Synopsis
Acclaimed trumpeter Chris Botti is joined on stage by his band and friends (Sting and Shawn Colvin) for a night of evocative and sensual music. Filmed on location in the historic El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on December 3, 2001. Chris Botti’s regular gig is as the trumpet player for Sting both on tour and in the studio, this show is to celelbrate the release of his solo album with Comlumbia records.
Audio
The audio on this disc is excellent; it is 5.1 surround with…warm detailed sound and deep punchy bass. The surrounds are used to good effect for ambiance and crowd sounds. A highlight of the audio is that avoids the pitfalls of a lot of live recordings and is not overly bright, there is a perfect balance in the treble of open and detailed sound with out any hint of brassiness.
Video
Image quality is the only real disappointment on this disk as it is grainy soft and somewhat muted. This is really too bad as this is otherwise an excellent disc.
Special Features
This disc features interviews with Chris Botti, Sting and Shawn Colvin, as well as a video profile of Chris. Also included are a decent still gallery, a 5.1 audio only recording version of Through an Open Window and a biography. The extra features are great especially if you do not know who Chris Botti is.
Final Thoughts
One of the things that I enjoy the most about the DVD format is concert DVDs. I am a huge audio buff and enjoy watching well done discs from my favorite musical acts. This is a great disc that is really only held back by the poor video quality. Otherwise it is league with some of the best musical DVD’s on the market today, if you liked Diana Krall-Live in Paris you will really enjoy this disc and I heartly recommend it.
