertised as unrated and uncut. And it’s also SINsational; well…I’m not so sure of the sational part. And maybe not even about the sin. There are some naked breasts from time to time, and some matter of fact and tasteful sex scenes. But there’s nothing really too hot. If this movie is salsa, it would be mild.

But if you’re doing a disserta...ion on prostitute movies then The Ranch is your gold mine. It has every cliché in the book. SPOILERS AHEAD. Let’s see, there’s the prostitute with the kid, and of course the “lady of the evening” is worried that she’s not the proper role model. There’s the prostitute who quits “the life” and has to lie to her fiancé about what she used to do for a living. There’s the prostitute with the “dark past”, and her old pimp comes a runnin’. And there’s the prostitute who starts dating a man in a “real” relationship and well…the dialogue goes something like, “we’re gonna date and you’re gonna watch me take guys to my room all night?”. I could go on. But I’ll just start a new paragraph.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Y Tu Mama Tambien is just another trite love triangle movie, one that would have some catchy Sum 41 or Weezer song in all the promos. This movie is about far more than that. It’s about the nature of friendship, the consequence of action, teenage machismo, self-realization and learning what it means to enjoy life. This isn’t the Mexican version of Road Trip, either. They don’t get into wacky hijinks or the comedy of the absurd. Almost everything about Y Tu Mama T...mbien elicits audience reaction through its genuineness, its ability to get viewers to recognize the reality in the sometimes unorthodox relationships. It’s also got one of the most smoldering sexy women I’ve seen on the big screen talking about some seriously caliente subject matter (and at least according to female viewers I’ve spoken two, the two young men are attractive, too).

Y Tu Mama Tambien proves that no matter what language is being spoken, no matter what country a story takes place in, teenage boys are teenage boys. Such is the case with Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna). They’re typically immature, sort-of adhering to a “boys club” manifesto (advocating such values as smoking pot and masturbating), splitting their sides over farting in a car and describing the bouquet. To each other, they put up a brave front at the idea that their women are heading abroad for the summer, shrugging it off as their chance to dip their beaks in other wells. When left alone with them, though, they’re sentimental and weepy (though that might just be to get them laid one last time, another sign of their age). They sit around, smoking pot and using the local country club when it’s closed on Mondays, and their summer starts slipping away from them, in relative ho-hum fashion. Even through some of their stranger behavior, they remain imminently identifiable, which is one of the many factors that make the film accessible to even the casual movie fan; one doesn’t have to have an interest in foreign movies to appreciate it. Moreover, it gives the audience a real chance to care about the boys, a credit to Garcia and Luna’s polished, authentic (and more than a little brave at this point in their careers) performances. They encounter the stunning Luisa (Maribel Verdu) at a family party. She’s stunning, and the two instantly try to ply her with their “charms.” Not long after the party, they convince her (or she decides) to go with them to a surfside paradise, a place only they know, a beach called “Boca del Ciel” (Heaven’s Mouth). The catch: it doesn’t exist. They made it up while trying to entice her, and now, they have to find such a place. Tenoch and Julio are resourceful young men, and eventually will set off in a beat up station wagon on a quest for the perfect beach. Along the way, they hope to have sex with Luisa…though neither of them are sure how, much less even thought of what that might do to their trip.
