"It's opening up all kinds of doors."

Alcatraz Prison was one of the country's most secure facilities for over 60 years. It was built on a rocky island off San Francisco. You couldn't dig through the rock, and the surrounding ocean was cold and heavily populated by sharks big enough to feed off the plentiful seal population. For 60 years no one had successfully escaped the prison. That record was broken in June of 1962 when three inmates, brothers Clarence and John Anglin, escaped with Frank Morris, who was believed to have masterminded the plot. Sixty years later the case remains officially open, and no one knows what happened to the three men. In 1963 J. Campbell Bruce wrote a non-fiction book called Escape From Alcatraz. The book attempted to document all of the serious attempts to escape the prison, which of course included the 1962 escape. The book also called attention to some of the conditions of the prison and was a part of the reason it shut down completely just a year after publication of the book.

I certainly do not want to get political here, but cops as a rule have a certain extent of power that we as common folk typically do not enjoy.  It is often a plot point in many thriller movies that we sit and watch the officer harasses suspects or perhaps uses some shady tactics in order to get their man (or woman).  It's common, heck it's probably in film school 101 and some might even see it as a bit cliché.  Today's film is Unidentified, a Romanian film where a detective enters a very grey area in order to catch the perpetrator.  It's also the first film in a trilogy.  Yes, you read that right but more on that later.  Let's take a look.

We see the sprawling countryside of Romania.  It shifts to trees and then to lots of houses and businesses.  We arrive at the city, time is 2:45 PM and Florin Iespas (played by Bogdan Farcas) is looking at some grisly photographs of burn victims along with a picture of a suspect.  At the bosses office, he talks to Comisar Sef (played by Vasile Muraru) about the case which actually doesn't belong to him.  The case belongs to another cop named Radu who happens to be away on a vacation.

Many people will agree to disagree on the existence of ghosts.  It is probably easier to agree on the point that if those ghosts do exist, they were wronged in some fashion, or there is something left to their story that is unsolved.  That mystery is what makes the concept of ghosts so fascinating.  Today, we have another GKids anime production, this time by the genius loundraw.  It's called Summer Ghost.  Let's take a trip into the paranormal.

It has been about 36 years since the release of the first Top Gun. This is one of my earliest memories as a kid, seeing the movie on the big screen with my parents at the old Main Street 6 Cinemas. I was a bit obsessed with this movie growing up. I had a copy of the film that I had recorded off of Showtime, and over the years I’d imagine I’ve seen Top Gun at least 100 times. I was obsessed with the movie and its soundtrack. Kenny Loggins and “Danger Zone” lived rent free in my head throughout my childhood.  I know I’m not alone on this when saying just how much Top Gun is a movie I just love. It’s not perfect, but I just can’t find anything I dislike about it. Even in my forties, I look at this film as comfort food. It doesn’t matter the time of day; if it’s on, I can’t help but sit down and watch it. I’m putting this out there because yeah, when I heard about the talks of them first doing a sequel I was excited, but I wasn’t too optimistic.  Then when Tony Scott died in 2012, I thought for sure that was the nail in the coffin for any potential new Top Gun film. Ten years later, after over two years of delays, Top Gun: Maverick is finally hitting the big screen.  After all these years and all the hype, is it worth the wait?

In case you haven’t realized it, Hollywood has been riding the wave of nostalgia for a while now.  Just this week alone, Disney Plus is debuting the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Netflix is releasing the new season of Stranger Things (that alone is borderline 80s nostalgia porn at its best), and then we have Top Gun: Maverick.  This week is simply old school pop-culture on steroids week and a reminder why it’s a good time to be alive as a cinephile.  It’s important to keep all this in mind, because when you go in to the theaters to see Top Gun: Maverick, you are not just simply getting to see a new movie, but it’s also a nostalgic trip back to the first film that will leave you excited and at times maybe a little misty-eyed reuniting with these characters we first met so many years ago.

“We’re in his territory now.” 

Given the film’s premise, this strikes me as the perfect tagline for the film. A family on safari finds themselves trapped and stalked by a lion with a bloodlust. It definitely evokes memories of the Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas-led 1996 film, The Ghost and the Darkness. In this instance, of course, they rely on the acting chops of Idris Elba to keep the film from descending into cliché. And while there are some situations that seem avoidable and unrealistic, the film did a great job of maintaining my interest for the duration. Joining Elba is Sharlto Copley, another talent with an extensive resume. My only gripe about Copley is that he felt underutilized, and I felt there were intriguing developments with his character that if fleshed out would have added a greater degree of depth to his character. However, this of course was out of Copley’s control and in no way negatively impacts his given performance. Just one of those things that results when you only have a limited amount of time to tell a complete story. Despite this, I still found Beast enjoyable and recommend the experience. I mean, come on, Idris Elba vs. a lion; that’s worth the price of admission in itself.

I am a big sucker for police procedural and detective shows.  Once upon a time, I religiously watched CSI (and CSI: Miami), and these days I am watching various episodes of true crime series like Real Detective and Homicide Hunter on a weekly basis (the only other thing I tend to watch weekly is wrestling).   It translates over to movies, naturally, as well.  Well, today's film takes me into the world of a motorcycle cop who wishes to be a detective and then falls upon a murder case.  Sounds like a must-watch to me. Let's take a look at Electra Glide in Blue.

