Synopsis
Jason Lee plays Paul who is engaged to Karen (Selma Blair), after his bachelor party he wakes up to one of the Tiki girls (Becky played by Julia Stiles) in bed with him, to make matters worse he discovers that she is his fiancée’s cousin. SO he does “The Guy Thing” and does everything he can to cover things up but, when Becky’s pscho ex starts stalking Paul things start to get out of hand.
Video
Presented in both a 1.85:1 anamorphic version and a 1.33:1 fullscreen …ersion the video transfer is well done. There are no issues with film grit, chroma noise or edge enhancement but, it is not exceptional either. Colors lack a little bit of punch and is a little soft looking overall, what else can you say about another decent transfer.
Audio
The audio on this disk comes across as somewhat flat, with a 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track it just lacks any real punch. The rears are seldom utilized and the rest of things are just kind of there, there are not really any issues with the sound just that it is not overly involving. Dialogue intelligibility is good but the bass track seems to be non-existent. Also included is a French 5.1 audio track, a Spanish 2.0 track and English, French and Spanish subtitles.
Special Features
The special features really turn this decent movie into a good disc. We start things off with an audio commentary featuring Chris Koch (director), Jason Lee, Julia Stiles, Selma Blair and Thomas Lennon that is funny and entertaining if somewhat overwhelming at times, with so many people sitting in for the commentary it can be somewhat difficult to follow along.
Next we have three making of featurettes the first of which is about the film as a whole and the second and third ones look at bachelor parties and the “groovy gravy” sequence from the film. Following these are seven deleted scenes with an introduction from the director for each one, a couple of these scenes are pretty good and could have been included in the film. There are three different alternate endings with again an introduction from Chris Koch the director of the film.
Another unique feature is the ability to watch the film with a “fun facts” track turned on that gives us quirky little bits of information that pop up as we watch the film, think pop-up video. Next we have a very funny gag reel, an interactive “Are we made for each other” quiz a behind the scenes picture gallery and the trailer for the film. Lastly we have four different trailers for different MGM films. Menus are above average motion menus with audio that are easy to navigate. Overall I found the special features to be a lot of fun to sit through and really enjoyed them.
Final Thoughts
Jason Lee made his acting debut in Kevin Smith’s Mallrats and while the film was not all that great he was very funny and basically carried the film. With A Guy Thing we once again end up in a similar situation, the difference being that here the film is actually pretty decent. We have a somewhat original storyline for a romantic comedy that is genuinely funny and entertaining (the “Groovy Gravy” scene is very funny) and unlike most romantic comedies it does not descend into overt sappiness at the end. Throw in a whack of entertaining extras and you have a nice little package for the collection that both men and women will enjoy.
