Three couples are meeting for a trip out to the country to have an old fashioned, American orgy. What instigated said orgy is mostly a mystery, as is what truly keeps them motivated to go through with it. Needless to say, most of them are in it for reasons beyond being carefree and their ulterior motives and inner demons will only spoil the party.
The pacing of this film is like that of an art film…which is code for saying it’s slow. This would not be a hindrance on the film if the mood of did not waver so often between being painfully uncomfortable and being curiously intriguing (more often the former). Some of the characters are perpetually unlikeable, while others are just so bland that one could hardly care enough to notice if they were likable or not. The last half of the film offers more for the audience as they inch closer to the moment of moving their relationships past casual friendship…and then when they do well beyond that, but that tension is all the film has going for it.
With a few humourous quips here and there it may strain a few chuckles from most audiences, but all in all it hardly has the legs to survive its full 96 minutes with only the promise of sex implied in the film’s title.
Video
Widescreen 2.35:1. Little to say about the picture. Things are pretty darn clear. In the commentary, the director mentions that it was shot one a Red one, and said camera does a very fine job capturing a clear picture. If this somehow got a blu ray release, I can see it being a pretty easy transfer to a good HD quality.
Audio
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound. With no score, and not much action, there is little use for the surround sounds aside from immersing the audience in the cabin setting. To that end, it does very well as each speaker has the clean and clear sounds of crickets chirping, frogs croaking, wind blowing and other token sounds of nature.
Special Features
Commentary: Delivered by a couple of the stars, Ted Beck (who also wrote the film) and Jordan Kessler. These guys don’t seem all that pumped to speak to us about the film, or at least they don’t have the natural charisma to make what intrest they have: interesting. All in all this is a boring and rather forgettable comment track.
Final Thoughts
The packaging tells us we’re in for an American Pie style sex romp, when really we’re in for a much more humble comedy than that. It is not a bad film per say, but it needs a lot more interesting elements (attributed to the characters mostly) to draw the audience in if it insists on maintaining such a slow pace.
