Synopsis
A rare glimpse inside a world rarely seen by outsiders we have the story of a young, brash captain (played by Matthew Modine) on a quest to reclaim the America’s Cup (that he lost) to an arrogant Australian (played by Jack Thompson). Entangled in the battle of wits on the water we also have a classic love story of two people separated by their own personal ambition and reunited by a shared dream.
Audio
I suspect that the original audio for this film was a simple …wo channel mix that really would not have done the racing sections of this film justice. Columbia Tri-Star has done a fabulous job giving this disk a very convincing and realistic sounding Dolby Digital soundtrack. When we are out on the ocean the sound is enveloping and convincing, it is lacking some of the very low bass but other then that it is very all-encompassing. Dialogue is intelligible and easy to understand even when out on the water with everything else that is going on.
Video
The film has been remastered in high definition and it shows, the image quality is exceptional. The colors of the boats really jump out and grab you, there is little to no grain and no noticeable edge enhancements. There also are no visible transfer artifacts, this is a reference quality film transfer.
Special features
The only special features to speak of are a couple of movie trailers (Wind, Dogtown and Z-boys and Vertical Limit). We have English and French subtitles and simple no motion menus.
Final Thoughts
With stunning cinematography that puts you in the middle of the ocean this movie will make you want to take up sailing (until you find out how much the boats are). The love story is pretty flakey but, they need something to tie things over until we get back on the ocean. The story line is fairly compelling and with excellent video and audio quality this disk is worth adding to your collection.
