    The Expendables 2 (UHD Blu-ray) (4K)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 11th, 2017

    “I got this…”

When Sly Stallone delivered his homage to the 1980’s action film in The Expendables he hit a lot of the action film requisites. It was old-school fun with a new-school level of effects and production design. But with all of his efforts to bring back the 1980’s action star hero, there was one beat he couldn’t have connected with until a couple of years later. You see, action films are like potato chips. You can’t have just one. Films like First Blood, Die Hard, Terminator, and all of the others always had one final thing in common…the sequels. In case you thought that The Expendables was a one-off, the sequel was inevitable. And this is one case where the second film might be a little better than the first. Sure, it’s somewhat of a two-hour cliché, but who says there’s anything wrong with that?

    The Expendables (UHD Blu-ray) (4K)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on May 2nd, 2017

“Man, we’ll die with you. Just don’t ask us to do it twice.”

Remember the old days of the action movie? Those films where someone like Stallone or Schwarzenegger would run around and take out armies of bad guys while barely breaking a sweat. You know the kind of movie I’m talking about. The ones where the hero goes up against a hail of bullets and explosions and manages to pick off the bad guys without catching a single slug himself. These were the days when a guy like Bruce Willis could fall thirty floors, get a spike impaled in his ribcage, have a ton of concrete wall fall on his head, and get run over by a truck, but still manage to take out the bad guy while muttering some witty little catchphrase that we would all be repeating, because if we could deliver the line just right that meant we were tough guys too

    Expendables 3 (UHD Blu-ray) (4K)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on April 6th, 2016

    Welcome to the 21st century!”

Welcome to the world of 4K UHD Blu-ray. This is our first 4k review. It won’t be the last.

Sylvester Stallone has dedicated the better part of the last decade to giving moviegoers what they wanted 20 years ago. It started with 2006’s Rocky Balboa, which closed out Stallone’s signature franchise in the satisfying manner fans have been craving since 1990’s Rocky V debacle. We’ve also gotten another Rambo sequel, as well as long-awaited team ups with icons both real (Schwarzenegger in Escape Plan) and cinematic (Grudge Match was “Rocky vs. Raging Bull”). But Stallone’s biggest recent success is the veritable fantasy team of action stars he’s assembled for the Expendables films.

The Expendables (Extended Director’s Cut) (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on December 21st, 2011

“Man, we’ll die with you. Just don’t ask us to do it twice.”

Well… that’s exactly what Sylvester Stallone is asking you to do. Many will look at this release as a simple case of a double-dip, and to a certain extent it is. But Sly isn’t kidding when he tells us that it’s a better film this way. At least I thought so. No question the studio wants to build buzz going into the second film, and this edition works as a sort of placeholder. It’s still a tough decision, but let’s look at the film again, just for argument’s sake, shall we?

Tuesday Round Up: May 2, 2017

Posted in Tuesday Round Up by John Ceballos on May 2nd, 2017

This week’s Round Up stars a group of muscle-bound action movie all-stars like we’ve never seen them before! Lionsgate was kind enough to spare copies of The Expendables and The Expendables 2 in 4K, so be sure to check back soon for our reviews. And speaking of icons of yesteryear, Paramount has taken (dance) steps to ensure that John Travolta’s big screen breakout stays alive thanks to Saturday Night Fever: 40th Anniversary Director’s Cut. (Our longtime friend Michael Durr came out of retirement to review this one.) Time Life goes to war with Bob Hope Salutes the Troops, while Passion River Films gets in touch with its artistic side in Saving Banksy. Finally, CBS/Paramount rolls the dice with Vega$: The Complete Series, while Universal spotlights some four-legged friends with A Dog’s Purpose.

Now it’s time for your weekly reminder before signing off: if you’re shopping for anything on Amazon and you do it through one of our links, it’ll help keep the lights on here at UpcomingDiscs. See ya next week!

    Vigilante Diaries (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on July 7th, 2016

“That’s me, Mike Hanover, and I just killed a man in a taco shop bathroom. Hey, he started it. I been hiding near the border looking for The Vigilante…”

You’ve found him. Anchor Bay’s The Vigilante actually started life as a web series. The web episodes followed the exploits of The Vigilante, played by Paul Sloan and his sidekick The Kid, played by Kevin L. Walker. It was pretty much a hyper-superhero kind of series with ramped-up action on a limited budget. Now we have a feature film version that is quite the mixture of genre films. You get a little grindhouse mixed with some Leone Spaghetti Western with extra sauce

    War Pigs (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on December 10th, 2015

In a war, there’s really only two things that are gonna ruin your day…officers and orders.”

The concept of duty — particularly giving and following orders that will almost certainly result in death — is at the forefront of War Pigs, a straight-to-DVD actioner that doesn’t actually have that much action in it. For a movie with the likes of Dolph Lundgren and Chuck Lidell gracing its Blu-ray cover, scaling back on the butt-kicking seems like a death sentence. However, I was surprised to find the action sequences were actually the weak link in this limited but reasonably entertaining World War II yarn.

