"Nothing wrong with a good diversion." 

As I write this review for the latest entry in the DC Animated Universe, the nation is going through a tough time. When terms like social distancing are becoming the norm, it's nice to know that there's stuff out there to help keep us from going stir crazy as we become more and more restricted to our homes. Box office films have been delayed, and some of the current films are being brought out sooner on home entertainment platforms to try to ease the isolation a little. While never slated for a theatrical release, one of the better titles to come out during this time is Warner Brothers' Superman: Red Son. It's a story that was told about 10 years ago in an animated film, but this one takes advantage of new technology and a multi-film story that has driven the last few years of animated feature releases. This isn't merely a retread, but something far closer to the original comics story and provides a rather thoughtful as well as entertaining diversion just when we might need it the most.

“This is a vile waste of taxpayer dollars.” 

Will Smith and Tom Holland team up for an animated spy movie; talk about a draw for the crowd. This premise alone was enough to get me and my daughter drawn into the movie. Of course there is a bit more to it, as it also involves Will Smith’s character being accidentally turned into a pigeon. An interesting twist of fate, but honestly, I think it would have been great if it just stayed a straight spy film, without the pigeon addition. Not to say that the film wasn’t still a success with this addition, because as it is the film tackles a very critical subject matter: the use of violence. Who said that a feature film can’t impart an important life lesson, especially with a younger audience? Granted, I did have to spell it out a bit for my daughter, but she’s eight; what are you gonna do? In addition to Smith and Holland, who is making a name for himself in the world of voiceover animation, the cast is rounded out with familiar faces, or should I say voices, such as Ben Mendelsohn, Karen Gillan, Rashida Jones, Reba McEntire, and DJ Khaled.

It's been six years since Frozen became somewhat of a surprise hit out of Walt Disney Studios in 2013. No one was surprised it made a good haul at the box office, but I suspect that even the masterminds at Disney never saw this billion-dollar baby when it was first being born. It's become the biggest original hit out of Disney since the original Lion King set animated feature records in the 90's. I'll give the studio credit. They didn't rush out and try to cash in on the momentum as quickly as other studios would have. They took their time and assembled the same team of directors and songwriters and allowed the process to follow a six-year process with the intent of doing it right rather than doing it fast. For the most part I think that strategy paid off, and while this film will never be the classic the original has become, it will fit rather snugly into the franchise and will delight children, while possibly cursing the adults who are fated to watch the film over and over again. This is absolutely one of those kinds of movies.

It all starts in the past where we spy young Elsa and Anna playfully getting ready for bed. The King puts them to bed with a story out of the kingdom's past. He regales them with how their grandfather met the people of an enchanted forest who had magical powers over the four elements of land, fire, air and water. They are told of the great gift of peace their grandfather gave these people in the form of a huge dam. It all turns nasty when the story continues to tell of a peaceful gathering where the people of the enchanted forest suddenly attack the people of Arendelle. The elements were so angered by the act of betrayal that they separated the kingdoms and enshrouded the enchanted forest with an impenetrable fog that has isolated the forest ever since.

Getting thrown into the middle of a film or television series is a daunting task, especially when you can't just reach out and grab the source material.  For example, today's review are three films that are set after a manga book collection as well as a 13-episode television series that is available on Blu-ray, but by another production house and would cost me thirty bucks.  Hardly an ideal situation, but one I wasn't going to back down from.  Donten: Laughing Under the Clouds - Gaiden is our review today and tries to tell us in nearly three hours what happens after the Yamainu take down the Orochi and the struggle to lead normal lives in the wake of such a cataclysmic event.

Film One: One Year After the Battle -

A common thread in fairy tales and stories of long ago is for there to be a perfect female that is amazingly romanced by a not-so perfect male.  In fact, he is usually average, clueless, and clumsy beyond belief.  During the narrative, we realize that the female is only perfect on the outside and is somehow flawed on the inside.  In the end, they live happily ever after.  The story changes sometimes in details, genders, and other minor pieces of information, but is overall the same in theme.  Today, we explore White Snake, which is a prequel to the Chinese fable, Legend of the White Snake.  Let's take a look.

Feathers fall to the earth and sea; a giant snake slithers along the ground below.  The reptile goes behind a rock, and out the other side comes a beautiful girl named Blanca.  She starts to float and then chants magic words as she falls into white nothingness.  Strings with hands reach out to grab her from all sides and she struggles to break free.

