Synopsis
Amoral would-be dance star Roxie Hart (Ginger Rogers) is convinced by her agent and areporter to take the blame for a murder. The thinking is that no woman has ever been convictedof murder in Chicago, and the attendant publicity will do wonders for her career. Truer wordswere never spoke, as the cynical dance of lawyers and media begins.
Many readers will, of course, have seen this story recently in the musical Chicago.Here you get the story with none of the …ongs, but, perhaps surprisingly, considerably more bite.The cynicism is invigorating, the pace lighting-quick (the movie clocks in at 74 minutes), andGinger Rogers is a hoot, all legs, attitude and gum-chewing. Seriously hilarious stuff.
Audio
The audio comes in both stereo and the original mono. In point of fact, there is very littledifference between the two. This is not, however, necessarily a bad thing. There is a perhaps abit more richness to the 2.0 sound, but there is nothing by way of surround effect. This is good,since most stereo remixes result in surround voices, and that distracting flaw is absent here.Instead, the sound is crisp, clean and devoid of hiss.
Video
Some kinda gorgeous print here. The grain and speckling are virtually non-existent. Sure,there is some minor flicker and a little glare now and then, but these are very minor issues. Onthe positive side, the black-and-white is damn near perfect, and the image is sharp enough todraw blood.
Special Features
Sadly, very little on offer: two versions of the trailer (plus some other Fox musical DVDreleases), and that’s it. The menu is basic.
Closing Thoughts
Enormous fun. If you like Chicago, check this out. You may even like it better.
