As usual, National Lampoon comes up with a silly but at times funny movie – if you like silly that is. The two leading goofballs are just off the wall enough to make this movie bearable.
Gold Diggers is about two young losers named Cal (Will Friedle) and Lenny (Chris Owen) who enter a life of crime trying to survive on the streets. Unfortunately, they are terrible at it and end up going in and out of jail a couple of times before things begin to look up for them – they attempt to rob two very old si…ters who end up wanting to marry them. The guys are all for this as Cal has the idea of offing them to inherit their estate while the sisters want to off the young men to collect on an insurance policy they have taken out on them. The two opposing teams show smiling faces toward each other while plotting the others’ demise.
Audio
This disc sports a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track which has good vocal clarity for dialog and decent soundstage presence during music. There aren’t many scenes utilizing the surround channels but when they are used the effects are good.
Video
The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is quite good with no noticeable digital artifacts. Daytime scenes were sharp and colorful and dark scenes had good black level detail.
Special Features
There are a few extras include on this release, most of which are centered around the beautiful Nikki Zierling. The “Nikki” extras include Nude Outtakes, Backstage At The “Gold Diggers” Photo Shoot , Gold Digging Tips For Men, & Gold Digging Tips For Women. Other extras found on this disc are Bloopers, Deleted Scenes, Alternate Beginning & Ending, Lenny & Cal’s Gold Digging Tips, & the Original Trailer. All of these extras are relatively short and uneventful except for the, ahemm, nude outtakes!
Final Thoughts
There aren’t many great moments in this film, but the good ones do make you laugh. This disc ends up being a few notches under your typical National Lampoon comedy, but it does have just enough hilarious scenes and appearances by the sultry Nikki Ziering to make it watchable.
