Synopsis
Untroubled by charisma, Jimmy Kimmel hosts this concertedly nasty roast of Pamela Anderson. The roasters include Tommy Lee, Adam Carolla, Sarah Silverman, Andy Dick, Bea Arthur, and Courtney Love. They all mangle each other as well as the guest of honour. So many jokes involve Anderson’s breasts and Lee’s penis that the they get rather boring (scratch that: EXTREMELY boring), but there are a few very funny bits. The highlight is Bea Arthur’s reading of Anderson’s novel Star. Arthur’s …elivery, her constant disbelieving looks directed at the “author,” and the riotously awful prose itself make sitting through the more predictable moments worthwhile. Notable too is the spectacularly off-kilter Love. That woman needs help.
Audio
Sound design is largely beside the point in a presentation such as this. But the job is done very well. The 2.0 audio delivers a blisteringly high volume, and all the extremely profane dialogue is crystal clear. The music (Lee performs a song) is given a solid mix, and the audience’s laughter and clapping is frequently placed so as to make the viewer feel part of that crowd.
Video
Fairly standard as far as TV transfers go. It’s good, but not overwhelming. The colours are very strong, as are the blacks. Flesh tones and contrasts are fine, and there is no grain. There is, however, some pixelation. It never reaches the point of bad distortion, but it does sometimes create some odd effects.
Special Features
The best of these is footage of Courtney Love and Andy Dick in rehearsal. That woman REALLY needs help. Other, more promotional stuff is either brief and pointless (“The Pee Break”) or less clever than it thinks it is (the red carpet interviews and outtakes). There are also three Comedy Central “Quickies” (snippets from other shows: “Mind of Mencia,” “Reno 911″ and “South Park”). The menu’s intro and transitions are animated and scored, and the main screen is animated.
Closing Thoughts
It’s nasty, all right, but only sporadically funny. When it is funny, however, it’s very funny.