    Castle: Season 7

Posted in Disc Reviews by Gino Sassani on September 14th, 2015

“Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of Castle and Beckett. Their ongoing mission to explore strange new motives. To seek out new witnesses and new suspects for murder. To boldly go where…right over here.”

I know there are fans out there who take the show pretty seriously. The DVD’s aren’t the only way you can get into the show these days. Castle has become a world all on its own. You can now buy actual mystery books in the Heat series written by “Richard Castle”.

Upcomingdiscs Talks With Robert Davi From Awaken

Posted in Podcasts by Gino Sassani on June 30th, 2015

Robert Davi has been around for a long time. He was a Bond villain against Timothy Dalton’s Bond in License To Kill. He went toe to toe with Sly Stallone in The Expendables 3. He told off Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Most of you remember him as Agent Malone on The Profiler. So what does he do for an encore? He sings Sinatra songs, what else? I’ll tell you what else. He stars in Awaken the new film out from Arc Entertainment. I had a great time talking to the man recently. We talked about Italy and music. Of course, we talked about Awaken. The man’s a force to be reckoned with. Just ask Sly, Bond or Bruce. It was even his birthday. Bang it here to listen to my conversation with Robert Davi. You should also check out his music site Here.

    Sabotage (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on July 22nd, 2014

    – “Are you some kind of big deal?”

    – “Yeah, I’ve been around.”

The box office has not been kind to Arnold Schwarzenegger ever since he stopped being “The Governator” and started headlining movies again. Not counting his Expendable glorified cameos, Ahnuld’s three movies — The Last Stand, Escape Plan, and Sabotage — are among the lowest domestic grossers of his career. It’s clear that not a lot of people are seeing these movies, which is kind of a shame.

    Escape Plan (Blu-Ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by Jeremy Butler on February 7th, 2014

“A successful breakout depends on three things: Layout, Routine, and Outside Help.”

You know, there was a time when the public could only dream of an Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone team-up. Now thanks to a little film called The Expendables, when it comes to the realm of action star team-ups, anything is possible. Case in point: Escape Plan. When this film was first announced, I figure it would be devoid of any real substance and just another attempt to capitalize on the success of  Expendables

    Ambushed (Blu-ray)

Posted in Disc Reviews by John Ceballos on November 11th, 2013

The most surprising thing about Ambushed is that it’s not quite as generic as its completely uninspired title might suggest. (Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 15 movies that could credibly be re-titled Ambushed; I’m sure you can too.) This particular straight-to-DVD action thriller is being sold as The Expendables-lite, with tough guy supporting players (and Ambushed producers) Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture — along with Vinnie Jones, who really should’ve been in an Expendables movie by now — glowering from the Blu-ray cover. But this stylish L.A. drama — which liberally borrows from superior crime flicks — has a few tricks of its own.

Stallone Collector’s Set (Rambo: First Blood / Cop Land / Lock Up) (Blu-ray)

Posted in No Huddle Reviews by Gino Sassani on August 22nd, 2012

Sylvester Stallone has had his share of up and down films over the years. After suffering a bit of a career letdown in the 90’s, he started the new millennium by tacking on wonderful codas for two of his most iconic characters. Both Rocky and Rambo benefited from superior sequels that brought some class and closure to the franchises. He’s followed that feat with his love letter to action fans, The Expendables, and the second film in that franchise is hitting now. It’s really no surprise that Lionsgate wants to get in on some of that comet ride and they’ve done it with a Blu-ray package of three Stallone films.

    Warrior, The

Posted in Disc Reviews by Michael Durr on December 23rd, 2011

Most people know me to be a pretty big fight fan (with the exception of boxing which has gone tremendously downhill since the eighties). I love wrestling (even though it is scripted) and watch a great deal of Mixed martial arts, better known as MMA. The thrill of combat, the fascination of pure athleticism and talent is what straps me to my seat and never lets me go. I had the immense pleasure to catch the movie Warrior before it hit theaters and now I get to visit it a second time on DVD.

Friday and the end of the week brings us to the last of our Gift Guide editions for this week. Today’s studio is Lionsgate. Over the last year there have been plenty of solid titles from the roaring studio. I’ll bet you have at least one someone on your Christmas list who is into either action or horror. You better prepare an extra hearty man helping of holiday dinner when you put these titles under the tree, because someone’s going to get one heck of a workout.

“31 Days of Terror” Bioshock I – The Experience

Posted in 1 player, 2k Games, First Person Shooter, News and Opinions, Random Fun, Xbox 360 by Michael Durr on October 15th, 2010

Most people have figured out by reading my reviews, columns and other assorted passages of bloggery that I’m wired a little bit different. Most people wouldn’t have the guts (or foolishness) to write a gaming column for four years on a site that is dominated by movie reviews. Contrary to many other review writers, I am interested in the story rather than the technical specs. It’s no wonder that last year’s 31 days of Horror, I wrote a rather long review on The Thing without even touching any information about the dvd or blu-ray release.
