Intro
It is interesting to see a film with such a tiny budget ($500,000) on the MGM label.
Synopsis
The film is centred around a Girl Bar, and follows the trials and tribulations in love of a group of lesbians. Loretta, a TV cartoon writer, is the central figure (though this is pretty close to being an ensemble piece), and is something like a cross between Bette Midler and Bridget Jones. Bar Girls was originally a play, and a good job was done of opening the story up – the film does no… feel set-bound at all. The film’s stars were also the play’s original cast, and they still seem to be playing the back of the room.
Audio
The audio mix is very good, all things considered. Remember: we’re talking micro-budget here, and consequently the overall sound is a bit thin. Taking that into consideration, there is still a fair bit of rear speaker play for both the music and sound effects.
Video
Again, the film’s means must be taken into account. This is not a Baz Luhrmann film, so don’t expect to be blown away by the colours and compositions. Still, this is a respectful release, preserving the 1.85:1 ratio. The colours are good, though everyone looks perhaps a tad too pale.
Features
Nothing here except a trailer.
Closing Thoughts
The film tries a bit too hard to be funny, but it also feels refreshingly honest.
