In 2018 I was invited to join The Southeastern Film Critic Association (SEFCA). I was honored to join the group of professional critics and be a part of this year's awards selection. It meant spending most of December watching films. It was a tough job, but somebody has to do it. I watched several films each day. On one particular December day I managed to view seven films. Now the voting is finished, and it's time for the envelope, please...

Runner-Up: The Favourite

Hooked On Hollywood by Leonard Maltin. All of us here at Upcomingdiscs love movies. We love them enough to take on the role of film critics. Leonard Maltin is one of those icons that the rest of us look to for inspiration. His reviews, books and articles on Hollywood span over 50 years. his latest book Hooked On Hollywood has two parts. The first half of the book recall some of his favorite old-time Hollywood stories. The second half features his interviews over the years with some of the legends in the business. It's the kind of book that belongs on the shelf of every film lover. Goodknight Books has been generous enough to provide a copy for us to give away.

It seems like we've been giving away one of these prizes every year for a long time. We have a copy of the complete 2018 World Series Collector's Edition. It includes all 5 games of the 2018 World Series plus game 4 of the ALDS and game 5 of the ALCS. This is a must-have for Boston Red Sox fans. It's all on Blu-ray in HD. That's 22 hours of championship baseball. There's also always the bonus prize. The single-disc version of this series goes to a person who adds my favorite football team in their answer. One contest. Maybe 2 winners. It's all thanks to our friends at Shout Factory.

We just closed our contest to give away 4 Film Movement Plus Annual Memberships and we'll be giving another 4 away next month. But that's not all they stuffed into our stockings here at Upcomingdiscs. We have 3 copies of The Great Silence on Blu-ray to give away now. Brent reviewed the film a while back. You can bang it here for that review: The Great Silence Review. For those of you who like to have cold hard discs in your hands (like me) this one's for you and it's all thanks to Film Movement.

The folks at Mill Creek Entertainment have given us a ton of stuff to give away this year. I'm going to start things off with one of my favorite shows of all time. I'm talking The Rockford Files starring the late-great James Garner. When I was a kid, there was no one as cool as Jim Rockford. I got in trouble at school once when a nun asked me what it would take for me to do my homework. My reply was a smug: "$200 a day plus expenses". It got a great laugh from the class and three days of detention for yours truly. But it was worth it. Now you can own the entire series on Blu-ray thanks to our friends at Mill Creek Entertainment. It won't even cost you any time in detention. All six seasons re-mastered in HD. This is one of our best prizes ever.

Cinedigm is offering us River Runs Red on UHD-Blu-ray. That's 4K for all of our film fans out there. The film stars Taye Diggs as the father of a young man shot by corrupt police officers. When he can't get justice through the system where he's a respected judge, he teams up with George Lopez who also lost a son to the same cops. They get their revenge in a bloody confrontation. You can own it in 4K. Be sure you have a 4K television with HDR and a UHD player to enjoy this film.

"Predators don't just sit around making hats out of rib cages. They conquered space."

In 1987 Predator became somewhat of a milestone film for many reasons. The movie would anchor a franchise, thanks mostly to a wonderfully original Stan Winston creature design and the performance of Kevin Peter Hall under the suit. Both Winston and Hall have since passed, but the alien hunter that they created together is still going strong. The film also featured two stars who would later go on to become governors of their states. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jessie Ventura made their mark in politics. The film also featured Rocky's Carl Weathers. It also featured Shane Black in a small role that might not have contributed to the blossoming franchise then, but he has made his own impact by writing and directing the latest installment of that franchise The Predator.