"For those of you who are wondering who this fella here is, I am the legendary Colonel Tom Parker. I am the man who gave the world Elvis Presley. Without me, there would be no Elvis Presley. And yet, there are some who'd make me out to be the villain of this here story. No, no, I didn't kill him. I made Elvis Presley. Nothing all those muckrakers said in their books was true. Me and Elvis, we was partners. It was Elvis the Showman and the Colonel the Snowman. I always knew I was destined for greatness. As an orphan, I ran away to the carnival, where I learned the art of the "snow job," of emptying a rube's wallet while leaving them with nothing but a smile on their face. But a carnival act that would get you the most money, the most snow, had great costumes and a unique trick, that gave the audience feelings they weren't sure they should enjoy. But they do. And I knew if I could find such an act, I could create the greatest ... show ... on ... Earth."

Rock bio-pictures have been pretty hot as of late. It really started with the exceptionally done Bohemian Rapsody that chronicled the rise of the band Queen, and more its flamboyant front man, Freddie Mercury. In its wake have come lesser films that have still performed well at the box office, like Elton John's Rocketman, which turned out to be more fantasy than bio-film. With a subject like Elvis, it's really hard to go wrong. He's one of the most successful brands in rock history, and make no mistake. He was a brand. He was also more than just a flash of style. Elvis Presley is often referred to as The King Of Rock And Roll, at least to his fans. There's no denying the impact that he had on the music scene. He was the first rock and roll star, to be sure. Colonel Tom Parker, his long-time manager and partner, created many of the marketing traditions that are commonplace in the industry today. He knew the value of his star, not only as a performer, but as a brand. For the first time, a musician's image and name started to appear on everything from bath towels to women's underwear. Fans are often split on their feelings for the self-styled Colonel, but Elvis would not have become the name brand he still is today without him. That doesn't take away the selfish way that Parker turned Elvis into his private meal ticket, paying attention to his own needs more than those of his star. But no one marketed a brand like Parker did in the days before Elvis. One of those brand expansions tapped into Elvis's own boyhood fantasy. Elvis had worked as an usher at a local movie theater as a teen. He's often related that he would linger in the auditoriums, watching those movies and fantasizing that he was James Dean or Marlon Brando, two of his idols. With the help if Colonel Parker, Elvis would get to see that dream become a reality. The King was to expand his realm to include the movie business and Hollywood. No experience? No problem. After all, if Elvis could go from failing music in high school to becoming the highest paid musician on the planet, he could certainly tackle the world of acting. And he did just that. And that's really the first "issue" with the film. It might be called ELVIS all in caps, but this is really Colonel Tom Parker's story, and in case you have any confusion on that score, it will become clear soon enough. You see, the entire film is narrated by Parker and told from his unique point of view.

The people of Taiwan have been searching for an identity for a long time.  When martial law was lifted over the People's Republic of China in the 1980's and shifted to a more democratic form, the people have increasingly wanted their own identity and no longer to be known as a part of China.  Sure, they might maintain the status quo and appear to work with China (which hasn't been exactly the case lately), but they strive to be known as Taiwanese, separate from the mainland influence.  Our film today, Vive L'Amour, takes place in the 1990's Taiwan, where life was extremely hard for the average young adult.   So hard that many of them didn't even have a permanent residence.

We open to see a key is left in the door of a dwelling.  Nearby a salesman named Hsiao-kang (played by Lee Kang-sheng) finishes up a door-to-door sales call and after a few moments decides to take the key.  He goes to the convenience store, grabs a water, and sees a camera where he adjusts his hair.  The next scene, he is driving on his motorcycle and arrives at the location where he grabbed the key from.  He starts to unlock the door, hears sounds from inside, and quickly leaves.

My fascination with tennis has come in spots throughout the early part of my life.  In the 1980's, I was fascinated by John McEnroe with his brilliant play and fiery emotion.  In the 1990's I was smitten with Jennifer Capriati, but also impressed by her tenacity at such a young age.  I still remembering listening to the broadcast of Goran Ivanisevic finally winning at Wimbledon in the early 2000's.  And that's where I stopped watching, really, still eager to see the amazing game play, but no longer finding the characters I so desperately wanted to look for.  Today's film is Final Set, which follows an aging tennis player who has one final shot at becoming the player he always learned to be.

A good erotic movie is actually harder than it sounds.  Sure, you have to have skin, word play, arousal, and yes, that other kind of play.  But the good erotic films like Basic Instinct, 9 1/2 Weeks, and Embrace of the Vampire (You thought I was going to say Fatal Attraction, didn't you?) are very entertaining and have a story that draws you in to keep you there even when the spicy bits aren't on the screen.  Today's erotic film is Curiosa, which certainly hits all of the skin elements, but does it have a story that I would want to watch again and again?  Let's check it out.

A curiosa is an erotic object, book, or photograph.  We start the movie with a little photography as we watch our two main characters, Pierre Louys (played by Niels Schneider), who is taking pictures of Marie de Heredia (played by Noemie Merlant).  Marie is set to marry Henri de Regnier (played by Benjamin Lavernhe), but she does not love him.   She is actually in love with Pierre, who is Henri's best friend as well.
