Synopsis
Roxy Hart will do anything to get famous; she cheats on her husband (John C. Riley) with a furniture salesman because he tells her that he can get her a jazz act in a club. When he admits that he was lying about his contacts at the jazz club she kills him in a fit of rage. She convinces her somewhat dim husband to lie to the police and take the blame but as he is telling his story to the police he puts one and one together and figures and tells the cops the truth. She finds herself on Chicag...’s famed murderess row with nightclub sensation Velma Kelly. Velma is in jail for murdering her husband and sister after catching the two of them together. Billy Flynn is the most famous lawyer in town and can get anyone off, he manipulates the media and is just as concerned with his own fame as he is with helping his clients.

In 1927 Herbert Asbury published a book entitled The Gangs of New York: An informal history of the Underworld. This book would prove to be the inspiration for Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York. This film was originally supposed to start filming in the late 1970’s, and after numerous delays and many financial issues, the film finally came to fruition in 2002.
It is an epic film of staggering proportions about a little known part of the history of the United States and New York City. We follow a story filled with both real and fictional characters through the slums of the lower Manhattan’s Five Points. A young Irish immigrant played by Leonardo Dicaprio returns to the Five Points to seek revenge against the man who killed his father Bill Cutting played by Daniel Day Lewis.

This is the story of Frida Kahlo, now recognized as one of Mexico’s greatest artists. Most particularly, the film is the story of her tempestuous love affair with fellow artist Diego Rivera --their loves, their clashes, their politics, their infidelities, their betrayals, and so on. So much attention is paid to this relationship that Kahlo’s art itself slips into the background, which is too bad. That said, this is a tremendously engaging film, with great performances all round.It is also a spectacular movie to look at. If Kahlo’s art doesn’t take centre stage in the narrative, it does in the look of the film, informing almost every frame. The visual impact is not simply eye candy,however. Every colour is thematically relevant. This is a film made by creators very conscious of the visual possibilities of cinema.

Rifling through my father’s LP collection as a child produced many musical memories, ranging from Kiss and Pablo Cruise to the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. It wouldn’t be until years later when I would fully understand the impact those very Beatles had on the world’s culture then and continued to influence today.

Swingers originally debuted on DVD when the format was still in its infancy. As with most titles released during that time, it suffered from a lackluster 2.0 audio track, non-anamorphic transfer, no trailers and hideous packaging. Now roughly five years later, Swingers has returned to DVD, this time in a spiffy new Collector’s Series edition from Miramax. With every issue the first release was plagued by addressed, this release is everything a fan of Swingers could ever hope for.
Swingers' story focuses on...the misery of Mike (John Favreau, writer), an aspiring actor/comedian whom is lovesick after leaving his girlfriend in New York six months prior. Encouraged by Trent (Vince Vaughn) and several other friends, Mike sets out to reluctantly conquer women on the Hollywood lounge scene. Unfortunately for Mike, it's not always "On" and he is humiliated time after time again. It takes the fancy swing dance moves of Loraine (Heather Graham) to finally rid Mike’s brain of the haunting memories with his ex.

Pam Grier, in a superb performance that sadly did not revitalize her career to the same degree as happened with co-star Robert Forster (and with John Travolta in Pulp Fiction), plays a flight attendant who is being used as a pawn by both bad guy Samuel L. Jackson and FBI guy Michael Keaton. Grier, with the help of bail bondsman Forster, sets up an elaborate counterattack. While Jackie Brown lacks the propulsive intensity of Reservoir Dogs, and Tarantino's reliance on 70s-dominated soundtracks is getting annoying, the...writing is still very strong, Tarantino gets ace performances out of his cast, and the climax is a rather striking piece of bravura filmmaking.

Film
Bruce Willis, Samual L. Jackson, Ving Rhames, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth... and the list goes on. Never has one singular film launched the careers of so many actors as Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. This film brought John Travolta back from actor's purgatory, and gave almost every other actor a jump-start to their careers. This film is genius - from the plot, the style, and the acting. Tarantino is very unique, and he out-did himself with this film.
