Gas Food Lodging

Three women in small town Texas deal with their complicated lives. Nora Evans (Brook Adams) struggles with being a single mother raising two daughters. Trudi Evans (Ione Skye) is a rebellious trouble maker and very promiscuous much to the dismay of her mother, after getting pregnant and the father disappearing she moves to Dallas to have the baby and give it up for adoption. Her sister Shade (Fairuza Balk) justs wants everyone to be happy and does whatever she can to find her mom a man, including tracking down her re…l father.

Video

This 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer is of average quality. The image is somewhat soft with washed out blacks. This causes the colors in the film to be somewhat muted, this may have been intentional as the film takes place in the desert and this factors into the story somewhat. The other issue is that there is a higher then normal amount of film grit and debris.

Audio

The Dolby Surround mix contained on the disc is nothing spectacular either. This is a mainly dialog driven film and the center channel does a good job of presenting us with nice clean dialogue with no issues. The surrounds are used ever so slightly when we venture out into the desert and when the soundtrack plays. A quick note on the soundtrack, the music is provided by J. Mascis of Diansour Jr. and I found it to be unique and engaging. As far as bass information goes there really is none outside of the score and even there it used very minimally.

Final Thoughts

Overall the film has a decent storyline with good acting, it is held back though by average video quality and audio. The other issue I have is that the story really just lacks that lingering afterthought that a really good film leaves you with, it held the potential but in the end pulled the punch. If you are a fan of indy film check this out though as it is overall pretty good.
