Overall this 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is very sharp. There are no issues with edge enhancement or damages to the print. The quality of the animation is just not really up to snuff; the backgrounds look soft and very separated from the cell animation. Overall this is a very good transfer of an OK piece of animation.
Audio
In typical Disney fashion we have both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks. Either one are of almost equal quality with the DTS providing slightly better bass and a more spacious sound. Dialogue is clean and intelligible; the front image is nice and wide with good special cues. Rear channels are used seldom but sound very good when they are used, as well bass is not called for often but it is OK sounding. Overall the audio is better them average but not in keeping with the best available.
Special Features
The extras kick off with a couple of games for the kids, we have Dr. Jumba’s experiment finder and Dr. Hamsterviel’s trivia. Next we move on to the experiment gallery where we can look at fun facts for 24 different experiments. Next up is a music video for “Aloha, E Komo Mai” that will have the kids jumping around the living room. Lastly we have a number of trailers for Disney’ titles like Finding Nemo. Brother Bear and Lilo and Stitch the TV series. Menus are animated and scored with featuring all of the characters form the film. An OK special features package that will keep the kids busy for a couple of hours.
Final Thoughts
Typically Disney direct to video releases have been below average titles but, this one is a surprise the story is good and the new characters are funny. The special features are decent and the video and audio are up to par as well. This is a disc that the kids will enjoy and parents will not dread having to watch repeatedly.
