Here at Upcomingdiscs 31 Nights Of Terror wouldn’t be the same without our buddies at Diabolik DVD. We don’t really push products or do much shilling here at the site. That’s not why you come here. These guys are the real deal. I know a lot of you are horror fans. You owe it to yourself to check these guys out. They have everything from mainstream horror to the rarest schlock. If you can’t find it there, you just can’t find it. Just click on the graphic to the right of the sight and be prepared to be taken to some wild places. On Dec 1st, 2008 after eight years working at Upcomingdiscs as a writer, I became the owner. It’s been 10 years, and in that time I’ve found a few ways to make my mark upon the site. In that time I was able to gather a wonderful local Tampa staff that has allowed the site to grow while freeing me to discover new ways to serve our faithful followers. We added an October Halloween celebration called 31 Nights Of Terror. We started to bring you interviews with the folks that work to make the films and television shows you guys love so much. We’ve tried to keep up with tributes to lost industry giants and provide you with a weekly roundup of what you can expect each week here at the ranch. We expanded our contests and giveaways by working hard to maintain good relationships with the studios that provide all of our review and contest material. Of course, those relationships never got in the way of honest reporting with every review we write. We were the first home entertainment site to bring you a UHD 4K review. I was invited to join the Southeastern Film Critics Association (SEFCA).  I managed to score a player before the guys at Best Buy had even seen one before. Every year I would ask you what we could do better. What changes you would like to see here at Upcomingdiscs. I have read each and every one of your answers. Most of you have been happy with our appearance, but it’s gotten a little old, and you deserve better. So I welcome you to the new look for Upcomingdiscs. In 2018 I was invited to join The Southeastern Film Critic Association (SEFCA). I was honored to join the group of professional critics and be a part of this year’s awards selection. It meant spending most of December watching films. It was a tough job, but somebody has to do it. I watched several films each day. On one particular December day I managed to view seven films. You can buy blockbuster films on disc from almost anywhere these days. But if you’re looking for classic and vintage stuff, it gets a little bit harder. If you’re looking for obscure or foreign horror and science fiction titles, it can get near impossible. I say near impossible because there’s a place online that is staffed by the same kind of film fans that we are. They have the largest supply of niche films I’ve ever encountered, and they’ve supplied our staff at Upcomingdiscs many times with that special hard-to-get title. I often get emails asking me where to find some unknown title. I always give the same answer. If you can’t find it at Diabolik DVD, I don’t like your chances finding it anywhere. At the turn of the millennium a decade and a half ago, lists were pretty popular. It didn’t matter if you were into the world of sports or movies, everybody was looking for the all-time best of everything. The American Film Institute got into the trend by releasing top-100 lists. Heroes, villains and memorable quotes all got the treatment. We all argued about the “classics” we felt were unfairly slighted and the “idiotic” choices that did make the lists. If only the lists were so much larger. Then everyone’s favorites would be included and we could all finally find a list we could agree on. But, what number would that be? 100 was too small. A million was just too large. What number might be just right? 1001?

If you live in the Tampa Bay area you should already know about Tampa Theatre. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to catch a film. It doesn’t matter if you’re into classic cinema or the latest art film. This is the place to go. The wonderful spires and classic trimmings make it the most atmospheric place to be. Organ music still entertains the crowds here. If you’re into horror films you can’t beat the mix of atmosphere and haunts. Then there’s the movies. Check out their October slate of films and events. Forget everything we’ve said about these guys. It’s not often that we have to admit we were wrong here at Upcomingdiscs. This is one such time. We said good things about the program. I thought I’d finally found a good movie database, the Holy Grail of the industry. Well… it works fine….for a short time. In less than a year it’s been pretty much broken and they’ll charge you all over again to get a working version. What is wasted is your original money and the time you spent entering your films. For us that meant literally thousands of titles. Save your money and stay far away from this one. I’ll keep looking for a good program. When we offer a recommendation, we want you to be able to count on it.

Bolide Software’s attempt to hook you on a never-ending money grab isn’t what you’re looking for. There’s got to be a great database software out there. I promise you. We will find it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

It turns out that 13 is going to be your lucky number this Halloween. The folks at Busch Gardens are celebrating their 13th year of Howl-O-Scream and it appears they’ve created an eerie night of spooks and spectaculars for your fright. Upcomingdiscs will be there for all of the action and we’ll be reporting back in early October.

In the meantime, yours truly was invited to sneak into the bowels of the park at 2:00 AM just a few days ago. No, I didn’t have to climb over the walls or outrun the Cheetahs. It was all part of a media night invitation to preview one of the new haunted houses for Howl-O-Scream. It was a blast, to be sure. Best of all, they’ve captured my descent into Oglethorpe Asylum where “The Creature” is stirring and he isn’t a mouse. JEREMY IRVINE (Albert Narracott) makes his feature-film debut in “War Horse.”

Currently in production on BBC Films’ “Great Expectations,” in which he stars as Pip, the classic Dickens story is directed by Mike Newell and includes Academy Award® winner Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter. He recently completed production on the independent feature “Now Is Good,” opposite Dakota Fanning, based on Jenny Downham’s novel “Before I Die.” Irvine will next begin shooting “The Railway Man” opposite Colin Firth.
