Rik Mayall (Drop Dead Fred) and Adrian Edmondson are the stars in this British comedy about two obnoxious loaners at the bottom of the food chain. Follow along with Richie Richard and Eddie Hitler on their quest for love and money as they try out pheromones, dating services and visit the carnival. This DVD collection contains all three seasons of the show for a total of 18 episodes.
Video
This disc contains a 1.33:1 fullscreen transfer of very good quality. The putrid green color of Richie and Eddie’s apartment comes through in all its grimy glory. Black levels are spot on and the only real issue is that the disc is plagued with fairly heavy edge enhancement. Menu’s are non-animated but are scored with the theme music from the series.
Audio
With a standard Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track this disc sounds average. Being a fairly dialogue driven experience Eddie and Richie’s heavy British accents come through in all their nasal glory. The surrounds get no workout at all and same for the subwoofer. The front stage does get used a fair bit for sound effects from the slapstick that is thrown into the show.
Special Features
For special features we have uncut bloopers and outtakes from all three series and talent files for the cast, crew and guest stars. Also included are early stand-up performances by Rick Mayall and Ade Edmundson on the 80’s British variety program, Boom Boom…Out Go the Lights. For a British comedy that most of us on this side of the pond know nothing about the special features are adequate although it would have been nice to have a commentary track with the stars of the show.
Final Thoughts
Take a liberal dose of John Cleese and add in equal parts The Three Stooges and you have a pretty good idea what you are getting yourself into here. Full of lots of good slapstick and toilet humor this is the funniest sitcoms I have ever seen. You owe it to yourself to check this one out.
