Season 4 brought a few changes to the Homicide: Life On The Streets beat. Beatty’s and Baldwin’s characters would exit. Reed Diamond and Max Perlich would enter the cast to replace them. Diamond’s Kellerman, an arson investigator turned homicide detective, would provide the more interesting character arc for the season. Year 4 also marked a change in style to more of the multi-episode stories. Another Law and Order crossover is a bit confusing because there isn’t the Dick Wolf franchise episode to complete it. I’d li...

In season four, Redd Foxx ended his eight episode holdout for more money after a significant raise. Redd’s return would make this one of the show’s most creative years. Ironically one of the series’ funniest moments occurs in the Redd-less opening episode when Grady feeds the local cops pot instead of parsley. Sanford and Son also reached the peak of its popularity with this 1974-1975 season. Many weeks it was the number one rated show and finished the entire season ranked second.

CSI continued to improve into its third season. The stories are as crisp and innovative as ever. Surprisingly, the show did not suffer from the addition of its fine but inferior Miami cousin. Minor characters like lab tech Greg are put to much better use. The f/x get better also, and a strong cast of guest stars doesn’t hurt the mix either.

This Dolby Digital 5.1 sound once again reinvents TV sound. Highs and lows both exhibit dynamic performance. Dialogue is crisp and always clear. ...

JULES - "That's what I've been sitting here contemplating. First, I'm gonna’ deliver this case to Marsellus. Then, basically, I'm gonna’ walk the earth."

VINCENT - "What do you mean, walk the earth?"

JULES - "You know, like Caine in KUNG FU. Just walk from town to town, meet people, get in adventures."

These words, spoken between John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in Quentin Tarrantino’s amazing film Pulp Fiction, marked the first time that I ever heard of ...

Synopsis

Though not Blake Edwards’ best films, these are the movies with which he is most stronglyidentified, and the role of Inspector Clouseau was a career-defining move for Peter Sellers. Attheir best, the movies are fine exemplars of inspired slapstick.

The Pink Panther started it all off, and no one knew what a phenomenon Clouseauwas going to turn out to be. Edwards and Sellers (the trivia track informs us) rewrote the partlate in the game to turn the character i...

Stargate SG-1 suffered a little in its switch to the Sci-Fi Channel. The loss of Michael Shanks was very deeply felt. Jonas wasn’t really a bad character, but it took me a while to get used to him. The guest appearances of Daniel Jackson helped a bit with a couple of pretty good episodes. I felt there might have been too many Earthbound episodes in an obvious effort to curtail the budget. Through most of this season, Anderson had been talking about spending more time back in L.A. with his family. (The show is shot in...

So many people believe the “buddy cop” routine started with Lethal Weapon, or maybe Running Scared. Truth be told, Starsky and Hutch was quite a breakout from the cop shows of the time. The studio was picketed for the amount of violence portrayed, which by today’s standards wouldn’t raise an eyebrow.

This is typical 70’s from the film stock to the wardrobe. The unique Ford Grand Torino was so popular that Ford ended up manufacturing a limited number of the replicas. David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser had s...

Synopsis

The title has two meanings. It works as both the common expression, meaning that peopleare strange (which the show certainly demonstrates). But it also presents the “queer” as “folk”:i.e. gay characters are, for once, realistic, ordinary human beings. This aspect goes a long waytoward explaining the series’ popularity. In this season, the continuing threads include apregnancy for Melanie and Lindsay, and the nasty politics surrounding the campaign of thecontroversial Mayor ...

Star Trek Voyager was the third spin-off from the original Star Trek following the Superior Next Generation and the inferior Deep Space Nine. While the idea was quite an original premise, the cast never seemed to gel. The obvious attempt at political correctness gives us the most diverse cast yet on Star Trek, including the first female captain. Kate Mulgrew is the weakest captain to date on Star Trek. (I know I’ll catch heat for this.) The reason is not her gender but such a lack of strength. She never walks but see...
