Synopsis

Three directors, three doses of uncompromising Asian horror. The first, and nastiest, is “Dumplings” (directed by Fruit Chan), which tells the story of a woman who purchases some very expensive dumplings said to restored youth. What is the secret ingredient? The worst thing you can think of, trust me. And the film leaves nothing to the imagination. Where others would imply the horror and let your imagination do the rest of the work, “Dumplings” gets your imagination working, and then tops it... Nasty stuff indeed.

Utter the simple phrase of Harry Potter to any age, and it is nearly guaranteed that they will know what you are speaking about. Since becoming a worldwide phenomenon in 1999, the Harry Potter series have been turned into everything from video games to bathing products. Most notably, the series have been turned into a set of excellent films that are successful, for the most part, in recreating the major elements presented in the novels by author J.K.Rowling.

With this being the fourth film in the series of ...even, I had a few fears going into this film. With this book being the longest of the four books at this point, I was worried that new director Mike Newell would’nt be successful in presenting all the ideas Rowling went over in the book. While the film does not mention every little detail (the most notable gripe is the lack of the Dursley’s), Newell is very successful in bringing the action, suspense, fear, emotion, and growth of the characters to the big screen in stunning style.

Each year there are quality films that slip through the cracks for one reason or another. Lord of War is one of those movies. At first look, I would blame this film’s lack of financial success on the marketing department. It was hard to get a feel for the film through the trailers and commercials.

What was it about? A gun salesman? With Nicolas Cage and a bunch of spent bullet casings at the front and center of the ad campaigns, one might think that this was another Jerry Bruckheimer action-fest muc... like past Cage vehicles The Rock or Con-Air. But Lord of War could not be more different than those films. OK, so maybe it’s not the marketing department’s fault after all. Lord of War is a tough movie to pin down. And in today’s age of fast food cinema, it’s no surprise that Lord of War was pushed to the back of theaters upon its release.

Synopsis

Sarah Miles is the spoiled young daughter of Leo McKern. In the troubled Ireland of 1916, she falls in love with, and marries, middle-aged schoolteacher Robert Mitchum. Their marriage hits troubled waters when she begins a passionate affair with a young English officer, which is a politically delicate move, to say the least.

When news of a sequel to 1998’s The Mask of Zorro was first announced, I was very excited as I really enjoyed The Mask of Zorro. The film had an interesting story and great acting from Banderas and Hopkins. But as I learned more and more about the sequel, I became extremely worried as neither of the two screenwriters (Ted Elliot or Terry Rossio) were returning. Also, we would be introduced to their cute little child (and EVERYONE knows how much adding little children to sequels can do for a film’s likea...ility). Could The Legend of Zorro take all these usual negatives and make a positive sequel? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

The first big problem with this film is the character of Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Elena, in the first film, was delight. She was funny and Zeta Jones’ performance was a joy. In this film, possibly because Zeta-Jones has blown up since then, it seems like the screenwriters don’t have anything better for Elena to do than nag her husband. This scenario results in Elena becoming the type of wife that says “NO!---YOU still need Zorro!” to her husband. To sum up her role in the film, she wants Zorro to stop ‘Zorroing’ because he is neglecting their only son. She threatens to leave Zorro if he puts the mask back on again. Naturally, Zorro promises not to.

Synopsis

The setting is an exclusive boys’ private school in New England, 1959. Welton Academy is deeply hidebound and conservative, and into this environment comes one of its graduates, Robin Williams, to teach English literature, and along the way encourage his students to make of their lives what they want, now what is expected of them. This approach clashes with the establishment’s ideas of how things should be done, and raises the ire of one parent in particular, whose son takes too much interes..., he thinks, in creative endeavours.

Disney continues to pull its disappearing acts on DVD with their limited time offers, this time using the new Toy Story 2 2-disc release as the proverbial carrot in front of the mule. While such marketing tactics may be a little annoying to those of us that don’t like to be told when we can or can’t see a movie, there should be no greater incentive to pick this up if you haven’t yet claimed a copy of the film. Toy Story 2 cemented Pixar’s name in quality animation and continued to prove the little studi... that could, could continue to knock one after the other out of the park.

