Welcome to this week’s monster-iffic Tuesday Round Up! We kick things off with Universal going back for a second round of robots vs. kaiju butt-kicking with Pacific Rim: Uprising (4K) and trying not to go too crazy with Unsane (4K). And while calling Scrooge McDuck a monster is probably a bit strong, the penny-pinching quackster and his nephews get into some hot water in Duck Tales: Destination Adventure. In less monstrous news, Lionsgate puts the petal to the medal with Flower and Warner Bros. kicks things into high gear with soccer-centric family film Alex & Me.
The end of the week brings the biggest (and certainly oldest) monsters of them all. We’ll have a dino-tastic review of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Summer continues to heat up, and so does our weekly Tuesday Round Up! This week’s crop of releases features action, comedy…and titles that contain plenty of both! Warner Bros. goes digging for adventure with Tomb Raider (4K), the big-screen reboot of the mega-popular videogame franchise. If you’re looking for laughs AND action, Paramount has you covered by releasing the Eddie Murphy one-two punch of Trading Places and Coming to America on Blu-ray and the Jerry Lewis 10-Film Collection before changing gears and giving everyone’s favorite time-travelling killer cyborg a UHD makeover with Terminator: Genisys (4K). And if you want to watch a really nice guy run for a long time, Paramount is also releasing a little movie called Forrest Gump (4K). Universal keeps the laughs coming with Will & Grace — The Revival: Season 1, but also gets scary with The Strangers: Prey at Night. Last but not least, Fox injects some romance into the week with teen dramedy Love, Simon.
Of course, I couldn't go on and on about all this great action and great comedy without mentioning the sequel to a movie that did both at the highest level: later this week, we’ll have a review for Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles 2. On top of that, Warner Bros. tries to avoid being “it” with Tag, while Focus Features throws on a cardigan and revisits beloved icon Mister Rogers with Won’t You Be My Neighbor. For this week's busy Round Up, we're going down to a certain fictional Colorado town and having ourselves a time. Paramount/Comedy Central releases South Park: Season 21 this week, and it's sure to both offend and crack you up. Elsewhere, Warner Bros. finds romance each and Every Day, while Cult Epics becomes acquainted with Frank & Lola. Cinedigm follows the yellow brick road with Steam Engines of Oz, while SKO looks at things from a new angle with Altered Perception. Meanwhile, Film Movement travels to Japan for unconventional romance Oh Lucy! and quiets down with The Great Silence. Rooster Teeth gets animated with RWBY: Volume 5, while Shout! Factory stands out in a fabulous way with Freak Show. Finally, Disney goes on an interdimensional adventure with A Wrinkle in Time and learns how to fly with Peter Pan: Multi-Screen Edition. If you've visited this website at any point this century, you know the name Gino Sassani. Gino is the senior editor/fearless leader of Upcomingdiscs.com and an award-winning recording artist for Omega Records currently working on his 8th album. Please join us in congratulating him on his latest accolade: Gino was recently voted into the Southeastern Film Critics Association (SEFCA).
SEFCA members publish their work or live in Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Gino began reviewing films in the early 1990s as a segment of his local television show, “Focus.” Working out of his home theater, which is affectionately known as “The Reel World,” Gino has written over 3,000(!) reviews since he joined the site in 2000. Gino has had the honor of chatting with a diverse group of industry giants — ranging from Joe Dante to Ice Cube — and has posted the interviews, along with dozens of others, as podcasts on the site.

We are breaking the bank with this week's Round Up! Well...not us exactly. I think we'll leave the actual criminal activity to the dangerous crooks and elite cops who clash in Den of Thieves, Universal's action/drama sleeper hit. Elsewhere, Shout! Factory pages Doctor Detroit, Liongate offers some lessons in Backstabbing for Beginners, IndiePix gets some shuteye with Henry Miller Asleep & Awake, and Time Life hosts a star-studded jam session with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert. Meanwhile, Fox and National Geographic kick off their anthology series with the most famous smarty-pants of them all, Genius: Einstein.
Oh, and there is one more thing...a little later this week, we'll be posting our review of a scrappy little underdog flick that goes by the name of Avengers: Infinity War. (Here's hoping it finds an audience.) Looks like the hellraising bad guys of DC’s Suicide Squad didn’t wreak quite enough havoc during their recent big screen debut. The butt-kicking, wisecracking villains are back this week — in animated form — thanks to Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay (4K). Elsewhere, Lionsgate gets in on the action with Braven (starring Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa) and Western adventure Gone are the Days. Meanwhile, Paramount tries to find itself with Tad the Lost Explorer and the Secret King Midas and tokes up with the Cheech and Chong stoner classic Up in Smoke. Finally, Hugh Jackman and Co. sing and dance their way into our living room with Fox’s The Greatest Showman (4K).

After last week's jam-packed Round Up, we decided it might be a good idea to downsize. More specifically, we'll be reviewing Paramount's inventive satire Downsizing in 4K. (The film stars Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, and others.) Meanwhile, Universal does it vocal exercises in preparation for Pitch Perfect 3 (4K), the final(?) chapter in the popular aca-trilogy. Elsewhere, Fox stylishly travels back in time for Archer: Season 8 (Dreamland), while Shout! Factory goes north of the border to answer When Calls the Heart: The Heart of Homecoming.

“We have to be ready. You, me, the others… there’s an attack coming from far away.”
The DC and Marvel rivalry can be quite fierce at times. I never completely understood the polarized fan base, however. Some of us are just fans of the genre and will welcome a good comic book movie from either and preferably both studios. When it comes to a cinematic universe, however DC has had some real issues with trying to bring together a combined hero world. Most of the films leading up to Justice League have been dark and filled with brooding heroes. With Batman that kind of thing is appropriate and works. With Superman it has been a severe letdown. When the two came together in Batman v Superman, the disappointment started to lead to a resigned conviction that DC was doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. Then came Wonder Woman, and it was no surprise that she was the single standout of the caped-hero duel. Wonder Woman, both the character and the film, appear to have changed something in the DC landscape, and she is, once again, the single most hopeful character in Justice League. And while Justice League isn’t quite the movie that Wonder Woman was, there are signs that things are changing. Justice League is not a great movie. But it’s not a bad film, either. Superman actually smiles and has begun to return to the “golly” innocence of his best comic years. This film may not be everything we fans of both brands were hoping for, but it’s actually a good start.

You can't save the world alone. You also can't properly kick off your week without knowing what Blu-ray/4K/DVD releases are on the horizon. I'm sure you've probably guessed this by now, but one of the titles being released this week is Warner Bros. superstar-laden superhero smackdown Justice League, which we'll be reviewing both on Blu-ray and in 4K. It's also case closed for Warner as they release Major Crimes: The Sixth and Final Season. Elsewhere, Indiepix is feeling spirited thanks to Pastor Paul, while MPI Home Video delves into the life of famous cop Frank Serpico. CBS/Paramount fights The Good Fight: Season 1, and Cinedigm searches for love When the Starlight Ends. (FYI: you can win a free copy of When the Stralight Ends.) Last and certainly not least, Lionsgate shuffles into the mix with Fear the Walking Dead: Season 3.