One of my main pet peeves in my life are the people who seem to hang on a celebrity's every word, or worse, a reluctant celebrity who gets pushed into the limelight because of a heroic deed or misdeed.  I have little desire to be famous (except to be published and recognized as a writer), but if I were, I am pretty sure I would labelled as a recluse and shun the public eye constantly.  Today, we explore Summer Days with Coo, a tale about a Kappa who is found by a boy after centuries of being fossilized. Then suddenly he gets thrust into the limelight with some unfavorable results.  Let us see what this one has to offer.

As we open, we hear a young kid ask his father about dragons.  The father talks about the creature, saying they are scary but are good sorts.  We then see the kid and his father and realize they are Kappas, water spirits or demons depending on your point of view.  Suddenly they hear a noise and realize that Lord Shimizu is coming their way.  The father tells the son to hide while he talks to the human.

“They're creepy and they're kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They're altogether ooky, The Addams Family.” 

That is for those who read my Addams Family double feature post regarding the Addams Family theme song. Of course that is merely the first verse of the song. Have no fear, as the animated film features the full version. It must be kismet, as I had the privilege of reviewing the animated film so soon after reviewing the double feature, though I suspect that this was by design. Though this cartoon does not fit the traditional view of what a horror film is, I would argue that the subject matter is more than enough to grant it entry. Featuring a lighter tone than its subject material, this incarnation is an enjoyable experience that can be shared with the whole family, which was my experience as I was able to bring my daughter to the film with me, and I’m happy to say it got her stamp of approval.

I think most people have had the fantasy of what a film of their life would look like through the camera lens.  The high points, the low moments, and everything in between.  Perhaps it would be boring (probably most of us), or just perhaps it would be brimming with excitement.  Whatever the situation, we just hope that somebody else would find it interesting or at least star our favorite actor or actress.  Today, we bring to you a review of an anime that tells the story of Chiyoko Fujiwara, an experienced actress, through one filmmaker Genya Tachibana's passion and the lens of  his cameraman, Kyoji Ida.

We are in space where a female astronaut says her goodbyes as her crew pleads with her not to go.  The countdown starts.  The screen shifts back to Genya Tachibana, who is watching this presentation, which we now realize is a film staring the great Chiyoko Fujiwara.  An earthquake shakes the film room  where Genya is watching.  It stops after a minute, and Kyoji Ida comes in and tells him that they need to go.  The filmmaker gets up and starts to follow.  He stops and then decides to rewind the tape he was watching.  As he leaves, we watch the monitor display various moments of Chiyoko's film career.  Cue credits and emotional music.

We are back with another collector's edition from Shout Factory.  This time we tackle the much celebrated Spirited Away, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, which was released in 2001, when it did so well that it ended up on our domestic shores in the following year.  It was absolutely adored by critics, and here is a fun fact.  I have never seen it.  Little did I know that the American trailers I was seeing around this time were warping my idea of what the film was really about.  Finally, after all of these years I have had the opportunity to watch and digest such a fantastic film.

Chihiro, a ten-year-old girl, is trying to relax in the back of her parents' car.  They are on their way to a new city, with a new school, and the young girl is having none of it.  As they search for the house where they are going to live, the father decides to use his four-wheel-drive and take off into the forest in hopes of making a shortcut.  But rather than finding their new house, they end up at a long building with a dark tunnel that appears to go somewhere exciting according to the parents.

"From the day we arrive on the planet, and blinking, step into the sun, there's more to see than can ever be seen. More to do than can ever be done. There's far too much to take in here. More to find than can ever be found..."

There's a period in the 1990's that has often been referred to as the second golden age of Disney animation. The studio had fallen from its once mighty perch, and most film historians tend to agree there was a creative dark ages through the 1980's. But the renaissance of the studio began with Aladdin in 1992 would go on to include such tremendous classics as Beauty And The Beast and The Little Mermaid. None of these films speak to the resurgence of the animated feature like The Lion King. The film set every animated record there was and holds some of those box office records today. It can be safely stated that the great flood of animated projects that followed can be traced to the impact of The Lion King. In 1996 Simba was the most popular name chosen for new housecats. Elton John saw his appeal extend to children, and there could be no mistake that the animated feature was back. That's the legacy of The Lion King.
