“I just need you to not freak anybody out tonight.”

Flower ends up being a pretty strong reflection of its promiscuous protagonist: both the movie and the anti-heroine at its center are sharp, profane, a little all-over-the place, and contain a surprising undercurrent of emotion. The movie is a polarizing experience, to be sure, but I enjoyed going on this particular wild, unpredictable ride.

I think it’s a fair assumption to say the DTV market for film is pretty much the best it has ever been in regards to securing talent to star in the films.  When you look at a film like Bent and its cast of Karl Urban (Dredd), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and the great Andy Garcia (The Godfather 3, and my personal favorite Things to do in Denver When You’re Dead), it’s difficult to not get excited over its potential.  To sweeten the pot, the film’s director, Bobby Moresco, has produced two films that have best picture Oscar nominations, so one has to wonder, what went wrong?  I’m not saying the film is bad, but instead you’d just expect this film to be in another tier and not simply settling with a soft release in the new release section at Wal-Mart.    There doesn’t seem to be much buzz for this film, but it also seems that unless you’re a film that is a film festival darling or a big-budget blockbuster, it’s hard to generate any attention towards the smaller releases, and that seems to be where Bent has fallen.  With so many titles and numerous platforms releasing content, it’s simply not enough to just be good, but if you want to make waves and attract an audience you need to be something special, and unfortunately Bent just doesn’t deliver the goods.

The film starts off with a man watching a loved one climb into a car that is set to explode once the ignition is turned.  There’s nothing wrong with this start, and it does a good job at setting up the viewer to want to know more, but the film has other plans and instead thrusts us into the story about Danny Gallagher (Urban), who is a disgraced cop who is sent to prison after a sting goes bad that results in a cop getting killed.  After serving his time, Gallagher has one thing on his mind, and it’s to get payback against the person responsible for putting him behind bars.  Garcia plays his mentor, who tries to help Gallagher put these thoughts of revenge aside and instead try to rekindle his romance with Kate (Grace Byers), a singer and bar owner who lost her bar while he was serving time.  While it would make sense for Danny to pursue his love interest and keep his life on the straight and narrow, going this route also doesn’t lead to a compelling film.

Like probably most folk out there in the real world, I learned everything I know about foreign diplomats from television and film. They dress in expensive suits, usually have a drinking or smoking problem, and harbor some immense secret that could bring about the fall of a whole country or even the world. They don't have friends or associates, instead they have pawns that they move around a theoretical chess board for influence and money. Finally, they would sell out their own grandmother if it meant a little more information at the bargaining table. Today, I review Backstabbing for Beginners, a movie that deals with UN Diplomats and the country of Iraq. Somehow, I don't think my opinion is going to change.

The New York skyline, September 2003. We are at the Wall Street Journal building and Michael Sullivan (played by Theo James) has a story to tell. We fade to black and then see an Iraqi propaganda piece before arriving at the United Nations Building in October of 2002. Michael has been called in for an interview, actually the fourth time he's tried to find work as a diplomat.

Lin Oeding has been involved with stunt work in film and TV for nearly two decades; it should come as no surprise that his first feature film would showcase some excellent stunt work throughout.  Before Braven, I knew Jason Momoa had done work on Game of Thrones and had his bit as Aquaman in Justice League, but I had never gotten the chance to see him genuinely flex those acting muscles of his till now.  I’m not about to say Momoa delivers a tour-de-force performance here, but it’s nice to see that he’s attempting to show a little range while beating up on the bad guys in the process. One would think the pairing of Oeding and Momoa would equal a surefire action hit, but instead we get an action film that unfortunately lacks any substance beyond some of its unique kills.

Joe Braven (Momoa) is a logger but is also a family man who seems to go days at a time without seeing his wife or daughter, so their time together you’d think would be more precious.  Momoa does a good job at playing the loyal husband and loving dad, but the relationship that the film focuses on most is between Joe and his father, Linden (Stephen Lang) whose mental health is deteriorating. After Linden gets into a bar fight that has him leaving the hospital in stitches and a warning from the police that next time Linden will be serving some jail time, Joe decides it’s time to have some one-on-one time to decide what he needs to do about his father. The problem is, rather than use this as a springboard to move the plot along and give us a chance to see this father-and-son relationship play out, it’s clear the film only used this as a device to get the characters from point A to point B.

I’ve been a fan of The Walking Dead ever since the first episode aired on AMC. I’m a sucker for zombie films and the original Dawn of the Dead remains as one of my all-time favorite horror films. I mention this because when the idea came along to do a spin-off of The Walking Dead, I was stoked. But when Fear the Walking Dead first aired, I have to admit there was something about it that just didn’t hook me. So I gave up after a couple episodes. I wish I had held out just a little bit longer. Before jumping into season 3 of the show, I decided to revisit the series and start with a fresh set of eyes from the first season to catch up...and what a fun ride it has been!

