Intro
Can you believe that this film is the pre-cursor to the highly popular television show? It is really entertaining to compare the film to the t.v. show, but unfortunately this film did not receive a great treatment on DVD. I am sure you can figure out the premise, but here is the film’s synopsis courtesy of Fox…
Synopsis
“Blonde, bouncy Buffy (Kristy Swanson) is your typical high school cheerleader – her goal is to “marry Christian Slater and die” and nothing gets in her way …hen it’s time to shop. But all that changes when a strange man (Donald Sutherland) informs her she’s been chosen by fate to kill vampires. With the help of a romantic rebel (Luke Perry), Buffy is soon spending school nights protecting LA from Lothos, the Vampire King (Rutger Hauer), his sidekick, Lefty (Paul reubens), and their determined gang of bloodsuckers.”
Audio
I’ve come not to expect too much from Fox when it comes to audio in older films and Buffy is no exception. The sound effects were way over done to the point of cheesy. During fight scenes I was reminded of early Batman episodes with the “Biffs” and the “Pows”. This disc features English 4.0 Surround or English Dolby Surround. Subtitles are available in English and Spanish.
Video
The film is presented in Anamorphic Widescreen (Aspect Ratio 1.85:1) which I’m sure make everyone very happy. The picture is fairly clear considering the film is mostly set in the dark. There was no noticeable granulation and there was fairly good coloration.
Features
There was very little in the special features department. You can watch the Theatrical Trailer, and two TV spots, the Fantasy version and the Hip-Hop version.
The only feature that has a bit of substance is a short featurette that includes cast interviews. But it’s basically a glorified and extended version of the theatrical trailer.
Closing Thoughts
Considering the fact that Buffy is a teen comedy horror flick there were no high expectations on my part and even they weren’t met. I like the film itself. It’s fun. But don’t bother purchasing it for its quality or quantity.
