Synopsis

Carlos Santana has been a veritable part-owner in the Montreux Jazz Festival, with a half dozen or so appearances under his belt in over three decades of performing. Some have been solo appearances, but others have been fruitful collaborations with various blues and jazz performers, some singers. In 1988, Santana and friend Wayne Shorter performed at the show as part of a brief tour. The songs performed are listed as follows:

  • ”Spiritual”
  • ”Peraza”
  • ”Shhh…”
  • ”Incident at Neshabur”
  • ”Elegant People”
  • Percussion Solo
  • ”Goodness and Mercy”
  • ”Sanctuary”
  • ”For Those Who Chant”
  • ”Blues for Salvador”
  • ”Fireball 2000”
  • ”Drum Solo”
  • ”Ballroom in the Sky”
  • ”Once It’s Gotcha”
  • ”Mandela”
  • ”Deeper, Dig Deeper”
  • ”Europa”

Audio

The Montreux group has released the concerts usually with a 5.1 or DTS soundtrack, and both are here. They sound quite good and present a good range for the ear.

Video

Full frame viewing, but that’s largely because this was shot pre-HD exclusive stuff, no widescreen to think of. It looks acceptable considering the material.

Special Features

Aside from some interview material, nothing too much, to be honest.

Closing Thoughts

While a primer on Santana wouldn’t start with this, the performance itself is still passable. I’d recommend checking it out when it airs on TV, or rip it to a CD or something.
