Happy 2016, everybody! We closed last year with a bang — and I’m not just talking about the fireworks above UpcomingDiscs headquarters on New Year’s Eve — and we’re hitting the ground running for our first Tuesday Round Up of 2016. HBO is on the case with True Detective: Season 2. Cinedigm is Full of Grace, plays a Kill Game, offers a horror twist with Little Dead Rotting Hood, and is en pointe with ballet drama Flesh and Bone. Shout! Factory cops to Hill Street Blues: The Final Season, and the studio’s Scream Factory chills us to the bone with The House Where Evil Dwells/Ghost Warrior double feature. Meanwhile, A&E examines more evidence of Ancient Aliens: Season 8.
You can already read our takes on Universal’s The Visit and Green Inferno, along with RLJ Entertainment’s Adulterers and XLrator’s Wrecker. RLJ is also playing fetch with Robo-Dog, while XLrator keeps us at Close Range. Magnolia enters the lab with Experimenter, Green Apple Entertainment shares Susie’s Hope, and Comedy Central gives us a tour of Broad City: Season 2. Finally, Lionsgate takes a trip to Mercury Plains and dives into the Battle for Skyark, while Paramount holds us Captive.

Well, partners, it’s time for the final Tuesday Round Up of 2015…and we've got plenty of fireworks before year's end! We’ll be setting our sights on Hitman: Agent 47, courtesy of Fox. Lionsgate pulls one last major Heist, and Image Entertainment cuts straight to the Bone Tomahawk. Finally, the end of the year also means it’s Showtime! Reviews for two of the cable channel's series are on the way: Warner Bros. is utterly Shameless: Season 5, while CBS/Paramount reacquaints us with Ray Donovan: Season 3.

And that's just a taste of the fun we're having around these parts, as we count down to Christmas. Lionsgate sharpens Dragon Blade, goes the distance with 12 Rounds 3, and looks up to The Giant King. Finally, Shout! Factory leave us in charge of The Nanny: Season 5.

Maybe someone on your shopping list loves movies and loves books. The best place I can offer you here is the folks at Barron's Educational. I've seen two books from them this shopping season that you really want to check out. The first we've already talked about. The second is for that Dr. Whovian on your Christmas list.
The first thing you need to know is that the book isn't laying the claim that these are the very best films ever made. It merely includes movies that for some reason or another demand to be experienced at least once in your life. Many are included because of the influence they have had on those that came after. And while these films might seem primitive by modern standards, we wouldn't have the modern standards without them. Others are included because of some groundbreaking milestone the film measures in the industry. Many are included because of how much they have invaded our pop culture. The movies span all genres, all nations, and all subjects. Each capsule gives us a short description of the film and a brief presentation of the reasons for its inclusion here. The capsules range from very short paragraphs to two-page spreads. There are 75 contributors, so the writing styles vary considerably. The book includes hundreds of wonderful stills from these films and is one of the more informative books I've encountered in the last decade.

The calendar says it’s December, but it sure doesn’t feel that way down here at the UpcomingDiscs ranch. While we patiently wait for it to get cold enough to get the fireplace going — or at least make us reach for a light jacket — we’ve got another week’s worth of hot releases to review. Lionsgate gives us Amy, which examines the (tragically short) life of singer Amy Winehouse and is one of the best-reviewed movies of the year. But that’s not all: Lionsgate also doubles down with Mississippi Grind, adheres to a Zero Tolerance policy, keeps watch with The Guardsman, settles down with Some Kind of Beautiful, and washes away Cooties. Meanwhile, Image Entertainment goes Where Children Play, and Cinedigm enlists War Pigs.
And since we had to find *some* way to get in the Christmas spirit around here...congratulations to November's Tuesday Round Up contest winner Sherry McKay, who won Jingle Bell Rocks on DVD.