In this outing, Woody’s the one in trouble. A yard-sale robbery has placed him in the hands of the villainous Al from Al’s Toy Barn. Al (voiced by Seinfeld’s Wayne Knight) needs Woody to complete his Woody’s Round-Up collection, and now that he has him, he plans on selling the entire display to a Japanese toy museum. That’s when all the lovable toys from Andy’s toy box come together for one of the greatest rescue missions in Disney animation history. Highlighted by moments of spot-on satire, kid-friendly humor, heart-felt poignancy (as in the teary-eyed memories of Jessie, the Yodeling Cowgirl), and an unforgettable airport finale (with its own share of twists, turns, and thrills), Toy Story 2 equals its predecessor and takes Pixar to the next level of superior entertainment.

The Gospel is the first mainstream film to come out in quite sometime that deals with the role of the African-American church. Reading the title of the film, one must think The Gospel is an overly heavy religious filled film right? Well, I am very happy to say that the film is not particularly a religious film, but what a film that has the type of characters that can make a viewer become a believer. Not necessarily the type of believer of the church, but the type of believer in the music that is sung in...The Gospel. The film deals with the economic and social function of the whole church mainly how the church operates as a stabilizing force, a stage for random personalities, an area for various power battles and a business that must find a way to make a profit otherwise it will find itself going out of business.

The films features such well-known singers as Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Martha Munizzi and ‘American Idol’ finalist Tamyra Gray. Even though the film does have a plot, the film never spends too long on one area only to return to the musical performances, which is where the film become so enjoyable.

Synopsis

Welcome to Vince Lombardi High School, where new principal Mary Woronov (coming on like a cross between Miss Jean Brodie and Ilsa) is determined to stomp the student body into submission. In order to do this, she wants to banish rock music. Her chief antagonist is PJ Soles, a huge fan of the Ramones, and she eventually enlists the band itself to help defeat Woronov and her fascistic hall monitors.

Peter Weir’s Gallipoli is a remarkable film. Starring an inexperienced model, who was only intended to be used for a photo shoot to promote the picture and shot on a small budget, this film's longevity and frequently attained levels of excellence could have never been predicted. That doesn't mean Gallipoli will be turning up on any all-time best lists any time soon, as the first half has a tendency to drag its feet. However, a solid hour two punctuated by one of the most haunting images I have seen in a...war film elevates the material from slow-paced and dragging to something that actually works, and is certainly worthy of recommendation. Mark Lee, the model-turned-actor mentioned above, stars opposite Mel Gibson, and delivers a performance of such credibility that no one could have ever guessed he didn't know the first thing about acting. In fact, he holds his own with the already seasoned Gibson, and the two make a believable pairing as a couple of naive young men hungry for adventure, who make the mistake of seeking it during the First World War. Their paths lead them to the disastrous real-life battle of Gallipoli, where strategic incompetence led to the senseless slaughter of a great many Australian soldiers.

The sense of pride in one's country is always there, and the movie seems to endorse such a feeling. However, the anti-war message is never far from the surface, and it wells up prominently in the third act like blood from a liver wound that reappears as quickly as it’s washed. Still, it's anti-war without being partisan, and remains true to all the soldiers, who gave their lives for their country, their beliefs, and most importantly, their mates. Weir's directorial style also provides the film with two strong legs, and has since been imitated in every great modern war film, especially Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. The underwater shrapnel scene of Gallipoli is recreated with equal skill and effectiveness by Spielberg, but let's remember: Weir did it first. And Weir's constant use of exterior locations, while nearly achieving overkill status from time-to-time, demonstrates the director's expert sense of landscape and scope. It's a beautiful picture to watch, but not always one to entertain. However, hang with it through the first hour, and you'll be blown away by the crescendo of fear and violence Weir's film has reached.
