After the horrific attempt at King Arthur, Guy Ritchie was dead to me. His films have always been more style than substance, but there have been moments when that style really told a story and told it well. Of course, I’m talking about films like Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. That was just a fun film to watch. King Arthur wasn’t fun to watch. So when The Gentlemen showed up on my doorstep in UHD to be reviewed, it was a roll of the dice for me. Which version of Ritchie was going to show up? Fortunately, it was the brilliant filmmaker who knows his strengths as well as the strengths of his cast and plays completely to those strengths. And with a few irritating flaws, this was the kind of film I’ve been waiting for from the director for several years. Universal has released it on a rather nice UHD Blu-ray (4K) release, and it should be a fun night of action for anyone who gets their hands on it.

Hustlers tells the “true” story of a team of strippers who found a way to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients and is based on a New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler. It promises a pretty good time. I mean, think about it. Wall Street is the stuff of mustache-twirling villains these days. Brokers might have dropped beneath ambulance-chasing lawyers and used car salesmen as the people we love to hate. Throw in some strippers and a clever con that happens to target these modern bad guys, and it sounds like the kind of romp that has something in it for everybody. Well … maybe not the Wall Street guys who go to the movies, you might say. Did I mention it’s got strippers? At first blush the film reminds me a little too much of Paul Verhoeven’s infamous Showgirls. The problem is that the schlock value of that film has allowed it to find its place in film history, and so it has survived in all its badness. Will the same be true of Hustlers? Or will it quickly vanish into a sea of obscurity before another couple of years are over? I have to say that I suspect it’s the latter. By this time next year, you’ll be asking a friend what the name of that stripper film with Jennifer Lopez was last year. Let me know if anyone remembers, won’t you?

The biggest complaint I hear about today’s movies is that there’s no originality at the box office anymore. While it’s true that most of the big earners are comic book heroes, sequels, reboots, monsters, or fantasy book franchises it’s simply not accurate at all to say there isn’t anything original happening in cinema anymore. If you are willing to take a chance on something different, you’ll find it everywhere, and while it might not dominate the media buzz, it’s there all the same, and your local multiplex likely dedicates at least a couple of screens to these kinds of films. Yesterday is certainly one of those little gems that go by not completely unnoticed but receiving far less buzz than it deserves. The fact is, there’s still room for all species of film. After pulling in a more than respectable $150 million at the box office, Yesterday is now out on home video, including this UHD Blu-ray release in 4K.

At first glance, Mary Queen of Scots has all the makings of a film you’d expect to be nominated for numerous awards; after all, it’s a period drama that showcases some remarkable performances from Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie.  Unfortunately this retelling of the story between Queen Elizabeth (Robbie) and Queen Mary (Ronan) is bogged down with its politics and the struggles these women have being leaders while their differing religions present a conflict preventing them from ever working together.  Let me just jump into this and attempt to sort this film out.

“That’s one small step for (a) man. One giant leap for mankind.”

July 20th, 1969. If you were alive and even somewhat old enough to be aware of your surroundings, you likely still remember that date. There are many such dates in history; unfortunately so many of them revolve around tragic events like 9-ll or the attack on Pearl Harbor. But on that night I was eight years old, and I know exactly where I was. I was watching Walter Cronkite on television as he brought us the first landing on the surface of the moon. Today that’s a bittersweet memory. For an 8-year-old boy it was a promise that has remained unfulfilled. If you had told that 8-year-old who just saw humans walking on the moon that 50 years later we would have gone no further, he would have been dumbfounded. If you told him that not only would we go no further but that we would stop going to the moon in just a few short years, he would have been devastated. I can only imagine what that first man on the moon thought about it all so many years later.

“The list is an absolute good. The list is life.”

It had been nearly 20 years since I had seen Schindler’s List. I believe this was only the second time I’ve watched it since seeing it in the theaters back in 1993. It’s one of those films that doesn’t lend itself to repeated viewings. It clocks in at over three hours, and the material is emotionally draining. That doesn’t mean the film shouldn’t be on everyone’s shelf. It should. It should, because it tells a brutal story that civilization must never forget. It’s clear that while the event remains in our collective memories, the reality of the Holocaust has been lost on too many people. Watch this film, and you will be completely amazed that anyone could throw words like Hitler or Nazi to describe anything that could be happening in American politics today. I’m convinced that the people who use those descriptions need to sit down for three hours and watch Schindler’s List, maybe for the first time. It belittles this horrific moment in history to throw it about as a political hit or hate speech.
