Synopsis

George Sand is a documentary filmmaker, and quite conceited about the fact. He comes tothe US from the UK to shoot a documentary about the 2nd Mike Wong Film Festival. Curiously, all of the competitors at the festival, each of which worked on Wong’s last movie before he died, start being murdered one by one. Sand decides to uncover the murderer. This is a cheerfully sillylow-budget film, loaded with hilarious send-ups of student films. The sense of the absurd isnicely underst…ted, and several scenes had me laughing out loud.

Audio

The sound is, as far as I can determine, 2.0, but the mix is nice. The music sounds fine, andthe voice quality is excellent, entirelyi free of distortion. The sound FX are well deployed, andthere is some good left-right separation as well. About an hour in, there is a sudden loudburst of static, for some reason.

Video

The format is 1.85:1, and the transfer is solid. The contrasts are good, as are the colours(though they are a trifle pale at times). The blacks are strong, and there is no grain. A bit of edgeenhancement creeps in now and then.

Special Features

Not too much here. There’s a trailer, a still gallery, and bios of director Evan Oppenheimerand stars Natasha Lyonne and Alan Cox. The menu’s main page is scored, with something likea slide show going on in the background, while the chapter selections are scored andanimated.

Closing Thoughts

This is a fun little discovery. Unpretentious, intelligent, silly, and very winning.