For those that are unfamiliar with the show, Fear the Walking Dead starts in Los Angeles when the zombie outbreak has only just begun. If you are worried it’s nothing more than a West Coast version of the same story, let me set your mind at ease by saying, though it has similar themes and circumstances, Fear the Walking Dead is a darker and more intimate tale.

It has been about seven years since last we heard Tobin Bell ask if we wanted to play a game. From 2004 until 2010 we were treated to seven films in quick succession, with The Final Chapter apparently bringing the popular franchise to an end. But most of us were pretty sure that the end wasn't quite so near. The films brought in billions of dollars and even inspired a new escape room industry around the globe where people could work out puzzles and attempt to beat a ticking clock to get out of a themed room. Of course, no blood gets spilled, but folks pay for the experience, and a lot of that goes back to the Saw film franchise. With all of that money, Lionsgate simply couldn't let the franchise rest for long. But after moving so quickly from film to film, it was a good idea to allow it time to breathe and the producers a chance to recharge the old batteries. Break's over. The franchise gets a bit of a reboot without completely rebooting at all. The result is Jigsaw, and I suspect this is more of a beginning than merely Saw 8.

Jigsaw is the first film in the series to begin with something other than victims awakening to the newest trap. Police are chasing a suspect with a detonator in his hands. He's pleading to talk to a Detective Halloran (Rennie). As the cops descend upon the manic suspect, he warns that the game is about to start. It's what fans are waiting for, and we cut to five people with buckets bolted to their heads attached to chains. A wall of the obligatory saws awaits their hapless forward plunge, and a familiar voice explains their predicament. From this point there are pretty much two stories playing out for the remainder of the film.

You know how sports teams retire the jerseys of their most beloved, outstanding players so that no one can ever wear their number again? Well, we are well past the point where movies about exorcisms need to be hanging from Hollywood's rafters. Simply put, no one has ever come close to doing it as well as William Friedkin did almost 45(!) years ago with his adaptation of The Exorcist. If anything, The Crucifixion is an even more egregious misfire than other head-spinning stabs at the genre because this movie is actually based on an intriguing, horific real-life case.

In 2003 Open Water hit the screen; it was a success since at the time the found-footage genre hadn’t yet saturated the market.  I thought it was a fun little movie that was creative, and what impressed me most of all was the use of the sharks in the film.  The danger always felt real, and to a point it was a convincing film.  It was inevitable that a sequel would follow, though it came and went so fast, it’s not big surprise that many seem to have forgotten the film existed.  Now it’s nearly a decade since the sequel came out that we now have a third installment, Open Water 3: Cage Dive.

It’s unfortunate for this film that 47 Meters Down also happens to come out the same year. (You can check out my review of that film on the site as well).  With a bigger budget, polished cinematography, and a recognizable cast, it’s no wonder that 47 Meters Down was the one to score at the box office while Open Water 3 managed to sink with barely a whimper. This isn’t the first time films with similar plots have released at the same time, but most often the case there is one that stands out; this isn’t the film to do that.

When it comes to the overwhelming majority of zombie fiction, it’s all about brains (or rather, BRAAAINS!!!) It’s what the undead hunger for, and a well-placed headshot is usually the only way to kill them (again). And that doesn’t even cover the popular device of using the walking dead as an allegory for an increasingly mindless society. Warm Bodies stands out because it’s more concerned with an entirely different bodily organ. Based on Isaac Marion’s popular novel of the same name, the zombie romantic comedy deals directly with matters of the heart.

Then came the dark empire of Acheron, where cruel Necromancers sought 'Secrets Of Resurrection'. They crafted a mask from the bones of kings, and awakened its wrath with the pure blood of their daughters. The mask summoned spirits of unspeakable evil, giving them power that no mortal man should possess."

The character started as a pulp fiction serial by Robert E. Howard in the 1930's.  But Howard killed himself in 1936, and the character stood still for a time. There were several attempts to revive him, but it was likely Marvel Comics that gave Conan his greatest popularity in the 1970's. By 1982 the character was huge enough to justify a major feature film. That movie would start the movie career of a bodybuilder named Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnie would return to the character a couple of years later for Conan the Destroyer. The franchise was doing well, but a third film fell into development hell, and nothing much happened for a while. Rights would move around, and finally the property was rebooted in 2011 with Jason Momoa in the lead role. He appeared perfectly cast. He was a somewhat barbarous alien in Stargate: Atlantis and was a hit in HBO's Game of Thrones. Conan appeared to be a good fit for the action actor, and it was. Momoa is quite good in the part, helping return the character more to his Howard origins. But that's about all that went right with the reboot.
