Synopsis
Ronald Colman, in an Oscar-winning performance (1948), plays an actor who takes methodacting to the extreme. He truly disappears into his roles, and this becomes a problem when hiscurrent project is Othello. Little by little he loses touch with reality, with consequences that provedeadly for waitress Shelley Winters. Filled with delicious portraits of the New York theatrescene, with top talent both behind and in front of the camera, this is a strong thriller. Highlyrecommen…ed.

The case boasts a 2.0 surround mix, but this is no more surround than I am the Pope. Frankly,however, I would much prefer the original mono (as we effectively have here) than a butchered2.0 mix that does nothing more than create surround voices and raise the volume on the static.There is some background hiss audible, but very little, and while the music during the openingcredits distorts somewhat, the sound is generally clean.
Video
There is no grain, and very little damage visible in this print. The blacks are superb, thoughI wonder if some shots might not be a bit murkier than originally intended. There are virtually nospeckles, so all in all a superb-looking transfer, very moody and dark.

As basic a DVD as you can get, but easily worth a rental, given the strength of the film.
