This set contains all episodes of season 3 from M*A*S*H in broadcast order. This season of M*A*S*H from a critical standpoint was probably one of the best of the 11 seasons, this was the year that the show won the Peabody award, the highest award you can receive in television, and co-producer gene Reynolds won an Emmy award for directing the episode, “O.R.” which is seen here uncut and unedited. Also on this disc are the episodes The General Flipped at Dawn, Officer of the Day, Check-up, and Rainbow Bridge, Iron gut… Kelly, Springtime and Life with Father.
Audio
The audio is strictly two channel stereo and is of average quality. There is very little if anything going on in the rear channels, dialogue intelligibility is at times lacking and there is very little bass in the disc at all. Let’s not forget though that these episodes where originally shot in 1974.
Video
Fox has done a good job with the video transfer of these episodes. The images are noticeably sharper then the original TV broadcasts. Color quality and punch is average as it appears somewhat muted but, again lets not forget that we are talking about film from 1974. There are no noticeable instances of edge enhancements or conversion artifacts.
Special Features
There are no special features contained on this set and the menus are simple still photos.
Final Thoughts
If you are a fan of the original TV series then you should be lining up at your local DVD retailer on the 18th of February (2003) to purchase this collection. The episodes on this disc are classic M*A*S*H and show it at its best with a much improved image quality. If you where just a casual fan of the series then this is the season to rent and enjoy.
